Solway Ghost

Rate this book
Spending Christmas with his family was not Dick's first choice, not even on the Solway Coast. But he discovered Drumghoul, a derelict cottage at Drummore and fell in love. A futile dream, Dick was penniless, but a chance find on the beach put him in a position to fulfill his dream. The dream became a nightmare. Drumghoull was haunted, horribly haunted. The family were together again in May, when the Solway Coast is at its best and Drumghoul was restored to its glory, but the idyll turned to horror. Are Dick's beautiful blonde nieces possessed? Can Dick resist temptation? Can the curse of drowning be escaped? 'Solway Ghost' is a gripping story by a master of the genre, which reveals s sinister side of the Solway Coast.

The back cover states that this is...A gripping story by a master of the genre" Really? I'd beg to differ. I found it rather a poor story & a bit muddled - just who was the ghost supposed to be? Hetty? Methebel? Or even Hetty's mother? Not clear to me at all (but don't have the inclination to flick back through it to find out!) It's a shame that the author chose such a ludicrous way of enabling Dick to finance the purchase of Drumghoul, I found it quite laughable really. I could give you a hundred guesses & I'll bet you'll never get it! Are you ready for this? .......he found a sandcastle on a beach...wait for it.... decorated with pearls from one of Mary Queen of Scots necklaces! Yes really! Told you you'd never get it... ;o)

The rest of the story was pretty unconvincing too with a pair of sixteen-year-old twins being particularly cringeworthy. It's a shame as the idea had potential but it just doesn't come off.

On the plus side....& the only reason it's getting 1.5 stars...is that it is set in area that I love & spend a lot of my time so I did enjoy the mentions of places I know so well such as Port Patrick & The Clansman in Port William (long gone now sadly).
