Two little mice live in Mrs. Garibaldi's house. Eeka lives behind the refrigerator, Esmeralda lives behind the cream pitcher in the China cupboard. Mrs. Garibaldi, to save her reputation, hires a giant mouser named Sam to get rid of Eeka. She thinks that Esmeralda is a cute little hamster and puts her in a fancy birdcage. Eeka must be very brave and clever to rescue his beloved Esmeralda. The most unusual thing about this story is that it's told by a squirrel named Merriwether who lives in the maple tree behind Mrs. garibaldi's house.

I read this when I was a kid and loved it! It's not quite as much fun as an adult, but I still think it's cute. I think that if they ever decide to reprint this they should get a new illustrator, (like Brian Floca) and add some more drawings of cute little mice.
