Danvedi Garwal is the highest peak in the Toribol system; a magnificent stratocone volcano rising high above the surface of the tiny Lochlon moon, Utha. The mountain remains unconquered after repeated attempts by climbers from dozens of worlds where alpine climbing is an interplanetary obsession. Now, Alois Anwar will finally get his chance to lead a group of the finest mountaineers alive to the top. But there is more to the challenge than reaching the summit. The Amanian ascent team faces political complications from a rival nemisis Trescan team advancing on the opposite side of the mountain, along with everything else the mountain throws at them including deadly parasites, period cyclones, ice worms, pagan myths, the hopelessness of failure and the greatest obstacle of all...themselves.
Fantastic science fiction about two extraterrestrial races in a heated battle to climb the highest summit in the galaxy. It's original, great characters. The description and detail will have you hanging on the edge of your seat. Highly original, enjoyable and exciting. One of the best sci-fi books I've read this year. Writing style very similar to Kim Stanley Robinson.
I received a free copy via Netgalley in exchange for a honest review.
Ok so the author likes climbing. It felt in places that he was trying to teach how to climb. Although the characters were interesting there is only so many different ways to climb. It was too long and I lost interest after 50%. DNF says it all really.
Absolutely loved this book. Being a sci-fi nut this really fitted me. The great narrative and characters made me romp through it. Anyone wanting an imaginative read, this is the one. Great stuff.
Forbidden Summit is the kind of book that would have activated my imagination as a child, and it's an action-packed read for adults. The book works like an action movie, cinematic, and very, very science fictional in nature. Recommended for readers looking for a good time.
