The Yuletide Angel

Rate this book
It's the 1890s in Meadowmead and someone is venturing out at night to leave packages at the homes of the needy. Dubbed "The Yuletide Angel," no one knows the identity of this mysterious benefactor.

No one, except Hugh Barnes, a confirmed bachelor who finds himself drawn to the outwardly shy but inwardly bold Violet Madison, a young woman who risks her safety to help others.

When Violet confesses her fear of eviction from her childhood home, Hugh longs to rescue her. His good intentions are thwarted, however, when Hugh's estranged brother shows up in town ... and in Violet's company.

But Violet faces an even bigger threat. A phantom figure lurks in the shadows, prepared to clip the wings of her Yuletide Angel.

I downloaded this novella for free from Amazon. It’s a historical romance set in the Victorian period. Violet is unmarried and without prospects, living with her brother and his soon to be wife. She wants to open a bakery, but her brother believes this would be improper. She sneaks around in the night, leaving gifts of food on people’s doorsteps, and convinces her next door neighbor, Hugh, who owns a grocery, to allow her to sell some pies and cakes in his store each day. Little does she know, Hugh is quite taken with her. This was a sweet love story with some good redemption themes.

I was given the challenge this year to read at least twenty-six books, each one's title beginning with a different letter of the alphabet. This one fit the bill for a book starting with the letter "Y". (Believe me when I say that there's a relatively small pool from which to choose.)

This historical holiday novella is sweet and a perfect read for the days leading up to Christmas. It stars Violet Madison, a timid young lady who has been cloistered away at home by her father for her own protection and safety. She is a woman of great compassion and secretly makes weekly evening forays to the homes of the poor in town, delivering much needed food. To the townsfolk, this angel of Christmas mercy is named, "The Yuletide Angel". No one knows who they are exactly. Her neighbor observes her nighttime mission and covertly follows to assure that no harm befalls her. Meanwhile, Violet's brother announces his soon to be be nuptials. Sadly, Violet's father had not made arrangements for her own marriage prior to his sudden passing. This causes Violet to reassess her life and resources, causing angst and concern about her own welfare and her desire to provide gifts for the poor. Will these be her final days as the secret bringer of hope?

Author Sandra Ardoin has done a lovely job telling a tale of a sound Christian woman doing all she can to alleviate suffering in her community, the worries and concerns of a woman of the late 1800s, and the prayers and desires of the heart. All this in a short and tidy book which is clean, sweet and leaves a glow in one's soul. Its reading is a sweet respite during the harried days leading up to Christmas.

Violet Madison and Hugh Barnes are neighbours but there is not much familiarity between them, even though both, unbeknown to each other, dream of getting to know each other better. This Christmas there are more important priorities, though. She wants to make her own personal dreams come true and he finds himself, against his will, protecting “The Yuletide Angel” from the dangers she puts herself in during her laudable -but ill-advised- night excursions!

Sweet story that tells the generosity of a young girl, shy but determined to help her neighbour and to get a certain independence even though it was something still unpopular for that time period. Violet Madison is a character I could find some similarities with and, maybe for that reason, I found this story very interesting and beautiful. When we can relate to the heroes and heroines of our books, the reading experience is always positive and, somehow, even those moments we are not involved in that much do not influence our final rating.

In this tale there is a lovely protagonist, a kind and gallant hero and some enemies that ultimately will not be so bad. The Christmas atmosphere invites the readers to dream and, though there is some moment of anxiety and apprehension, everything ends well. After all, there is always a happy ending for everybody at Christmas!

The narration flows fast and the writing is captivating. I did not know this author before but this Christmas story -sweet and touching- gave me the opportunity to get to another writer’s work whose Christian fiction books get me curious and I will definitely read in the future. I recommend “The Yuletide Angel” to those who love diving into the magical atmosphere of Christmas!

Although the cover looks spooky, there's nothing eery about The Yuletide Angel--but she DOES go about with her charitable work dressed in black and that house is a nice new one for the time period, which is 1890! Convicted that good works should be kept private, Violet goes to extremes!

Having lost her father, and previously her mother, Violet is left living with her brother who has now announced his engagement. This young lady, five years younger, will soon be moving into what has been their home. Sensing she will soon become unwanted in her own home, Violet (whose personality has been consistent with that of being a shy shrinking violet) sets out begin what she hopes will be a successful bakery business.

Meanwhile Hugh Barnes, a grocer whose home is across the street from Violet's has discovered who the town's mysterious Yuletide Angel is--and he's concerned for the young woman who does her merciful acts at night. Seeking to protect her, he follows her through the dark streets of their town.

Rejected by several other storekeepers, Violet approaches Hugh about placing her baked goods in his store. Their relationship grows and a sweet romance begins. But then an unwanted reminder of past hurts returns to affect them.

Enjoyed the story a lot this time around too. It was cute, easy to read, and well-written. The scene at the end where she had the run in with that guy seemed somewhat unbelievable, but it was still okay.

//

A very light, easy Christmas read. I liked the characters and story, but just thought the romance was so quick. Still the "Yuletide Angel" aspect was cute...especially how Hugh followed her around to protect her. ;)

Quite nice. A lovely entrance into my Christmas reading. The details and descriptions in this short read reminded me so much of the holidays and all it represents. The romance was not over-done but satisfying all the same. I enjoyed the baking aspect and the quaint store owner feel. All-in all a memorable read. I got this on kindle many months ago and chose it as my first holiday read for the season!!

It’s soon Christmas, and people of Meadowmead are unaware that their Yuletide Angel is Violet Madison. Without telling Violet, he keeps watch over the quiet, young woman who draws him in by her kindness.

It’s soon Christmas, and people of Meadowmead are unaware that their Yuletide Angel is Violet Madison. No one that is, until her neighbor, Hugh Barnes, happens to see her slip out into the evening to secretly leave packages for the needy. Without telling Violet, he keeps watch over the quiet, young woman who draws him in by her kindness.

Violet is attracted to the handsome grocer, but believes the confirmed bachelor would never be interested in her. Besides, now that her brother is marrying, Violet feels she must find a way to make a support herself. Only, it’s the 1890s, and it’s not common for women to run their own businesses. Violet’s predicament forces her to turn to Hugh for help. But with Christmas fast approaching, Violet and Hugh are faced with challenges that will either bring them closer together or tear them apart.

The Yuletide Angle is a sweet romance. Hugh and Violet seem to be a perfect match. Violet is a strong, independent woman—someone to emulate. Hugh is a handsome, successful, and humble man. While he could court any single woman in town, he chooses Violet —not only because he finds her beautiful, but because he sees and appreciates the kind of person she is inside.

Readers will be able to relate to these characters and the internal and external struggles they experience. Most of us want to be generous people, but how often do we examine our motives? Most of us desire to find purpose in our lives, but where do we find it? Just as Violet experiences a few road blocks in business, women today still battle assumptions because of their gender. The author did a wonderful job of weaving these situations into the story and leaving us with a satisfying ending.

If you’re looking for a story that will put you in the Christmas spirit, I highly recommend The Yuletide Angel

Sandra Ardoin's "The YuleTide Angel" is a wonderful Christmas read. The novella format is perfect for squeezing in reading time during the busy holiday season. Violet seems to be a reserved, timid young woman of the late 1800s. Underneath her shy exterior, Violet is very brave & generous. She is the mysterious Yuletide Angel, who gives Christmas baskets to the needy in less than desirable areas of the city. Violet is found out by a local shopkeeper, Hugh. He takes a second look at Violet and is intrigued by her sweet nature and desire for independence. This is a sweet love story of two people restricted, but not bound by the conventions of the time. There are Christian themes of forgiveness, grace & mercy which work very within the story. Highly recommend this story and would read more by this author.

What do I look for in a Christmas read? I look for a book that will help me relax in the midst of the rush and stress. I look for a book with that Christmas touch. One with characters you can relate to; characters you can root for. The Yuletide Angel had all these things and more. Along with the warm story came the lessons on humility, giving, and forgiveness. With a touch of mystery and a sweet romance, The Yuletide Angel makes it to my Christmas shelf to be enjoyed again in the years to come.

Heartwarming historical novella about a woman who is on a mission of mercy and a storekeeper who comes to her aid.
Violet feels inadequate and a burden when her brother marries and seeks to support herself. Can she find her place as a single woman in her small town?
I would like to see this story expanded with a bit more background on the characters.
Nice, quick, enjoyable read.

Yuletide Angel, Sandra Ardoin's debut book, is a sweet historical romance about a young lady determined to help others, in spite of her limited resources as a woman in the late 1800's. If you enjoy Grace Livingston Hill's novels or historical romances, I think you'll enjoy this read.

Violet Madison lives a secret life, one that could ruin the greatest treasure a woman in the late 1800's could have: her reputation. But instead of worry about herself, she worried about families in her neighborhood. And so she created the Yuletide Angel, leaving necessities on the doorsteps of those in need.

Merchant Hugh Barnes becomes the Yuletide Angel's personal guardian angel after watching her deliver her goodies one night. Each night he watches over her from afar and finds himself falling for her as he follows her.

I love the character arcs of both Violet and Hugh. And the pacing is just right with enough conflict to keep my interest going (but not too much to make me give up on them). I think this is a wonderful little story and I'd like to thank the author for an advance copy in exchange for my fair and impartial review.

I enjoyed this short story (104 pages). I try to read several Christmas themed stories/novels during this time of year and this one sounded interesting. Since I've never read the author and it was a "freebie" I wasn't sure what to expect. The storyline - an "angel" leaving food for the less fortunate was not unique in itself. What did make it unique was the fact that this "angel" was an unmarried woman who delivered these gifts at night while unescorted. This was definitely not done at that time. The characters were enjoyable, the way that the identity of this mysterious person was revealed was unexpected and quite believable. I've never read this author before, but having read this I'm sure that I'd enjoy any book she wrote.

12/1890, Meadowmead. Hugh Barnes (bachelor, grocer merchant) watched from the H. C. Barnes’ Grocery store as Ms. Violet Madison (27, Hugh’s neighbor, spinster, Yuletide Angel, aka Shrinking Violet) was delivering Christmas presents to those in need.

The town folks had no idea who she really was.
The Gazette had an article about The Yuletide Angel’s latest deliveries.
Surprise, surprise who should return to Meadowmead Christopher “Kit” Barnes (Hugh’s brother, Pittsburgh, PA.).
It just so happened he met Violet.
Charles (Violet’s brother, banker) & Lila Blackstone (fiancé) were getting married.

What did Wendell Collinsworth, & Mitch Collinsworth want to talk with Hugh & Kit about?

I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review. Only an honest one.

A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written Christmas romance book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great Christmas romance movie, or better yet a mini TV series. To be continued? A very easy rating of 5 stars.

This novella definitely reminded me of the old-fashioned writing of Grace Livingston Hill. A shy, benevolent heroine, a handsome, caring hero blend together to make an easy to read Christmas romance. I especially liked how Violet realized how her benevolence was not necessarily under the guise that she thought it was and perhaps for the wrong reasons. It was also nice to see how she grew in strength and confidence through her baking business. Hugh was so sweet as her protective hidden guardian, and I felt sorry for him when things went awry. Sweet and charming, a nice curl up with a cup of hot chocolate during the holidays read.

What a fun premise! A Good Samaritan makes weekly deliveries during the weeks leading up to Christmas, delivering precious supplies to the needy in the community, and the next door neighbor who secretly loves her catches her in the act.

Violet Madison considers herself plain and socially inept, but this small act of kindness emboldens her. Hugh Barnes sees beauty and a kind heart in Violet, and he determines to protect her during her clandestine missions. It was neat to see how Violet and Hugh grew over the course of the story, Violet morphing from shy and quiet to bold and empowered and Hugh dealing with past hurts inflicted by his brother.
"...what is it you want?"
Kit settled into the nearest chair, crossed his legs, and propped his hat on his knee. After a moment of silence, he said, "Forgiveness.""
We discussed this situation five years ago. You're forgiven." Even as he spoke, Hugh recognized the statement as a lie. Forgiving his brother meant a renewal of their relationship.

Haven't we all experienced a toxic family member, someone who hurts us repeatedly with their vicious zingers whether with words or deeds? This hit home for me, so I was glad to see that Kit had truly changed. Even so, I appreciated that their relationship wasn't restored immediately and that it took Hugh a little while to come to grips with his brother's new behavior.

The Yuletide Angel was a quick read with a clever plot and spiritual depth that kept me turning pages. For my taste, I would have liked more romantic interludes (read kissing) between Hugh and Violet, but I understand that society in the late 1800's didn't permit much of that. :) Overall, The Yuletide Angel was a pleasant way to spend a couple hours, and a great read for all seasons.

Disclaimer: Sending a big thank you to Lighthouse Publishing of the Carolinas and the author for allowing me the privilege of reviewing The Yuletide Angel and for the free copy I received in exchange for my fair and unbiased review. This opinion is my own, and I received no compensation.

The Yuletide Angel by Sandra Ardoin is a delightful novella. It is set in December 1890, and is about the legend of the Yuletide Angel who delivers sacks of food to the poor, under cover of darkness, in the weeks leading up to Christmas. It is always the talking point of the town, as the good deeds are reported, but who is it? No one knows. No one except Violet, who takes the words of Jesus to heart, not letting the right hand know what the left hand is doing. It is she, who is the Yuletide Angel. And her neighbour and store owner Hugh knows the identity, as he follows Violet to keep her safe.
Violet and Charles live in the family home, following the death of their father eight months previously. When Charles announces that he and Lila are to marry just before Christmas, Violet knows she must do something to become independent. Violet has dreams of opening a bakery, and is overjoyed when Hugh agrees to let her sell cakes and pastries in his store.
The Yuletide Angel has the theme of second chances and new beginnings running throughout. It spreads a message of hope, as it tells the tale of one woman's good deeds. And it emphasises the need to dispense forgiveness. It is a sweet little story but has a powerful Christian message. The Yuletide Angel can be read in the lead up to Christmas, but it has an all year round message - live as Christ urges us to live - doing good where ever we can, protecting the widows and orphans, and giving forgiveness when needed.

The Yuletide Angel is the perfect read to jump-start your Christmas spirit. I love the thought of a Victorian Christmas, and with this book being set in the 1890s it fits the bill. The historical detail and characters seemed true to the period and richly painted. The heroine, Violet, has been sheltered and protected all her life, as any respectable young woman would have been. And Violet is a quiet, godly woman; in fact, most people think her overly timid. And yet, there’s a streak of daring and independence in her. During Christmas season, she sneaks out of her house at night to distribute food and charity anonymously to the needy about town. And with the death of her parents and the imminent marriage of her brother, Violet is faced with a level of dependency she just can’t stomach. So she decides to try to gain some measure of financial freedom by selling baked goods—an activity that seems perfectly tame to us today but draws such opposition from most of the town (including her brother) that we’re reminded just how shocking it was for a woman to strike out into business on her own. Now enter the hero, Hugh, the only one who helps Violet get her business started, and the only one who really understands her strength and worth. But this being a romance, of course there are misunderstandings, working at cross-purposes, and obstacles in the path of true love. If you need a Christmas treat as sweet as one of Violet’s apple tarts, do check out The Yuletide Angel.

Book Review: The Yuletide Angel Sandra Ardoin, Author

There is nothing better to put you in the holiday spirit than to read a book that takes place during the Christmas season. But you don’t have to wait until December to read a wonderful holiday novella.

The Yuletide Angel written by Sandra Ardoin, is a delightful story set during December, 1890. You will adore shy, timid Violet, and you will champion her because by the end of the story, she finds her true voice and becomes a woman of strength and dignity. And you will fall in love with Hugh who owns the grocery store in town, but all he wants to own is Violet’s heart.

This book is only 108 pages and I read it in just under two hours. But packed in those 108 pages is such encouragement, selflessness, giving spirits and loving hearts, that you will feel wonderful long after you finish reading The Yuletide Angel. And you will understand that this story—and the season–is all about giving to those in need.

The Yuletide Angel hits the bookstores in just a few days – October 15. I would encourage you to pre-order a copy because this book will not stay on the shelves very long. You can also get the book online or from the publisher at http://heritagebeaconfiction.com. And if you’d like to get to know Sandra better and find out more about this book, visit her website at http://sandraardoin.com.

This sweet novella is set in snowy small-town America1890. I enjoyed the story line so much that I read it quickly in one setting. The heroine of this book Violet is 27 years old, lives with her brother Charles in the family home and is well on the way to being classified a spinster. Violet, however, holds a secret of being the Yuletide Angel, who delivers flour sacks of food to needy neighbors during the night. Her secret is known by at least one bachelor neighbor Hugh the local grocer. Also, she has dreams of more than being a spinster. Enough about the plot ... I do like the way the author weaves the culture of that time as well as the expected roles of women and men together. Quite different from today! So reading this book was quite a delight, refreshing, romantic, inspirational and a wonderful pick-me-up! Thank you Lighthouse Publishing of the Carolina's for providing me an advance copy of this book in PDF form to read and review.

In the winter of 1890 a yuletide angel is leaving gifts of food to the less fortunate in the fictional town of Meadowmead, Pennsylvania. Hugh Barnes, a local grocer, discovers the identity of the angel one sleepless night.
Violet is a 27 year old spinster living with her newly engaged brother. Violet worries about her future once her future sister-in-law becomes the lady of the house.
This is the story of two people with secrets and dreams of the future. I enjoyed the novella very much. I was disappointed when it ended much too soon. I recommend it to those who love romance and holiday books.

"The Yuletide Angel" is a quick read, but oh so sweet. I love Violet's humble heart, her quick recognition of pride in her life (Oh to quickly recognize it in my own life when it arises!!), her sweet compassion for the poor, her quiet love for her neighbor!

Hugh... oh! What a hero! Also quiet in his love for his neighbor, yet his desire to protect, to do right by the woman he admires and loves, is so precious and endears him to me quickly.

A great read to put me in the mindset of Christmas... that it's not all about me, but oh so much more about giving with the heart attitude of Christ! Beautiful story! I highly recommend!

In The Yuletide Angel by Sandra Ardoin, someone mysteriously leaves gifts at the homes of the needy during Christmas season nights in the 1890s. The town dubs the mysterious visitor the Yuletide Angel.

No one knows that the Yuletide Angel is shy, timid Violet Madison.

No one except her neighbor, Hugh Barnes. Hugh had seen Violet on her mission one night, and ever since he has followed her at a discreet distance to protect her.

When Violet learns her brother is planning to marry soon, she begins to worry. Her brother inherited the family home and plans to bring his bride there. They plan for Violet to live with them, but she would feel like she’s intruding on their lives. Her father did not leave her much because he assumed she would marry. But she is plain and not well-spoken, and no one has shown an interest. What could she do to make her own way that would be socially acceptable? She has some ideas of things she could sell in the Hugh the grocer’s shop.

Hugh has been fond of Violet for a long time. He speaks cheerfully to her and tries to gently draw her out. He enthusiastically endorses her plan for selling her baked goods in his store.

Just when it seems their relationship is unfolding well, Hugh’s ne’er-do-well brother, Kit, shows up. When Hugh sees Violet and Kit together, he feels betrayed.

And on top of everything else, an unseen stalker is following Violet on her nightly rounds and stealing her gifts.

This was an enjoyable story. I appreciate that as a Christian author, Sandra is not afraid to deal with Christian issues outright rather than just hinting at them. Yet her style is not heavy or preachy.

As a novella, this was a quick read. But the characters and story arc were well-developed. All in all, a good quick read.

Violet thinks her identity is a safe secret as she begins a Christmastime routine of sneaking about by night: an anonymous "angel" dropping off packages for townsfolk in need. But her neighbor Hugh knows, and he sets out each night to keep an eye on her, even as there may be someone else looking to disrupt Violet's missions of mercy in The Yuletide Angel by author Sandra Ardoin.

I've had this book for almost four years, hesitating to read it. The images on the book cover have a dark, creepy, "Ghost of Winter" kind of vibe, and the only ghostliness I can really do for the holidays is reading A Christmas Carol by Dickens and watching the 1951 film Scrooge.

So it was a pleasure to find out this historical romance is neither dark nor creepy, and the white figure cloaked in black isn't a phantom or anything. Phew! This is instead a lovely tale with a hint of danger woven in and some personal, practical lessons the two main characters must learn along the way.

Now, I can't say I was completely on board with the development of the forgiveness theme, as I don't believe truly forgiving someone necessarily means you must reenter a relationship with them, nor do I think whether or not a person repents to God should determine whether or not you let go of your bitterness toward them. Also, I think some late parts of the story border on being rushed or oversweet.

Nevertheless, plenty of ChristFic romance fans should enjoy this Yuletide read.

The Yuletide Angel: A mysterious benefactor ... a secret guardian ... and a love sweeter than grace. by [Ardoin, Sandra]This book is set in the 1890s at Christmas. Violet Madison has an uncertain future. Her home has been inherited by her brother and he is to be married soon. Violet assumes that this means she will not be welcome there when children come. In addition to this, she has been given the title of the Yuletide Angel, a mysterious person who leaves items at the homes of the needy at night. The only one who knows of her nighttime excursions is Hugh Barnes. He worries for her as she goes out to aid others.

Finally, Violet tells Hugh about her uncertain future, who helps by allowing her to sell her goods in his store. When Hugh's brother shows up and show an interest in Violet, he becomes worried. In addition, there is someone that is stalking Violet at night, she fears they will try to stop her good works.

I could rave about this book for a long time. I loved the setting, the time and the characters. The story's pace was good and kept me wanting to pick it back up to read more. I highly recommend this book.
