Beverly Lewis, raised in Pennsylvania Amish country and both a schoolteacher and an accomplished musician, has been an award-winning author for over a dozen years. Her acclaimed novel, The Preacher's Daughter, was a 2006 Quill Book Award finalist in the romance category. Her books have appeared on numerous bestseller lists, including USA Today and The New York Times. She and her husband, David, live in Colorado."
I've read plenty of Beverly Lewis books (almost all of them), so I am used to the way she writes, but somehow she still manages to blow me away with each new book, even though this one isn't new at all, its new to me. She writes about real people, with real problems and gives real solutions and makes you care about the characters, even if you don't like them sometimes. The young love between Levi and Merry is so refreshing and so pure, its enough to make you believe in "old-fashioned" love. Can't wait to continue and not going to wait any longer :)
There is a different kind of drama in this story than in the previous books. This one is heavy on the romance. It also is about friendship. Some of the drama could have been avoided if the main character had told her friend the truth. It takes an interesting turn, though, and I liked the ending.
This book was so sweet to read. Poor Mary enters and travels through her freshman year of high school. She also learns about her family’s history and how they were once Amish. I can’t wait to read more in the series.
Series: Summerhill Secrets #3 (Should be read in order)
Age recommendation: 13/14+
Summary: Merry’s friend Lissa and Jon start going out, so Merry decides to make Jon jealous by agreeing to date her Amish friend, Levi Zook. Her friends are all confused by her actions, and try to dissuade her from hanging out with Levi.
My thoughts: There’s a love triangle again! Seriously? It’s just so annoying. Merry is making it clear she loves Jon, yet when he doesn’t return her affection, she toys with the idea of being Levi’s girl (more because she can than because she loves him) and maybe it will wake up Jon. Ultimately, she thinks of Levi as more of a brother.
I am also annoyed at her friends for not wanting her to date an Amish boy. I get why it would annoy Rachel, because she thinks Merry is tearing her family apart (by making Levi want to leave the Amish), but why are her other friends so anti-Amish? I mean, I wouldn’t be Amish, but why do they think that she has lost all rational thought?
I do like that Merry gets to learn about her family history – I found it interesting to hear more background about her. I am sorry that that project and the thing with Levi kinda causes a rift between Merry and Rachel though. It’s sad.
Merry is not ashamed/afraid to share her faith with her unsaved friends, and I wish I could just transplant that into me. I am not good with sharing Jesus with people I know, but I wish I could and I really admire people who can. Merry just keeps sharing the gospel even though Chelsea doesn’t want to listen to her. She’s hard to discourage.
This book is about a girl who is struggling to get along with her friend and trying to find who she is along the way. She was mad when she found out that Lisa picked Jon as a partner for the history project, so she decided to be with her other friend Chelsea. Their history project was about their family history and they had to each do a separate project. They got started right away and Chelsea got a lot further on the project than Merry did at first. Merry started asking questions about her family history and she found out her aunt was soon to expect twins. She was scared because she didn’t want it to be girls because her twin sister died and she would be sad. Later, the babies were born and they were a girl and a boy. As she was researching her family history, she found out that there was a guy who was named Levi that left the Amish, and that is why they are not Amish, but that is how she is related to the Zooks because that is part of their family history too. The Zooks are Merry’s neighbor who she played with when she was little and she has learned a lot more about the Amish. Levi Zook, who is Merry’s neighbor, likes Merry and took Merry on a buggy ride and they watched stars, and then he asked her out. She didn’t know what to say and said she would think about it. She told her parents, and they were astonished and didn’t know what to think. Merry had a lot on her plate to think about and thought for a long time. Later, Merry presented her project with Chelsea and they did fine on it. Merry went to the Zook’s house to go give Levi his answer. What would her answer be?
