#2 in the Once Upon short-story series about magical star-related romances
Ever After by Nora Roberts - 4 stars This was sweet and warm. Allena is a good main character. She's a misfit in her family and misunderstood. But she's warm and sweet and follows her heart. When she's compelled to buy a star necklace even when she can't really afford it, she's somehow (magically) brought to an island off the coast of Ireland and meets a man she knows is hers. But he resists. I loved that he recognized her value as a warm woman who can make a house a home despite not having any other "professional" talents. They fit well together and were willing to give and make a stronger couple rather than two lonely singles.
Catch a Falling Star by Jill Gregory - 4 stars I liked the characters here. Princess Lianna has been betrothed to Ambrose the Barbarian, and she's already making plans for her cousin to come rescue her and defeat him. But, of course, she falls in love with Ambrose and must now work hard to set things right and save him with no further bloodshed. Sweet.
The Curse of Castle Clough by Ruth Ryan Langan - 4 stars Estelle is an estate reviewer, at a Scottish castle to evaluate the treasures in anticipation of a quick sale. Unfortunately, this is necessary because of a greedy relative who is planning to take over everything. But, with the help of the family retainers, a child ghost, and a long-ago curse, love finds a way to succeed. Nice, sweet, with just enough ghostliness to make it fun.
Starry, Starry Night by Marianne Willman - 4 stars When a lonely woman visits Scotland for a break from her hectic job and to reevaluate her job choices, she is rescued from being swept out to sea in a storm. Turns out, though, that the man died 100 years ago, with a curse and some mystery left behind. She knows he's real, though, and searches him out again and again. They discover a passion for each other and find a way to be together. This story had much more obvious magic involved, with a bit of time travel as well. Fun and interesting, with great characters.
Ever After 2 This was silly. The h was so silly and flaky, it kinda threw me how she could be such a lovely little homemaker too. I just didn't buy their love.
Catch A Falling Star 5 This story was so lovely, written like a fairy tale. A marriage of convenience between a barbarian and a gently-raised princess, their conflict was complex and believable, and her fighting attraction to her husband was wonderful! One of the standout stories in the collection.
The Curse of Castle Clough 4 I loved this! It was a fantastic start to what turned out to be a pretty good story. I didn't even mind the deus ex machina of Jaime, needed to move the story forward and resolve the issues. Some bits were a bit trite, and the conclusion perhaps a bit too easily resolved, but meh - I still loved it!
Starry, Starry Night 4 Well, that escalated quickly! :O A chance (or should that be fated?) encounter between a woman from the future, and a man from the past, are quickly attracted to one another, then in love. Everything seemed to happen a tad too suddenly, but the mystery was really well thought-out, and the resolution was satisfying. :)
I have been enjoying this whole series - 4 short novellas in each book - all with a common theme or thread throughout. Makes you think about the magic in life - the real magic, tht is. The magic in belieing in yourself and others. This series is a classic example of good winning over evil, and that if you have enough faith, anything is possible.
Allena has always been a screw up in the eyes of her family. When she gets distracted by a pendant in the shop window and misses the ferry she finds herself on the verge of losing another job. When she meets a boy that says he can get her where she needs to go she jumps at the chance. But, she's not lead to the missing ferry and her waiting sister. Instead she's taken to an island and left stranded with Conal, an reclusive artist. Conal is back on the island of his birth just in time to meet his destiny in Allena but will he open his heart and believe that she was meant to be here and is the woman of his dreams?
This one was very good and it included 4 shorter stories. First was "Ever After" which is about a girl from our time period that goes back in time and the magic of love is found. Next is "Catch a Falling Star" involves a girl given to a barbarian as his wife. Includes spells and love. "The Curse of Castle Clough" is about a man who is about to lose his home Castle Clough. To prevent it he has a professor come to put some of its contents up for auction. Oh by the way there is a ghost too. "Starry, Starry Night" is about a girl from our time that is drawn to a man from another time period.
These were four interesting stories full of magic and love.
My favourites were definetly "Catch a Falling Star" by Jill Gregory and "The Curse of Castle Clought" by Ruth Ryan Langan (I really loved Jamie's story).
However in the story written by Ruth Langan the connection to the theme "stars" was very tenuous.
I recommend this reading especially for those who are in need of a happy ending story to brighten their day.
Ever After - Nora Roberts - 3/5 - All the men in Conal's family are destined for a certain woman who shows up wearing a star pendant. And so Conal is hiding on his island before the deadline in which he has to claim her, hoping to avoid destiny, so that he can make his own choice. So when Allena shows up on his island wearing the star pendant, he'll have to make a choice...meet his destiny or not. This was an okay story. It kind of irritated me that when it came down to it, Conal really didn't have a choice and I can totally understand why he was so upset. In addition, Allena sort of irritated me because she shows up and instantly becomes his maid and handyman. And it seems that is all she really wants to do with her life...clean his house and fix things for him.
Catch a Falling Star - Jill Gregory - 2/5 - To save her father and his kingdom, Princess Lianna is forced to marry the Barbarian Ambrose. I don't care how nice he turned out to be - he was an absolute ass for the first half of the story. He was arrogant, showed no compassion and took great pleasure in laughing at her and humiliating her. I cannot stand the heroes that will smugly taunt a woman about their wedding night and about the power he holds over the heroine. The consummation was even more uncomfortable because she was clearly terrified and unwilling...but then, all of a sudden as he's kissing her she all of a sudden forgives him all and wants him desperately. ::facepalm:: This meets the definition of forceful seduction. And love simply follows such a wonderful wedding night... This story belongs in the 80's.
The Curse of Castle Clough - Ruth Ryan Langan - 3/5 - Rob is about to lose his estate, so in order to make some money he brings in Estelle to appraise his antiques. While staying at the estate with Rob and his father and appraising antiques, a ghost makes himself known and holds the key to keeping the estate. Through all of this Estelle and Rob are falling in love. This is an average story. Rob and Estelle barely have any time together before they're head over heels...and their chemistry wasn't that great. Jamie, the ghost, though was adorable!
Starry, Starry Night - Marianne Willman - 4/5 - This is a very unique take on time-travel romance and I liked it! Lily is vacationing in Cornwall and is rescued by Rees Tregarrick a Captain living in the 1700s or so. And so Lily finds herself in an odd time-travel like romance in which she continually finds herself being wrenched from her own time and into Rees's only to be sent back again. And she has no control over it. And in the midst of this they fall in love. Meanwhile, her journeys to Rees's time are really spaced out, so for Lily this maybe all happens in the space of a few days, for Rees years go by between her visits. So it's pretty sad that he has to wait for her. This is a pretty unique story, but the seamlessness of her time transitions makes it very hard to follow where and when she is and how she got there. Somewhat confusing. Nevertheless a great story!

This was a collection of four short stories/novellas that each have a theme of stars incorporated some way or another. I will review each separately.
Nora Roberts, Ever After: This book had a nice setting. It was a cottage by the sea I definitely wanted to visit. I thought the heroine was painted a bit pathetic though. I understood that the goal was to show that she found her place in the world with the hero, but I ended up just feeling sorry for her which I don't like in romance stories. I felt like sex came too easily in this story and the hero, who was resisting the entire story suddenly capitulated which was odd to me also. Overall, Roberts has a unique, descriptive voice for storytelling, but this didn't really do it for me. 3 stars.
Jill Gregory, To Catch a Falling Star: This was by far my favorite. I like the stories where there are prejudices that the characters get past in the story. This story about a princess and a warrior was a nice escape. 4 stars.
Ruth Ryan Langan, The Curse of Castle Clough: DNF
Marianne Willman, Starry, Starry Night: This story was an interesting concept but it was not executed well. To be honest, I still don't understand the time travel thing. I also felt that these characters fell in lust (this was a short story with two sex scenes) with each other instead of in love. And while I liked the scenes with Dr. Landry, I still don't understand why he got a note and no one else ( you will know what I mean). Too many loose ends in this one. 2 stars.
This is an anthology of paranormal romance, with sex. Stars are the theme. The 2nd book & apparently there are quite a few others. Copyright 1999.
Nora Roberts - 4 stars. Not a lot of excitement in this story, but I really liked it. Contemporary paranormal about an American working for her sisters tour agency. This is her last shot before the whole family washes their successful hands of her. She's given a star pendant in an antique shop & her life takes a turn for the better.
Jill Gregory - 3 stars. This story isn't as overblown & angsty as the one in the previous book, so & liked it a lot better. The Princess, Lianna is a brat. Ambrose is suitably hunky as the bastard duke who weds her (& tames her in a very quick amount of time). The end is very contrived, but this IS a short story, so what are you going to do?
Ruth Ryan Langan - 4 stars. Another contemporary paranormal. This one is a Scottish castle with a ghost. The star is a huge diamond, called the Scottish Star. It must be found if our hero is to save his castle. I liked this one. It's always a bonus when the heroine isn't an idiot.
Marianne Willman - 4 stars. A surprisingly good contemporary paranormal. I can't give too much away without spoiling. Just enjoy!
As I mentioned, there are other books with the "Once Upon" theme. These 2 are the only ones I've read though.
I've been working my way through the "Once Upon a..." anthologies--which I read in paperback once upon a time. ; ) Of the ones I've read so far (Also read Once Upon a Castle, Once Upon a Dream), I thought this was the overall best of them.
I loved Catch a Falling Star by Jill Gregory--but the others were close.
The one caveat and what cut the rating down to a four star review is the title and theme of "stars" was a stretch. In the one story, the only real link to stars was the main character's name Estelle. The stories were good. The writing excellent--which you'd expect from these "stars." (See... I can do it too.) I just thought it was silly to try and throw them together in a themed anthology with such a shaky connection.
The stories did not have a perfect balance among them. Nora's was disappointing, Jill's was touching and sweet, Ruth's was also really good and Marianne's was pure trash. Its an Okayish type of a book to read even despite Jill and Ruth Langan's stories.
