The Heir Apparent

Rate this book

Her secret is unraveling. One dangerous quest could end it all...

Rie thought she was an ordinary human. After she’s named heir to Sanyaro, the truthseeker and mediator of the nine faerie realms, life becomes a lot more complicated. As she struggles to control her magics, Rie nearly falls prey to a brutal assassination attempt during a public ceremony.

Blamed for the chaos, Rie’s escort, Prince Daenor, is taken prisoner. While Sanyaro tempers the political flames, Rie must once again chase after the truth. As if the threat of another great war and the impending death of her lover weren’t enough, Rie uncovers a dark secret that threatens to crack the very foundations of the faerie realms. When allies fall, can Rie overcome the odds… and the opposition?

Sanyare: The Heir Apparent is a captivating dark fantasy adventure novel. If you enjoy thrilling adventures across nine unique realms filled with wise-cracking carnivorous pixies, then you’ll love the second installment of The Sanyare Chronicles from Megan Haskell.

Legend has it, I was born with a book in my hands. When I was a kid, my mom would ground me from reading in order to get me to do my chores. To this day, I can readily ignore the real world in favor of the imaginary one lurking between the pages of my current addiction. My dad — also an avid reader — introduced me to Tolkien in my late elementary years, and I never looked back. I love escaping to worlds where magic and monsters are real, especially stories with kick-butt heroines and dangerously attractive heroes.

Despite my voracious book appetite, I didn’t start creative writing until I was working as a number cruncher in a big accounting firm. With an hour plus commute by train every day, and a demanding left-brain occupation, I needed a mobile creative outlet. A pen and paper are about as mobile as it gets! As the pages began to fill, I quickly moved onto a tiny laptop, and a writer was born. Now I get to create my own fantasies!

I currently live in Southern California with my wonderfully supportive husband, two daughters, and a ridiculously energetic dog.

Having given the first book (and its prequel) a try last year and thoroughly liking it, it didn't take much convincing on the author's part for me to jump right in to reading the sequel. And even though it had been awhile since reading the first book, I was able to quickly immerse myself back into Rie's world and easily fall into the story.

It was nice to see Rie learning more about who she is and her abilities. And while things weren't always easy for her, she slowly but shirley started to come into her own and become stronger in both confidence and in her abilities and relationships with those around her.

The pixies were still very much present which I was glad for because they still remain my very favorite part of this series and it just wouldn't of been the same without them.

With lies, deceptions, and mayhem always on the horizon, I can see many fans of the genre quickly liking and devouring this.

The story continues; just as good as the first book. Characters and story line(s) continue to grow -- you can tell it is a trilogy :)

Introduction

The “Sanyare Chronicles”, authored by Megan Haskell, is an ongoing fantasy series. This review will focus on the four books written so far. These are – ‘Pixie Tamer’ (a novella prequel), ‘The Last Descendant’, ‘The Heir Apparent’ and ‘The Last Apprentice’. The ‘Sanyare Chroncles’ is the story of ‘Rie’, a human, who grows up with the fae. Rie, a changling, grows up with the High Elves where she has to struggle to be respected and recognized. The books chronicle her adventures from the time she is a young adult.

Recommendation

I went into this series without knowing anything about it or the author. The high ratings on Goodreads encouraged me to start reading ‘Pixie Tamer’ which turned out to be quite good. The rest of the books follow this trend. While I would not rate this series as excellent, it is a cut above the rest of the usual young adult fantasy fare. The ‘Sanyare Chronicles’ is definitely worth a read. I would put it on par with other series like ‘October Daye’ or ‘Mercy Thompson’ (while not being as annoying).

Sanyare: The Heir Apparent is the second book in the Sanyare Chronicles, and follows Rie as she tries to control her magic, and realises that her position of Sanyaro Heir is very different to being a Messenger. Control is hard to attain, although she is working hard, and Greg just doesn't seem to be able to help. Hopefully, a ball will take her mind off things!

Once again, full of action and adventure, this book will delight and enthral as the words jump off the page at you. With a multitude of lovable characters, dangerous situations, baddies to dislike, and heroes to swoon over (including a bad-boy come good), then there is something here for everyone.

Exceptionally well written, with no editing or grammatical errors to disrupt the reading flow, this book continues the story with a smooth pace, whilst leaving you wanting more. An excellent addition to the Chronicles, and I look forward to reading more.

I didn’t think it was capable for the series to get better. Haskell is such a talented writer and story teller that the second installment not only expands on the first, it enriches it. In this novel, we are treated to more in-depth look at the world and mythology, which are both intricate and original.

Plus I absolutely love Rio. She is a solid character, it’s hard to not like her. She has such a strong, dynamic personality, and yet we are allowed to see the inner workings of her mind where her insecurities are evident.

A steady paced novel with an interesting world and entertaining characters, Sanyare is an immediate favorite that I tend to follow to its end.

Okay

Okay only. Not as great as the first book. Got tired of Rei being impotent on her hardly having any power. She should at least been given some great power to counteract her weak one t. Got tired ok f her poor me attitude and the I am only human excuse whenever her power doesn't work. This book does give an idea of who the main culprit but not enough cuz she can't. Too much negative and not enough romance to me. Still recommend this book but expect Rei to be with power. Cliffhanger is abrupt on this one. Writing was very imaginative.

I loved the first book in the series and called it my first "proper" fantasy novel, including dragons, faes and fairies. Unfortunately, I was disappointed by this second book, but can't quite put my finger on why. I think it's because it seemed to be too much involved with "human" actions (trials, experiments, MRI machines, etc) and lost its original touch. The storyline just fell a bit flat, seemed forced and wasn't quite as intruiguing as the original. Or maybe the novelty had just worn off for me. Shame.

I love that everyone, from the ancient and wise peace maker to the young and brash heir is fallible and weak. I'm also impressed that we learn with the protagonist and she suffers for our common lack of knowledge about the verious realms, their histories, and their politics. I've read a lot of "the hero magically understood everything" stories; seeing everyone's failures is both more interesting, and motivating to read the rest of the series and learn along with the Apprentice Sanyare.

Book 2 is great.

Megan Haskell did it again. Book 2 is great. The characters have been developed even more. The storyline is even more intense. You don't want to miss out, so make sure you read this book. I am ready for book 3.

This is a good story that will keep you occupied, but sadly that is it. I found some places were a little long winded and the turn it takes at the end was a let down. Will I read the next one, well I can't say right now, because of the way this ended. I might, we will see. OK read.

This is the second book in the series. It was a good read, but it was a little confusing in spots. It still took nothing away from the characters or story line. The story was just as intriguing as the last book.

Another fast paced tale

Book two of the series is fast paced story of betrayals, murders and magical mayhem. One of the main characters is lost, kept waiting for him to be brought back to life but it never happened. Shame he had some bumbling charm v

It was a struggle to finish. The writing seems very simple like the first book. Gives me first time author vibes and I just didn't want to punish myself again. I really wanted to like it. The world and the characters had potential but the writing style ruined it all for me.

Her book 3 please!

Great characters, great plot, hot elves that you sometimes want to kick, this book has it all! There's a few bad decisions made that make you roll your eyes but, all in all, a really good read. Can't wait for book 3!

The second book of a trilogy often sags, as the characters simply continue the quest from the previous book but haven't gotten to the exciting climax of the next book. Haskell avoids that here by quickly plunging the characters into an even worse situation than they were in before, raising the stakes considerably, and setting Rie a "ticking clock" which means she'd better solve this problem fast, or else! We see more of some of the characters from the first book, and meet many more allies and enemies. The action is fast-paced and the danger just gets worse and worse.

Rie is trying to understand her new roles and responsibilities, too, which is an additional challenge. I like that we see how hard Rie has to work to learn her new skills, and that she's not always successful. I hate the old trope of the "chosen one" who is suddenly brilliant at everything.

There were a few places where the characters made terrible decisions and I didn't quite see the rationale (especially at the ending). But at least they're being punished for their own mistakes and not by random events. Plus I like that the bad guys pick up on this and interpret these actions in the worst possible way, turning everyone else against our protagonists.

We also get to see more of the universe in this book, including meeting more types of fae and adventuring into new realms. Haskell blends many classic fantasy species and myths into her universe, so there's an old favorite here for just about everyone.

This book didn't feel quite as tight as the first one, but that's pretty common with trilogies, and the good outweighs the minor flaws, I'd say. It's a fast, fun read, full of dangerous action scenes and twists that kept me page-turning to the end -- and wanting to read the next book right away!

I am amazed at how much I am enjoying this series. I would be hard pressed to choose a favorite character, which is just the way I like fantasies to go. And in Book 2, we meet so many new ones it makes it even more difficult.

Rie is really screwed this time around. Not only as she been named as Garamaen's apprentice and heir, she's now got assassins after her and Prince Daenor has been accused of being one of them! Obviously her antagonists have figured out how much she needs him so they made sure to eliminate him from her sphere of companions. So on she must go without his help.

But she has her Pixies, and oh how I love those Pixies! Not to mention Braegan, well, actually, let's not mention him! As she travels to the Shadow Realm she needs a guide, and allows Braegan to be that for her. Mistake? Maybe. Garamaen, or Greg as she calls him, is trying to help her learn her duties, and keep her out of trouble in the meantime, but she needs to learn a great deal about whatever powers she has, and with Rie, it's always hit or miss, more often miss. She also meets lots of other new characters in this book, which I won't name because that would take all the fun out of our meeting them on your own.

Once again, with great world building and character building, Megan has also proved an affinity towards extremely creative and entertaining story building. I was swept up from the first word to the last and now can't wait for book 3. So much has been happening just in the first two books that I'm literally on edge wondering what will befall them in book 3.

What a storyteller you are, Megan Haskell! This was so Very Very Well Done! Watching you grow into this series has been a joy and a pleasure. Keep going as you have and there will be no stopping you from reaching the top of your genre! Very Very Well Done Indeed!

I loved the first book, Sanyare The Last Descendant and was excited to see where Rie's adventures continued. Both books were such a thrill to read. Megan Haskell did an amazing job picking up right where she left off. Again a book full of magic, adventure, tragedy, trust, mystic creatures and romance.

At the beginning Rie has a new role to fill, being Apprentice Sanyare. Although it isn't going as smoothly as she had hoped. She isn't going to give up. Rie is strong and fighting hard to do her best. She doesn't want to fail or to let anyone down.

Can't wait for a third book to come out. This is a series I would recommend to anyone.

Absolutely Awesome!! I have read mixed reviews on many reading sites for this series and author. I will not get technical and give a college like review because I'm no longer in college and I read for the joy and relaxation. This wonderful series came to me by way of BookBub with the first book free. I immediately purchased each subsequent volume on Amazon! I thoroughly enjoyed everything about the story and characters that I had to immediately continue to the next book. I was never disappointed and remained immersed in the unfolding story. I was sick with the flu and my total immersion in the story was a great pain reliever and fully took my mind off of "suffering". I will eagerly seek out anything else this author writes!!

Loved book one and was anxious to read the next installment in this excellent series. I love this series, and the books never seem long enough-- sigh. Some good progression on the overall story line, but there is still more to come-- and I can't wait. This installment of the Sanyare Chronicles explores Rie's doubts about her worthiness to Apprentice to the Sanyaro. After a century under the High Elves' thumb, Rie finds herself having trouble manifesting her (proven) powers. Book two seems to explore how self-doubt can prevent us from growing into our potential. Another wonderful story in this series, and I'll be eagerly awaiting book three.

While the Book 1 was a bit more slow-moving, I found the faster pace of Book 2 much more exciting. I received this book in exchange for an honest review and I can honestly say I enjoyed it very much. The characters (Rie, Greg/Garamaen, and the accompanying supporting cast) were all a thrill to read, and I loved the exploration of the various realms in the world.
Wait until you hit the last few chapters: you'll love the plot twist there! It totally caught me by surprise—not an easy thing to do.
All in all, an excellent Book 2 that makes me want to find out what the heck happens in Book 3 to bring the story to a close.
