Such a great introduction to children's book illustrators!!! I feel inspired as a parent of young artists to keep our art area well stocked. I am a nosey person so it's nice to know things about the artists who have illustrated books we've been reading for years!
You’ll either find this interesting because it’s amusing how earnestly he’s describing shit that would be second nature to most people today. Also the brush up on renaissance Italian history is giving you major flashbacks to playing assassins creed as a child, which is awesome and just interesting… or you’ll be taking it way too seriously bc you were a poly-sci major and you’re trying to understand how to make friends, dominate your HOA, or undercut your boss. In that case you’ll probably hate it when it can’t deliver those things and you deem it as simple minded. Either way, it’s so short and so surface level it shouldn’t stir up too intense of feelings in either direction.
My edition was 1992 so a little out of date. Really good, quick intro to a few of the wonderful Illustrators from then, some still at it. It's a kid's book so some of the questions are goofy. (Actually I hear adults ask these questions of authors and artists sometimes, like do they have a pet?...) However was happily surprised to see African American Illustrators speaking. Leo and Diane Dillon especially.
First of all, both Amazon and Good Reads have the wrong front cover for this book. To see what this book looks like, look up other volumes of by Pat Cummings. I am definitely getting Volume One, because it has David Wiesner, who is one of the very best Children's writers and illustrators in today's market. Look up "Art and Max" to get an example of his work. He has many books on Amazon.I love this book because it not only has great conversations with the artists, but examples of their work in color. Many of the work is quite humorous, and very contemporary.
The interviews in this book are interesting and will give students a good idea of how books are written and how the writing process takes place. They will be introduced to various writers and if they are like me, they will be inspired to write stories of their own!
I happened upon these books while shelving in the children's section. They have inspired and encouraged me, a treasure trove of more information about illustrating than I've found anywhere else.
