One year ago a team of researchers set off for the desolate Blackstone Islands with hopes of spotting a mythical bird from indigenous folklore—and never returned. Now, college student Carrie Red Feather has been asked by the charming Dr. David Lewis to join a team of scientists to return to the islands in search of their lost colleagues.
Instead, they stumble upon a new species of intelligent—and terrifying—life dating back to prehistoric times. Carrie finds herself at the brink of an amazing discovery and an unexpected journey that may end in hope or heartbreak.
I first learned of this book in a review in Prehistoric Times magazine, promptly bought it and left it to linger on my Kindle until recently. The story is far more convoluted than I expected, and very well written. I especially liked the dynamics of the personal relationships with a depth of character and realism far beyond what you'd expect in a genre novel. Although the story ends rather neatly, the twists and turns it takes imply a story that would resonate in the world far beyond what the novel actually covers. It doesn't seem that a sequel is likely but I'd gladly read something else by this author.
