Fandom: Harry Potter -------------------------------------------------- A disabled Harry comes to Hogwarts story. Everyone expects him to be like his dad, but how can he be with such a different past? A Slytherin Harry takes on Hogwarts in an unusual way.
This is an interesting fic looking at a very different kind of Harry Potter; the idea of a severely disabled child and the impact that would have on his actions, reactions and thought processes is very well managed. The author clearly has some clear understanding of the difficulties of living with severe disabilities and this is depicted well throughout. I also found the depictions of other Slytherin characters like Nott to be well done, bringing to life characters that are little more than background in canon. I originally gave this four stars, but after some thought, I am reducing this to three and that is for several reasons.
Firstly, the Dumbledore bashing is just unreal. I don't mind a small amount of character bashing in any fic, after all it is the authors depiction of the characters, however there is a point where it becomes stupid and this more than passed that threshold. You have a Dumbledore who is somehow insane, evil, manipulative and rather stupid... which is a distinctly unlikely combination. Even the insane, evil, manipulative aspects are taken way beyond the realms of reason though. It's as if he's been replaced by a cartoon evil overlord type villain. Similar can be said for Ron, who is a bullying, bumbling idiot with no redeeming features. Some aspects of canon are changed in strange ways to highlight this, with Ron being the one taking Neville's remembrall for instance. You can see the spite in Malfoy... in Ron, it's just the author's dislike coming to the fore.
Secondly, the fluff. Whilst I admit to enjoying the banter between Harry, Snape and Moody, there is a level of soppy sentimentalism here that I can't see either of the adults falling into if they were actually in character. I'm all for Severus being used as a mentor, guardian, but again there are limits to where you can twist that character without it just becoming out of character. If there had been less of the sap, I probably wouldn't have minded Moody's sexual innuendo's but both together again just grated after a while. And finally, I have to admit that I found it got rather silly towards the end. I can't say why without massive spoilers, but the entire thing took somewhat of a farcical twist which seemed completely at odds with the original tone of the fic.
So whilst this is a touching and periodically heart wrenching fic, it could be seriously improved with a more balanced portrayal of several characters, most obviously Dumbledore and Ron. I will admit that it kept me reading from start to the last written chapter. It's a pity that the flaws are quite so obvious, as the author has an engaging writing style that deserves better in many ways and clearly has some interesting and original ideas.
Fantastic! When it's time for Harry Potter to show up to Hogwarts, no one expects the deaf cripple that appears. One leg is a magical prosthesis, three fingers are missing, he's covered in burn scars, and he's deaf. What happened to him? Slytherin?! When it all comes tumbling out, you'll see why Snape takes his newest snake under his wing and why Moody steps up to help as well. And Dumbledore? Well, things don't go his way.
But beware - this is a one-off fic with no sequel. I'm dying for more, but there isn't any.
