My name is Christopher Greyson, and I am a storyteller.

Since I was a little boy, I have dreamt of what mystery was around the next corner, or what quest lay over the hill. If I couldn’t find an adventure, one usually found me, and now I weave those tales into my stories. I am blessed to have written over twenty novels.

My love for tales of mystery and adventure began with my grandfather, a decorated World War I hero. I will never forget being introduced to his friend, a WWI pilot who flew across the skies at the same time as the feared, legendary Red Baron. My love of reading and storytelling eventually led me to write and it’s the best job I’ve ever had.

I love to hear from my readers. This book, although a part of a series, is actually the one to read first. It's a prequel to the first book written, GIRL JACKED, which introduces the reader to Jack Stratton.. as a teenager. His plans are to enlist in the military, then go to college, then apply to the police department.

Everything is going to plan until Stacy Shaw disappears one evening. Leaving work, her car wouldn't start, so she made the decision to walk home ... through the park. Somewhere along the way she went missing.

When Jack's foster mother asks him to look into the woman's disappearance, he quickly gets way too involved. Repeated warnings from the detectives and his own father do not seem to deter him. He winds up caught between cops and criminals.

Jack has an interesting back story. He was raised in brothels by his prostitute mom.. until she just walked away and left him to find his own way. He never knew his father. Something burns within him ... to prove that he is not garbage, not trash, and he is going to make something of himself.

I loved the interaction, especially of Jack and his former foster brother, Chandler. Chandler is a big guy .. and he's black. The two of them get a lot of mileage of telling people that they are brothers ... can't you see the resemblance? Jack is white. There is much love and humor and if one of them is going to wind up in trouble, so will the other. They plan on enlisting at the same time.

This is a well written mystery. The characters are solidly well rounded. There are lots of suspects and it's fun watching Jack and Chandler figure out clues.

I absolutely plan on reading the entire series .... I'm looking forward to more of his adventures.

Many thanks to the author / Greyson Media Associates / Netgalley for this Unproofed Advance Review Copy. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

I have not yet read any of Christopher Greyson's series about police detective Jack Stratton but I plan to now after reading this prequel I got through Amazon's Kindle Unlimited.

In this book, Jack is just 17 with big plans. He intends to go into the Army after high school graduation to learn skills and get help paying for college then go to college and then go into the Police Academy. It is a fine plan for a good-hearted young man who has suffered a lot. He never knew his biological father and his biological mother was a neglectful drug-addled hooker who raised him among pimps and hookers. Then she abandoned him and white Jack went into a black foster home headed by the sweet but tough , nurturing and wise Aunt Haddie. Though adopted later by a white teacher and his wife, they all consider Aunt Haddie to be family and Aunt Haddie's son Chandler, also 17 with the same plans as Jack, is very much a brother to Jack. I love the relationships in this book!!! Aunt Haddie also has a daughter Michelle who is Chandler's sister and has taken in an abused young white foster daughter named Alice who prefers to be called Replacement.

Jack's career plans are almost derailed when he decides to investigate the murder of Stacy Shaw, a young woman who seemed to have it all. She was married, 3 months pregnant with their first child, had a nice home and a good career. One night after work, her car would not start so she decided to walk home through the dark park since her husband was out of town (or was he?!) on a business trip. Jack and Chandler find the body. When a gangsta boy Jack dislikes is arrested and accused of the killing, Jack goes to the jail with Aunt Haddie and Jay Martin's mom and they both beg Jack to try to help him. Jay happened to have the dead woman's ATM card in his jacket but it was his bad boy brother Tommy who had found the card and wore Jay's jacket to the ATM to try to use it.

Jack and Chandler were reluctant to get involved but Jack becomes convinced Jay is innocent. He has several run-ins with Detective Vargas who is in charge of the case and becomes convinced Jack is involved. During the course of the investigation, Jack does risky but clever things. Who killed Stacy? Was it Jay or Tommy after all? Or was it her cheating husband Michael? Or maybe her embezzling boss Leland Chambers who she argued with that night and who was seen in the park that night? Or did Jeremy the slow-witted janitor who had a crush on her do it? Or her co-worker Betty? It could even be the homeless crazy guy Vlad. With so many suspects, Jack has his hands full investigating while the loyal Chandler tries to keep from getting killed.

I had never read a Jack Stratton book before so I never realized that this book told his back story. It was a good read. I personally would not label it a thriller it was more a mystery with ALOT of red herrings thrown in. What made me enjoy the story more is the main characters-you wanted Jack and his best friend Chandler to succeed. I think they are great role models and would recommend this book to young adults in a heartbeat.

Received from the Publisher and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

And Then she was Gone is part of a series of books in the Jack Stratton series. This is the only book in the series that I have read and it stood as a stand alone book for me. I think for those who have read the previous books in the series, it must have been nice seeing the main character as a teenager.

The book opens as a young woman named Stacy Shaw is leaving work. She is a happily married woman with a baby on the way. Prior to leaving work she has an uncomfortable exchange with her employer and leaves to spend a quiet night at home. When her car does not start, she decides to walk home. Taking a path she has taken in the past, a path that takes her through a dark park.

Jack Stratton is a teenage boy who was raised by his prostitute Mother until he was removed from her care and placed in foster care. He is determined to have a good life and has enlisted in the Army and wants a job in law enforcement.. When another young man is arrested by police due to having the missing woman's personal belongings, Jack's adoptive Mother asks him to look into Stacy Shaw's disappearance. Aided by his friend, Chandler, Jack begins to investigate the woman's disappearance and has several suspects in mind.

While reading this book, I often thought "Is this book YA?"," Isn't this book YA?" and "Is this a YA love story/mystery?". Like many reviewers, I felt this book read very much like a young adult book. A young adult book where the teenagers don't really seem like teenagers. Jack and Chandler did not really fell like 17 year olds to me. They both seemed too mature, did not speak like teenagers (no swearing, no slang, no inappropriate banter, etc.). Are there mature teenagers in the world? Yes, of Course. Are there some who do not swear or use bad language? I'm sure there are but these characters just did not feel right to me as teenagers. Also, why would an adult ask a 17 year old to investigate missing woman's case?

The killer is caught in the end - of course by Jack. It was a pretty cut and dry mystery. Since I mentioned YA, I do feel this book would do better as a YA book. This book felt pretty clean cut to me and that is not necessarily a bad thing. I believe that readers who do not like graphic violence in their books would find this book appealing as would younger readers. For me personally, I like a little grit with my murder mysteries.

The early life of Det Jack Stratton as told thru his eyes while he was trying to help the police solve the crime of a murdered young pregnant woman. It explains his early relationship in his foster home where he was placed after his mother lost custody of him and how those relationships shaped his future. Great insight into how he became the detective he is as an adult. Good read. I would like to thank the Publisher and Net Galley for the chance to read this ARC.

Simple and Clever Book : 3/5

This was my first Jack Stratton book, and also first from the author Christopher Greyson.
The plot is pretty basic, a case of missing girl, and the quest to find her. Our protagonist Jack is a teenager and an aspiring detective, and as predictable as it can be, he jumps right into the investigation of the missing case, of his own will.

As I mentioned, the plot is simple but the book is written cleverly, it's much more than just a suspense thriller, it also extends the story line to Jack's personal life, his endeavors and notions. This very approach of the writer makes this book, more of a full circle kind of book.

The writing style is very simple and thus it makes it an easy read. I recommend it to one and all who are looking for a book which can kill their time leisurely.

Mrs. Stacy Shaw has been disappeared from Thursday night after office. She is the last one who left the office that night. The last person who saw her is Betty Robinson; Betty’s husband; Stacy’s boss Leland Chambers, whom she argued that evening and Jeremy; one of the ground workers from office. She has blond hairs, height 5’2”, and aged twenty six, married to Michael Shaw for seven years.

One suspect Jay Martin has arrested in charge of using Disappeared woman’s ATM card, he accepted the charges but denied anything to do with Mrs. Stacy’s disappearance. Police is sure Mr. Martin is behind the lady’s disappearance. Case Closed.

Jack Stratton will be joining the army in few months and planned to become a detective in Police department after serving in army. He accidentally bumped into detective Clark who is a friend of his father, one who adopted him and is a math teacher.

The story marveled in every respect and author left no stone unturned to make it a masterpiece. The twists, the suspense, the turn of events and the way they turned. It is not a serious suspense thriller or a wild chase of suspect in every direction possible. It is a story which has its own pauses and run time. It’s is like a smooth walk on a bumpy road. It’s enthralling, humorous, and blood-tingling.

First time reading this author, and I wasn't let down. Young Jack Shelton is a wannabe police officer and just won't mind his own business when a woman goes missing in a park.
Jack uncovered things the police didn't, which I found odd. He was only seventeen after all.
Jack and his friend Chandler got into trouble numerous times with the police as Jack wouldn't leave the case alone.
The story had some good twists, and I liked the young slueth vibe.
It's not a bad read.
I might read more in this young detective series.

After writing several novels about police detective Jack Stratton, author Christopher Greyson decided to write about Stratton’s teenage years and his determination to devote his life to police work.

This novel depicts the teenage Stratton’s efforts to assist police in solving a crime in which a young, pregnant woman was murdered. Jack was the person who discovered the woman’s body. He was overwhelmed by the need to provide justice for the young woman.

This fast paced story has a strong sense of place and great character development. It is hard to put down as Jack tries to connect the pieces of information to determine who committed the crime. The police try to discourage him from interfering with the investigation, and threaten to arrest him for impeding their investigation.

Mystery, suspense, and action abound as you root for the young Jack Stratton as he doggedly follows his leads.

Thank you to Net Galley, Greyson Media and Christopher Greyson for giving me the opportunity to read the ARC of this realistic detective novel!

I seriously thought I lost brain cells reading this book. No, seriously. There were many times I wanted to stop reading or just skip to the end because I had already figured it out - but one thing you can't call me is a book quitter. Even if I hate the story. So a moment of peace for the brain cells that died reading this book before my review. Thank glob I didn't buy the whole series - I'd feel compelled to read them all because I spent money and I read everything I buy.) Also - the rest of the books are "Jack" themed titles and probably the most ridiculous is "Girl Jacked" - that should have been a hint to just NO!

Ok. So you want me to believe that the cops are letting a 17-year old kid solve crimes just because a cop did him a favor and took him on a few rode-alongs and was a mentor? The fact that this is a series is mind boggling. I knew who the murderer was as soon as the act was committed, and suspected him before it happened. This is just highly implausible. Nancy Drew/Hardy Boys but written for adults - it just doesn't work.

This is more of a prequel to Jack Stratton series where he was just a teenager here and was about to enter the army before pursuing being a detective. I love that he went Nancy Drew on a case that even he wasn't allowed to work on a case yet, and still considered as a civilian who can hinder the investigation of the police, but he didn't waver. His character is determined and he's a won't-give-a-crap-about-anything-but-doing-what-is-needed-to-do-at-the-moment type of guy. And though he is doing something really uncalled for, I was on his side the whole time. Building that kind of character, I knew I was about to read this series because of his character alone and anticipate all the kinds of trouble he might encounter because of that personality. Jack Stratton as a detective just promises actions and adventures beyond what is expected of him so I am looking forward to how this series will go.

And Then She Was Gone, A Detective Jack Stratton Novel by Christopher Greyson is a riveting and fascinating book. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough.

Jack Stratton is approaching his eighteenth birthday, which he calls 'garbage day' and hates because it was just a day set by social workers.

He has a strong support system with Aunt Haddie and Chandler, his foster brother. His adoptive parents are loving and give strong guidance.

"Jack swallowed. Not even his father could match the stern look that Aunt Haddie could pull off; she was a master at it. Her stare pinned him in place and he didn't even think about moving. He couldn't even look away, though he desperately wanted to."

It kept me guessing, which I like, so I gave it five stars. I will add more of the Jack Stratton books to my reading list.

I received a complimentary copy from Greyson Media Associates Books and NetGalley. That did not change my opinion for this review.

I was thrown for a bit when I first started reading this novel. I didn't realize it was a prequel to the Jack Stratton Detective Series. This is when Jack was just a 17-year-old boy and he and his "adopted" brother stumble across a nasty murder. Jack's main objective is to ultimately become a police officer, which he does but you begin to wonder if that is going to happen. He finds himself in some precarious situations trying to find the find the killer of pregnant woman. This novel is fast paced with well-developed characters. It left me with a feel good message of a young man who surrounds himself with the right people and is trying to do well in spite of his not so stable upbringing.

Eh......

My first and last Greyson book. The OVERLY simplistic writing style and predictability of the plotlines to the elementary dialogue structure is more appropriate for junior high students - probably my fault for not realizing that the younger set IS likely his target audience.

What happened to the "thriller" part?

I think the most amusing part of the book was the banter about Superman and Batman. But since that only lasted for about 3 seconds (and not even integral to the plot and all), I don't know what quite to do with this one.

This was just so blah.

Wow -- what great writing and obviously the start of a new, exciting series featuring our protagonist, Jack Stratton. In this introduction, he's only 18, still in high school, and wanting to enter the US Army in order to pay for his future at the police academy.

Jack is a tightly strung young man with horrors in his past. He wants to do good -- to be a hero. When a young woman, Stacy Shaw, goes missing and is later found murdered, Jack gets involved because a kid from the neighborhood has been accused of the crime. Jack is adopted but spent part of his life with foster parents and this tie is very strong. He's still in contact with Aunt Haddie, and his best friend (and foster brother), Chandler. Jack is intent on investigating this crime and Chandler goes along with him. The pair have a great dynamic, and they have foster siblings who also become involved in Jack's pursuit of truth. He won't back down even though the police have warned him off. He talks to witnesses and presents a theory of the murder to the police.

What I liked about this novel was the interaction between the characters, the dialog, the suggestion of a horrible past to overcome, and the sheer grit that Jack emanates as part of his personality. He's a great character and I only wish I could read the rest of this series, in order, to see how he evolves. Yes, the case is solved and Jack's snooping in an ongoing investigation is vindicated -- but the ride is so well worth the read. I really enjoyed it! Hard to put the book down as I was eager to see how it all played out.

Thank you to NetGalley for the e-book ARC to read and review. I definitely will be looking for more of this author's titles in the future.

3.5 stars. At first I thought this was a YA book but it turns out to be the prequel to the Jack Stratton detective series.

Jack went into foster care with African American Aunt Haddie after his parents died. It was a warm loving environment where he made a close friend called Chandler. He was later adopted by a teacher and his wife and has a good solid upbringing. When the story starts, Jack and Chandler have finished school and are waiting to turn 18 to enlist, then go to college, then join the police force - a good, solid plan for boys from modest homes. One day they're out and about and come across the body of a woman. Jack is quite affected by this and wonders how she came to end up dead. The police soon arrest someone from Aunt Haddie's neighbourhood but Jack and Chandler are convinced he is innocent.

Jack can't help himself from nosing around and poor old Chandler has to tag along. The police take a dim view of the boy's actions and they are skirting trouble. Any charge against them could jeopardise their future. Suspects abound but Jack's persistence finally pays off.

It was a good book, the characters were well likeable and the story hung together quite well. I thought some of the dialogue between jack and Chandler was a bit clunky or cheesy at times and some of the longer passages got tiresome but I'm hoping that once Jack is grown up and has his series as a police detective this might change so I'll press on for now.

A Teenage Boy Outdoes the Police in Finding a Killer

Stacey Shaw is leaving work late. After an unpleasant encounter with a co-worker, she gets to her car only to find it won’t start. Things were going well. Her husband, Michael, will soon be home, and she’s excited about the baby. Michael calls while she’s in the car, but not wanting to disturb him, she doesn’t tell him it won’t start. She decides to walk home through the park, but never reaches the other side.

Jack Stratton wants to be a policeman. He was a foster child, dumped by his mother. It makes him feel like he’s no good. To relieve his feeling of inferiority, he wants to help people.

A boy in the neighborhood where his foster mother, Aunt Hattie, lives, is arrested for Stacey’s murder. This is one person Jack doesn’t want to help, but Aunt Hattie convinces him to try. Unfortunately, this puts Jack in conflict with Detective Vargas, the detective investigating the case, and nearly lands him in jail.

If you enjoy Jack Stratton novels, this is a must read. Seeing Jack as a teen, gives you an enhanced idea of his character. Jack and his friends, Chandler and Kelly, are well fleshed out characters. The author makes the teenagers come to life and the dialog is realistic.

The plot will keep you guessing and rooting for Jack. He’s up against a detective who doesn’t want assistance from a teenager and is ready to toss Jack in jail to prove it. The scenes between Jack and Detective Vargas felt very much like a contest between good and evil.

I recommend this book if you like a good mystery where the clues have to be teased out and don’t just fall into the hero’s lap.

I read this EARC courtesy of Greyson Media Associates and Net Galley. pub date 10/01/16

This was my introduction to Jack Stratton, and it was a pleasant experience. Jack is 17 and has his future all planned out. He's already enlisted in the Army and will leave for basic training as soon as he turns 18. After serving 2 years, he plans to go to college on the GI bill and then pursue a career in law enforcement.

Problem is, he needs to have a perfectly clean record and he's continually getting in scrapes with the law of one kind or another. You see, Jack just loves to investigate crimes and in so doing, he regularly skims the border of legality.

All in all, a very satisfying read.

When I started this book and realized that the protagonist Jack was a 17-year-old wannabe policeman, I thought maybe I had downloaded a young adult book by mistake. Or maybe the first chapter was in the past and was just setting up the character at an older age. But no, he was a teen-ager throughout the book. Jack is honorable and wants to do the right thing but so reckless he endangers several lives. But, like a good Nancy Drew or Hardy Boys book (which is what it seemed like to me), all came right in the end. I might have to read another book in the series just to see if Jack matures, but without more depth to the character and the plot, I won't read any more.

Did not enjoy this book. Although the reviews were very good I found it to be more suitable to teens. I appreciate the lack of profanity but overall the story was silly and unbelivable. It reminded me or Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys updated for the 21st century.

**** 4 Cranky Stars ****

Stacy Shaw has her whole life ahead of her: new job, new house, a baby on the way and a doting husband. After working late one night, she disappears in the dark.

Jack Stratton is seventeen and headed for the Army. He's always wanted to be police officer and his plans for the Army put him on track to achieving his aims.

He's just started dating a beautiful girl and for a kid who was abandoned, put in the foster system and doesn't know where his real parents are, Jack's life is on the up and up.

That is... until his world collides with Stacy Shaw's disappearance. Pressed on by codes of honor from his old neighborhood, Jack inserts himself and his best friend, Chandler into Stacy's investigation. Then all his carefully laid plans begin to unravel.

I've been in a book funk until I read this story. Filled with likable characters (main and secondary), the book keeps you interested until the last page.

Packed with red herrings, tense, and not to mention laugh out loud moments, this was a great escape into a 'whodunnit'.

I recommend this book for all ages. It's clean and would appeal to young adults as well as those a bit older. I'm looking forward to following the adventures of Jack Stratton and the wonderful cast of characters in his life.

I was excited to see this book was #0 in a 9-book series. I thought I was being given the chance to discover a new series of books that I would get lost in. Seeing that Jack was a teenager wasn't a big deal at first - I even enjoyed the reckless way he chased down a junkie (the author's words, not mine) to retrieve a purse that had been stolen from an old woman. I assumed this was a glimpse into his teenage years before he became a police officer.

I was wrong, as the entirety of this book (or at least as much as I could stand to read) was all about a teenage Jack being smarter than everyone (including the cops).

And not only is he a teenager, but he's one of those "perfect" characters who does absolutely everything for everyone without asking for anything in return (unless, of course, he's badgering his former foster brother turned best friend into eating right and exercising even though we're given no reason to believe said friend had a problem in the first place).

To be honest, this seemed more like it was written for a young-adult audience just dipping a toe into the world of thriller novels (I would call this a stepping stone between books like Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys and the grittier, more adult books. It's not quite as childish as the former, but not quite thrilling enough to appeal to adults either).

Considering there are other novels in this series, I may pick another up later down the road to see if Jack evolves past his cardboard cut-out goody two-shoe persona, but I expect that won't be for a long time. I need to forget this one first.

DISCLAIMER: I received a complimentary copy of this novel from the publisher. This has not affected my review in any way. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are 100% my own.

I have seen this book before but passed on it. Whatever the reason I was compelled to buy it. The book is written well my main disappointment was based because the suspense and murder are the main focus.
*************SPOILERS***************

I thought I'd be okay but the gruesome murder of Stacy Shaw was sad and hard for me to get out of head. I think it was because Stacy was pregnant and it was just so heartbreaking to me because she had thought she'd never be able to have kids and was so happy. Touching her tummy and such just got to me.
************END OF SPOILERS**********

I'm not going to tell you the idea of the book because I think the description of the book explains it well. Jack Stratton the H is a young man with big plans and he has a romantic interest in Kelly. It's not a very established romance as I've stated and so the build up or development between them is virtually invisible. It's cute but I'm not sure how I really felt about Kelly. She is young and shops a lot. I can't relate as I hate to shop but I digress there is a little friction between her family and her ex.

Most of the book focuses on Jack and his friend Chandler following leads. I think if you like suspenses this one would be a good read as it keeps you doubting your first hunch. My first hunch was right but I watch a lot of Law and Order SVU. The beginning will throw you off but statistics were there in the back of my head that kept going back to one person. I don't want to give it away so I'm stopping there and saying for .99 it's entertaining, clean but beware it is sad and a little disturbing to visualize some of the scenes. Enjoy!

Part of the Jack Stratton series. This takes us back to when Stratton was just 17 years old, living with his adoptive parents, and still hanging out with his best bud Chandler (a former foster-black-brother). Chandler and Jack have plans of joining the Army after graduating and getting their college education that way. Jack plans to go into law enforcement after that. Chandler and his sister Michelle are still living with the foster mother that also raised Jack before he was adopted, and they are all very bonded. In this one Jack is introduced to the girl who will be called "Replacement" as she will be Chandler's replacement in the hood when he goes into the Army. She also is living in the foster home.

Jack and Chandler get involved "unofficially investigating" in the murder of a local pregnant woman, and Jack being a gumshoe at heart just has to figure it all out... much to the objection of his father, and the local PD/detectives working the case.

This was ok, entertaining, but at times frustrating. The subject matter was very serious, but what with the bantering between the teenagers, got a bit dragged out for my taste. I've read and liked a couple of others however, with these same characters as adults that I enjoyed more.

This series starter by what seems to be prolific author Christopher Greyson, begins the journey of young Jack Stratton in his quest to join the Army & become a police officer.
Jack is a chronic do-gooder in spite of his own past or maybe because of it & in the face of any & all consequences. This story takes his amateur investigation through a variety of well constructed clues, suspects & motives. Greyson fleshes out Jack, his adopted family & surrounding characters in quick fire fashion which is refreshing!
Jack’s ‘case’ is the disappearance & subsequent murder of a young woman & he recklessly pursues leads despite being told at every stage he is in the way, wrong or just too young & inexperienced.
Jack is a lot like other archetype ‘heroes’ of this genre (think Reacher) & it was fun to read through his youthful, TV & how to book influenced sleuthing process.
Fast-paced & engaging, this seems like a solid series for quick, diversionary reads.

An enjoyable mystery with plenty of twists, and turns suspects to keep the reader guessing until the end. Jack Stratton is an insecure young man who feels the need to continually prove himself. He is adopted and can’t get over the fact that his mother gave him up. He has wonderful adoptive parents who love and support him but he gets into all kinds of trouble trying to solve a mystery of a murder and keep an innocent person from being imprisoned.

The author does a commendable job of creating suspense as Jack goes from one scenario to the next to try to find the killer. I found this first book intriguing and look forward to reading more about Jack and his mysteries.
