Mr. Barros has compiled and enhanced an amazing list of 600 academic phrases one can use in different kinds of discourse. What is more, each chapter is aligned with vocabulary and grammar tips facilitating our understanding of tricky instances in English academic writing. This miraculous short book should be considered as the Holy Bible for students in the process of writing their thesis or simply a research project. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in ameliorating their writing skills. It's short, accurate and really helpful to people of different levels and knowledge. Well done Mr. Barros!

Not recommended for people with an upper intermediate grasp of English. Surely one cannot learn academic writing by rote. I get that this phrasebook is meant to serve as a quick reference; however, the banality and cliché of the examples provided in this phrasebook would probably render most of them unfit to embellish your own writing. Following those examples you'll run the risk of writing like a mediocre researcher that struggles to find an audience.

This helped me a lot to finish my thesis. I was never once talked about academic language throughout my thesis process therefore I struggled a lot to find the exact words to express what I wanted to say. This phrasebook not only gave me lots of examples but it also provided valuable insights on the grammar and sentence construction. I would definitely use it again in the future!

This is a very unusual book and for some students it would be useful. It offers guided phrases to scaffold students through active voice, hedging of arguments and transitional sentences.

It feels a bit like paint by numbers, but for students requiring guidance about sentence and paragraph construction, this book maintains a solid role in their professional development.

A good list of phrases that you can use for academic writing. I found the examples of words that look similar but have a very different meaning especially helpful (like overlooked vs. overseen).
