Riley Unlikely: With Simple Childlike Faith, Amazing Things Can Happen

Rate this book

Riley Unlikely is the inspiring story of Riley Banks, who first traveled to Kenya at age 13, and has been back every year since bringing backpacks of school supplies and hygiene kits for young girls, developing relationships and friendships, and is currently, as a young millennial, raising money to build a complete learning complex in Kibwezi, Kenya for those who have nothing.

At age sixteen Riley learned that, because of a rare medical condition, she would never be able to have her own children. Devastating news to most young women, especially those who love children and have always dreamed of having their own family. But Riley’s response was: Kenya has given me a thousand children.

Riley’s stories of her trips to Kenya, her struggles to figure out how to best serve and care for these people she has fallen in love with, and her own unexpected health issues are funny, compelling and gripping.  Readers will find that God writes surprising stories in the lives of those who follow Him. Hard to put down, Riley Unlikely will inspire you to pursue your dreams and make a difference in your own world—and around the world.

I don’t remember when or how I stumbled upon Generation Next on Facebook, but it’s been a year or two of following the organization. Reading Riley’s story & how that non-profit came to be was so inspiring and I just loved this part near the end:
“When you’re serving just because you can, the work is useful and beneficial and good. But you’ll stay committed to it only as long as it stays convenient. By contrast, when you’re serving in a capacity where you feel called, you’ll move heaven and earth if you have to, to see it through.”

I don't know the last time I enjoyed a book about a modern missionary so much.
This book was told in a delightfully open style that invited you into Riley's life. I loved the way each story was told, not slogging through unnecessary details, yet not skimming over details that made the story stand out.
I love how she found her mission in life (Or God gave it to her, either way you want to put it). God's provision and obvious work in her life was so encouraging.
That last chapter was one of my favorites. I loved how she clearly said that her calling was not everyone's. That everyone has their own mission, and just because we can do something, doesn't mean we should.
My only complant was that every single chapter ended with something along the lines of "And we didn't know how that would effect our future." It got a bit grating by the end of the book.
This book was a great testament on how God can work through just one persons life to change a lot of lives. I would highly recommend this book.

“If anything has become clear to me … it’s the link between love and craziness.”

This is an awesome book. Not only is the subject a great, true story, but the writing is genuine. The voice sounds like a real person--a poised, enthusiastic young lady who is as amazed as anyone else at what a couple weeks in Kenya changed her life … and the lives of hundreds of American and Kenyan children.

“A pencil could be a source of fulfillment and deep satisfaction.”

A fast read; a fun read. Hard to put down. Ups and downs and twist like an adventure novel. It was/is an adventure story, but it’s true. It feels authentic, even as readers follow Riley on her unlikely journeys--literal and figurative.

“His response to my doubt is not punishment; it was unmistakable grace.”

A note about “with.” Co-authors, ghost writers, whatever you call them seldom get credit for what they do. Lisa Velthouse managed to capture the enthusiasm and personality of Riley Banks-Snyder. No mean task. Good job.

“The beauty of watching God work is that his ways are so utterly unlike ours that often his moves are so utterly unlike ours that often his moves seem to come out of nowhere.”

I love to read stories of how someone is called to a purpose in life. Riley's story of how she became a missionary in Kenya is fascinating as God slowly unfolds her calling. It is always hard to read about the great poverty of Africa.

A great read for all ages! I found it to be truly inspiring and uplifting! This book is Riley's story of how a dream can come true. Riley has a heart for Kenyan children and their needs. Many times she faces fear of failure, situations that could be dangerous, and obstacles which seem occur when plans are in motion. Riley continues to listen to God's calling in her life. This story is a wonderful example of the power of prayer. Regardless of your age always listen to God, pray, and believe with your whole heart in what God is telling you. When you stay in the will of God, He will always be with you in all that you do.

I didn't even get halfway through this one. It's obviously written by a kid and I got tired of her constant use of the word "I". Perhaps a young person would enjoy this diary style type of autobio, but I would have rather heard more about the mission this young lady was a part of rather than her own feelings all the time.

This book literally had me laughing and crying. Love it!

First of all, this book is AMAZING! I started this book while sitting in airports (and on airplanes) on my way home from World Youth Day. To give you a hint about how much I loved this book, let me tell you something. I was literally in tears at the Chicago airport while reading this, twice. I guess that could be my first piece of advice concerning this book: Be prepared for tears!

Riley Unlikely is the true story of Riley and Kenya. Riley first went to Kenya to visit her aunt and uncle (They were missionaries there.) when she was thirteen. She didn’t know then what an impact Kenya would have on her and how that one trip would change the course of her life.

Kenya and the people there, especially the orphaned children, became very important to Riley. In fact, Riley began a foundation, Generation Next, to help get school supplies for the children in need in Kenya. Over the years this foundation has grown, and continues to grow, headed by Riley herself.

Riley is a young woman who has refused to give up. when life got tough, and it did get tough for her, she trusted that God would see her through and that He had a plan for her. She has put her faith before everything and given so much of herself to the people of Kenya.

This young woman is making a difference in the world, one child at a time. I truly admire her and her dedication and her faith. She has not let anything stand in her way.

I received this book for free from the publisher via NetGalley for review consideration. This in no way affects my opinion of the title nor the content of this review.

Number of pages: 182

Genre: Non-fiction Missionary Biography

Series: N/A

Age recommendation: 14+

Summary: When Riley heard that her aunt and uncle were going to Kenya to be missionaries, she thought it was the coolest thing ever. She decided the only thing she wanted for her birthday and Christmas presents that year was to go to Kenya and help out. That trip changed her life. She saw all kinds of needs and determined that when she came back again, it would be to help solve those problems.

My thoughts: I love this book so much! It really shows that God can use anyone who listens to Him and is willing to follow His plan. Riley was only 13 years old when she went to Kenya for the first time, 14 when she started her own non-profit, and by the time she was 16 her non-profit had a school in Kenya, had passed out hundreds of hygiene kits/school backpacks and owned a thrift store to help fund her efforts in Kenya. I think that is really amazing, and proof that she was working on God’s behalf and He was blessing her efforts.
This book really opened my eyes to peoples’ lives in other countries. For example, Riley describes students sharing a pencil stub between their whole table of students because that’s all they had. They couldn’t afford more; parents can barely afford tuition let alone all the necessary school supplies, and the schools also can’t supply all the kids’ needs. Also, I was shocked that many young girls in Kenya are selling their bodies in order to buy period supplies for the school year (something not provided by the boarding schools they attend). That's terrible! I’ve never had to worry about where I’ll find the money for pads – if I have to, I can get some free from school or public libraries. For many Kenyan girls they know that without an education they will not be able to get out of poverty, so they are willing to risk everything in order to stay in school. However, many end up getting pregnant and have to quit school anyway.
Overall, the book was very well-written and eye opening to the current situation in Kenya. I highly recommend it!

My personal rating: 5/5 stars.

Was also tun?

A very inspirational work that gives the reader an idea of the excitement of leaving normalcy for the sake of pursuing a "God-inspired" goal; which is added to as the story unfolds. Certainly a combination of adventure and culture-shock as one gets a glimpse of Riley's experiences.

Something like reading passages from Riley's journal, the author wastes no time in getting the main points of her story across quickly and effectively, although there were some portions that may have been enhanced with more maps as visual aids (maybe with travel arrows and such).

One of the best parts about books like this, is that there isn't an absence of "voice," but there is an absence of unnecessary poetic flare; which can sometimes dilute, recolor, or rabbit-hole facts. Riley is very clear, honest, and spunky in her delivery. The book is very helpful for anyone who may be interested in mission related work, or wanting to gain interest, or wanting to know if their situation can change.

It is also an example of the re-assurance that Riley finds in the God she worships, despite the unexpected, despite the troubles, and despite the unlikely.

*listened to audiobook version*

A simple, exciting story of God’s plan for one of His daughters. I will definitely be researching Generation Next in the very near future.

I cried when they gathered so many school supplies from American elementary school kids, I was so amazed by their generosity. And was I livid (and convicted) when she described Americans as being too embarrassed to purchase sanitary pads that could save Kenyan girls from prostitution (long story, read the book). I felt Riley’s love for Kenya, and her desire to help these people who have far too little. What struck me is that she didn’t come and shout at Kenyans about Jesus’ love, she and her friends and family showed them. I thought of the William Booth quote, "You cannot warm the hearts of people with God's love if they have an empty stomach and cold feet." Maybe the people in Kenya don’t have cold feet, but the same principle applies to what Generation Next did/does. I know the Lord was working in my heart while listening to this book, and I know he is going to continue to do so. I wholeheartedly recommend!

As a 13 year old, Riley traveled to Kenya, accompanied by her father, to visit her aunt and uncle serving as short-term missionaries. Riley fell in love with the people and the nation and returned to the States wanting to go back. For the next several years, some combination of her family went taking school supplies, women’s health kits, or prepared to help with school construction and dedication. Riley is open about the need to trust God to provide the finances and materials. This is an amazing testimony of what can happen when one has the faith to let God direct the steps. My only downer is that there is no information at the end in terms of how to sow in to their organization.

Riley Unlikely gave me hope that one day I can make a difference in Africa! Riley Unlikely is about a girl named Riley who had a desire to make a difference in Africa. The book also shares how God opened the doors necessary to make Riley's desire happen. The book is very raw, and one can see the struggles Riley faces as she opens her non-profit. Riley tells the book from a place of vulnerability. Throughout the book, Riley becomes more relatable to the audience. The reader walks through Riley's diagnoses just as Riley did. The reader can feel inspired on how God can work in their own life. Riley Unlikely is a great book for people who want to feel inspired!

I came by this book in a time when I really needed it. I had signed on and was starting to fundraise for my first mission trip. I had three fail before this one.
This book helped me remember how if God lead me to this he would provide. It was an amazing story that has inspired me to live on the edge with my faith. On my mission trip I found a purpose for what I am to do in the future and this book reminded me that I can do it and something small can grow.
It is an extremely quick read that will leave you feeling inspired and excited.

Riley Banks-Snyder is truly an inspiration to all. I am so glad I purchased this book because it gives me an even deeper appreciation for Riley and her team. Her dedication to the children in Kenya is a beautiful love story that shows you that anyone can make a difference if they are called to do so. I enjoyed reading how Generation next evolved over the years eventually turning into the organization it is now.

A short and quick read. Riley is so naive but then she is a teenager and you have to remind yourself of that when she makes stupid, obvious mistakes like not realizing she needs a nonprofit to get donations. This book is a good cautionary tale in mistakes not to make when forming a nonprofit. The book is heavy on Christianity and praising God so it's not for everyone.

[Note: This book was provided free of charge by BookLook/Zondervan. All thoughts and opinions are my own.]

Although the author, who considers herself to be shy and timid by nature, and not the sort of person who desires attention, and therefore an unlikely person to be prompted by the Spirit to live a life of generosity to the people of Kenya, little could be more likely given the ironic sense of humor that God has. Neither is it ironic that such a loving soul like hers would manage to attract a future husband when she was barely a teenager, or that she would have a passion for helping children without having the ability to have children herself due to a rare disorder that involves the absence of a uterus. The author appears to be an idealistic and able young woman who had the sort of family that encouraged her spiritual entrepreneurship, and stands as a good example of the outcomes of idealism focused on the right ends that started thanks to the chance event that an uncle and aunt had become medical missionaries in Kenya during her youth and the fact that the author's idealism was encouraged by her parents. Given such fertile ground, it is entirely likely that the author's idealism and the benefits of her family background would bear fruit in spectacular and successful ways, and that the book would be a genuine joy to read and an example of particularly excellent literature from a young person [1].

The contents of this book are as delightful and straightforward as can be imagined, in that it consists of 30 short chapters that sequentially give the story of the author's involvement in East Africa that began with a trip on a lark to visit relatives who were there as medical missionaries, and then became an effort by the author herself to benefit the people she had met there, and which gradually increased in scope to involve the building of a school, the setting up of a non-governmental organization, Generation Next, that clearly hints at the idealism of the author and others of her generation, and organized efforts to provide sanitary napkins and school supplies to young people in Kenya with the aim of providing a generation of educated Kenyans whose cultural and intellectual capital is able to help the country rise from desperate poverty. The author even details her own struggles with her health, including fainting spells and numerous medical tests. Again, it is entirely likely that a young woman struggling with her own health and possessed of a sensitive heart for the suffering of others would dedicate herself to helping and serving others, belying the title.

This is a book that is remarkably polished, and probably a great deal of the credit for that belongs with the book's coauthor, who otherwise reminds properly invisible and allows the focus to be brought on Riley's compelling story, which will likely draw the attention of many readers. This is the sort of book that appears likely not only to draw the support and attention of those who are the author's age in their late teens and early twenties, and encourage them on their own humanitarian Christian efforts, but also will likely gain a great deal of attention from those who are older and whose efforts would likely be welcome for the author and her associates in serving the causes for which the author has dedicated her life. Given that the author plans on living in Kenya full time with her husband, there are likely many more stories to be found in Riley's life, and here is hoping that she has a long and successful career of service ahead of her. This book promises that, and that is a worthwhile achievement.
