About the author

Pierre Jules Théophile Gautier was a French poet, dramatist, novelist, journalist, and literary critic. In the 1830 Revolution, he chose to stay with friends in the Doyenné district of Paris, living a rather pleasant bohemian life. He began writing poetry as early as 1826 but the majority of his life was spent as a contributor to various journals, mainly for La Presse, which also gave him the opportunity for foreign travel and meeting many influential contacts in high society and in the world of the arts, which inspired many of his writings including Voyage en Espagne (1843), Trésors d'Art de la Russie (1858), and Voyage en Russie (1867). He was a celebrated abandonnée of the Romantic Ballet, writing several scenarios, the most famous of which is Giselle. His prestige was confirmed by his role as director of Revue de Paris from 1851-1856. During this time, he became a journalist for Le Moniteur universel, then the editorship of influential review L'Artiste in 1856. His works include: Albertus (1830), La Comédie de la Mort (1838), Une Larme du Diable (1839), Constantinople (1853) and L'Art Moderne (1856)

Odavno me neka knjiga nije ovako i ovoliko radovala tokom čitanja.
Gotjea sam ranije poznavala više kao romantičara sklonog malo okultnijim temama (Zaljubljeni đavo) koji je na mahove pravio i iskorake ka uvek dragim motivima androginije i nestandardne erotike (Gospođica de Mopen) i da mi je iko tada objasnio kakva je ovo knjiga bila bih šokirana. Šokirana i oduševljena!
Kapetan Frakas je, naime, kao prvo knjiga koja odiše... pa... zamislite da je neko uzeo da napiše Tri musketara u kojima na kraju nije otrovana Konstansa Bonasje. Dakle najklasičniji plašt i bodež, Luj XIII, raskošna odeća opisana s mnogo ljubavi, lukulovske gozbe opisane s jednako mnogo ljubavi, klasične aluzije i reference na kilo ("lukulovski" je beda jedna za početnike), i predivan spoj istorijskog romana i komedije del arte jer se zaplet vrti oko odluke dobrog, lepog i izuzetno siromašnog plemića da se pridruži trupi putujućih glumaca. Svako od glumaca odgovara svojoj ulozi, od Subrete do Skapena, a mladi baron Sigonjak preuzima lik i ulogu hvalisavca Frakasa ali NARAVNO da je visok, lep i plav hrabar, plemenit i najbolji mačevalac i da će mu ta odluka doneti razne doživljaje.

Žao mi je jedino što nisam ovaj debeli i prekrasni roman otkrila sa deset godina. Ovo bih čitala danima onako ležeći potrbuške i sa iskrama u očima. Jer ova knjiga na planu radnje i likova ima sveeee.* Ima sjajne scene mačevanja uključujući jednu za koju glavu dajem da je bila inspiracija ONOJ sceni iz Princeze neveste, ima pozorišne predstave, ljubavna pisma koja završe u pogrešnom džepu, jedan mali glumački igmanski marš, dramatična prepoznavanja, zabavne negativce sa zrnom časti u neočekivanom trenutku; ima najnajnajbolji lik male razbojnice s ove (pseudoodrasle) strane Andersenove Snežne kraljice; da, u stvari, mala razbojnica (s niskom lažnih bisera i nožem na koji je urezana španska izreka) je toliko kul lik da mi je samo zbog nje još jednom od početka do kraja žao što ovo nisam čitala s deset godina.

It is interesting to think that Alexandre Dumas Père's The Three Musketeers was written around the same time as Théophile Gautier's Captain Fracasse, although the latter was not published until almost thirty years later. Both have as their hero an impoverished Gascon nobleman of good family. Dumas's D'Artagnan goes directly into the King's Musketeers, whereas the Baron de Sigognac joins a troupe of traveling players and adopts the stage name of Captain Fracasse.

Fracasse is nothing more or less than pure swashbuckling wish fulfillment. Sigognac/Fracasse falls in love with the lovely ingénue of the troupe, Isabelle. All seems to be going well until Isabelle attracts the attention of the unprincipled young rake, the Duc de Vallombreuse, who attempts to kidnap her. Here we see Signognac come into his own and show himself to be the best swordsman in all of France.

I don't want to give away the plot, because it is a dandy -- however improbable it may be. Gautier has given us as many memorable characters as Dumas has with his Musketeers, especially the actors. Mention must also be made of the rogues, including the highwayman Agostino, his little girl aide Chiquita, the quixotic Jacquemin Lampourde and his associate Malartic.

It is difficult for me to say which of the two swashbucklers is better. Both are equally improbable, and both are written to delight young hearts and minds. As I raced to the predictably happy ending, I felt like a boy of twelve again. This book, which is readily available free or at a nominal cost for e-readers, is highly recommended to readers who are young at heart.

When I was twelve, I hated reading. So, my Mum, who was a French teacher, gave me this book telling me I will not regret it.
I decided to give it a try... and never stopped til the end of the book!
This story is really a great adventure one! A cloak-and-dagger's adventure with strong characters and a lovely love-story.
It's really fit for teenager who wants to discover the pleasure of reading and the escape that only books can provide.
But it's also for the oldest because admit it, a good adventure with a gentleman ready to do anything to save a Damsel in Distress is always a good idea and a great entertainment.
I thank everyday my Mum for her great idea because since I started this book, I never stopped reading and it wide opened a new and wonderful world to me!

Regno di Luigi XIII. Terra di Guascogna.
Lo sventurato barone Sigognac abita il suo castello ormai in rovina. Con lui è il vecchio e fedele servitore Pierre, il fido cane Miraut e il nero gattone Béelzébuth.
In una notte di gran tempesta qualcuno bussa al castello. Si tratta di una compagnia di teatranti. Hanno smarrito la via, i carri si sono impantanati, sono stanchi e hanno fame. Il barone li aiuta, li accoglie nella sua misera dimora. La sua vita cambia qui.
Alla vista di Isabelle è subito amore.
Il giorno successivo la compagnia di attori si dispone a ripartire.  Sigognac lascia la misera dimora per seguire il gruppo di artisti speranzoso di trovar fortuna. Alla morte di Matamore, uno degli attori, il barone Sigognac lo sostituisce. Il suo personaggio sarà un cavaliere gradasso e un po’ vigliacco: Capitan Fracassa.

The Baron of Sigognac lives on his family's estate in a castle nearing total collapse with only a manservant to attend to him, with barely enough money to afford the most meager of meals. A theatrical troupe takes refuge from a storm at his castle, and he meets Isabelle, one of the actors in the troupe. Impulsively, the baron leaves with the troupe and assumes the identity of Captain Fracasse, becoming an actor in the group, in order to spend time with Isabelle. When Isabelle draws the attention of a cruel nobleman, the baron must fight a duel for her honor.

This book, one of the 1001 Children's Books, is long-winded and filled with fainting females and noblemen who are given to believe they can do whatever they want, even kill, lesser-born folk.

The title of the book is Captain Fracasse and the author is Théophile Gautier.

Le masque, la cape, l'épée
Le style riche et très descriptif de Théophile Gautier délivre des tableaux caravagesques au lieu de descriptions; le romantisme qui habite les protagonistes devient structure du récit et entraîne le lecteur dans une narration très articulée; le contexte historique ajoute une touche de réalisme sans éclipser le “jeu” des personnages, mais au contraire en soulignant leur côté héroïque. Sans trop se disperser, on est devant, en absolu, au meilleur livre de cape et épée de tous les temps!

Le Capitaine Fracasse est un roman cape et d'épée basé sur Le Roman comique de Scarron (1651-1657. Le result est un excellent roman de jeunesse qui est sans intéret pour le public adult.

C’est un livre à la fois génial et décevant.

Le style est époustouflant. Le premier chapitre est à mourir de rire, l’une des meilleures choses que j’ai lues de ma vie. Il utilise même le mot « batraciens ». Qui fait ça ?

Malheureusement j’ai cru que la suite du livre serait de même, mais ce n’était pas le cas. L’humour est ensuite plus épars, comme si l’auteur avait tout donné au premier chapitre. Cela dit c’est très très bien écrit, il y a un tas de phrases très bien pensées dans ce livre. Par exemple page 97 en parlant du rire : « [...] l’apanage des dieux immortels et bienheureux qui rient olympiennement tout leur soul pendant les loisirs de l’éternité »
Ou encore page 150 : « il est des bonnes volontés qui sautent d’elles-mêmes entre les bras des ravisseurs »
Je mets ce livre en deuxième position des livres les mieux écrits de la littérature française, après Les liaisons dangereuses, indétrônable.

La fin du livre est excessivement longue. Il n’y avait pas besoin d’écrire encore cent pages de plus. Le problème de ce livre est qu’une seule intrigue y est principalement déroulée (même si des petites aventures sans conséquence, amenées par les personnages secondaires, sont aussi présentes), là encore ce n’est pas ce à quoi je m’attendais. Le dernier rebondissement était celui de trop pour moi. Mais en même temps c’est le moment où le dernier personnage y est introduit, personnage doté d’un charisme à tomber par terre. Il a un peu sauvé la fin du livre pour moi. Il faudra aussi que je me souvienne du personnage de Chiquita, intéressant et énigmatique.

Pour finir, je lis ici et là que c’est un livre pour la jeunesse. Mais je ne suis pas d’accord. On m’a demandé de le lire en 4e, ce que je n’ai pas fait étant donné la LOURDEUR EXTRÊME de l’écriture. Il y a des livres légers faciles à lire, ce n’est pas le cas de celui-ci. Il est rempli. de. mots. Il a fallu attendre quinze ans pour que je sois en état de le lire.
Donc merci beaucoup ma prof de français car malgré toutes mes plaintes c’est tout de même une bonne lecture. D’ailleurs elle nous a aussi fait lire Différentes saisons de Stephen King, donc elle nous voulait vraiment du bien c’est sûr !

Ce n'est pas un roman parfait, mais il a des aspects qui m'ont fasciné.

Le langage soutenu employé dans le récit par les pires criminels et tricheurs est très drôle, il me rappelle des romans de Jack Vance, particuliérement "Cugel l'Astucieux".

Il y a beaucoup de références classiques, souvent J'ai dû les rechercher dans Wikipédia.

Ce qui est aussi intéressant c'est la figure de ce jeune homme proie de la pauvreté et la tristesse, qui gaspille sa jeunesse vivant presque isolé dans la maison délabrée de ses ancétres, et qui retrouve son élan par la inopinée apparitión d'une troupe théâtrale.

Je perçois aussi de la sympathie pour les animaux, par exemple dans cet extrait anti-cartésien prés de la fin du récit:

Il ne pensait point que les animaux fussent de pures machines, et il accordait aux bêtes une âme de nature inférieure à l’âme des hommes, mais capable cependant d’intelligence et de sentiment.

It was quite enjoyable reading. It this book there is anything one can wish to find in such book: adventures, chevalier sans peur et sans reproche, damsel in distress, sword fightings and happy happy end.
But there are a lot of similarities to another book, Scaramouche by Rafael Sabatini. Both Sigongiac and Andre Moreau are poor, both enter buskers' crew. Both in same circumstances have to become an actor, not an average actor but comedian. Both heroes are in love with pretty actress who is a love interest of a noble lord.
See? Similar stories. Well, Gautier was the first, but still, I myself prefer Scaramouche story.
Sigongiac as a hero is weak and too melancholic for my taste.

Più che un'esperienza di lettura (avevo nove anni), fu un lungo viaggio sentimentale.
Finì che rubai il volume dalla libreria di mio nonno, perché non sopportavo fisicamente l'idea di dovermi separare da lui.
Per i successivi dieci anni, con cadenza bimestrale, ho continuato a sfogliarlo, sino ad anticiparne tutte le battute.
E' anche così che ho capito che i libri al tuo fianco durano senz'altro più degli uomini (e ti stancano meno).

Che belli i libri che ti capitano in mano per caso. 𝘐𝘭 𝘊𝘢𝘱𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘯 𝘍𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘢, per me, è stato proprio uno di questi. Edizione del ’55, appartenuto a mia nonna o a un mio prozio, me lo sono ritrovata davanti mentre sistemavo delle cose in casa e, senza pensarci due volte, l’ho acchiappato per leggerlo.

Nel mio caso è stata una lettura molto improntata sull’effetto nostalgia. Da ragazzina adoravo i romanzi d’avventura, soprattutto quelli di cappa e di spada, quindi a leggere delle vicende del barone di Sigognac non ho potuto che sentirmi trascinata indietro; è stato bello seguirlo nel suo viaggio coi teatranti, nonché mi ha appassionato la storia d’amore con l’attrice Isabella e le continue lotte col duca di Vallombrosa. Sigognac è proprio uno di quei protagonisti che da ragazzina avrei amato a dismisura, il cavaliere ombroso e guidato dall’onore che nulla teme, e di cui ora ho trovato molto piacevole la caratterizzazione. Altro personaggio che mi è piaciuto molto è Chiquita, piccola, svelta e leale, che ha in sé un potenziale incredibile. C’è da dire, comunque, che nel complesso l’intreccio è risultato ai miei occhi un po’ prevedibile, almeno nei suoi snodi principali, ma ciò non ha diminuito la bellezza dell’opera.

Ciò che mi ha meno entusiasmata, in realtà, è stato lo stile scrittura – e la traduzione, ma qui è colpa della mia edizione decisamente troppo vecchia –, che ho avvertito abbastanza pesante e rigido, soprattutto mettendolo a confronto con altri Ottocenteschi. Certo è che, alla fine, è una questione di gusti e sensibilità, quindi non ci ho dato troppo peso.

In conclusione, bello, per quanto senta la sua età. Una lettura di cui avevo proprio bisogno.

I found it impossible not to see the parallel with Scaramouche and to unwillingly compare the two swashbuckling novels at the beginning of the book. However I soon forgot that to feel completely immersed in this story with some great characters. The end was predictable, but I wasn't exactly expecting any plot twists. Overall a rather nice novel from an author I had been meaning to read for some time.

Reprend le roman comique version roman de cape et d'épée du 19ème. Hyper divertissant, le style de Gautier fonctionne très bien avec ce type de récit et le discours méta littéraire est très marrant (bourré de références)

Romanzo di formazione semplicemente meraviglioso, un'avventura indietro nel tempo che ci trasporta con leggerezza. Il capitan Fracassa è il riscatto della fedeltà a se stessi, è il coraggio di uscire dalla propria zona di confort quando ne siamo insoddisfatti ed è un invito a seguire l'inaspettando restando sempre fedeli a ciò che siamo.
Il viaggio non è solo per il mondo ma è anche dentro il teatro, con un'allegra combriccola che ci insegna qualcosa sulla vita e sulla precarietà dell'esistenza.
Théophile Gautier ha uno stile limpido che talvolta induce il lettore a interrompersi solo per pregustare il suono di quelle frasi, quelle parole inusuali e sconosciute appartenute a un altro tempo. Certe volte ci si arresta anche solo per sospirare a quella scrittura così audace e piena di meraviglia che accompagna senza essere mai invadente, senza interrompere mai la magia della lettura.
Lo consiglierei senz'altro, è un libro che fa sognare, e che ci porta a vivere l'avventura del lasciarsi andare.

Un romanzo d'appendice classico. I personaggi rappresentano maschere ben definite: l'ingenua, la civetta, lo spasimante, il cattivo e così via. Sopra a ogni cosa è esaltata la virtù, sia essa la purezza di una giovane o la nobiltà d'animo e di natali del protagonista, gli atti di generosità ricevono sempre una ricompensa, i malvagi trovano ravvedimento. Il romanzo è ricco, anzi direi sovraccarico, di descrizioni: di ogni personaggio viene minuziosamente descritto il vestiario, di ogni ambiente l'arredamente e gli addobbi, di ogni luogo l'aspetto e la natura. Un romanzo che riporta indietro nel tempo, a tratti divertente e romantico, a tratti un po' pesante e pedante.

Storia avvincente, bei personaggi, ma una scrittura troppo descrittiva. Non c’è spazio per la fantasia del lettore. Paesaggi, ambienti interni, abbigliamenti, tutto è soggetto a pagine e pagine di minuziosi rapporti. Ed è un peccato, perché le idee non mancano e quando infine l’autore si dedica all’azione, il romanzo non manca di mordente. Nel complesso il libro mi è piaciuto, ma con uno stile più asciutto il giudizio sarebbe stato ben diverso.

This book is an eye-opener. I read it on the recommendation of Helene who had read it in her native language. I read the English translation. Many sword fights....twists and turns......a combination of Canterbury Tales by Chaucer....stories by Dumas....Victor Hugo and others who are more well known and recognized....I do recommend that you find it and read it.I had to get a loaner from Holyoke Community College from the Leominster Public Library...It's a good story...Please read it.

Delizioso, perfetto!
Non ho mai letto un romanzo d'avventura così romantico, poetico e allo stesso tempo raffinato ed elegante! Gautier mi conferma di essere uno scrittore impareggiabile, nonché dotato di una cultura smisurata: qui sono innumerevoli i riferimenti alla mitologia classica e alla Commedia dell'Arte, che evidentemente l'autore conosceva assai bene. Chapeau!

Un grand roman de capes et d' épées, qui mêle comédie et chevalerie avec bonheur. Un peu dur de se faire au style au début (ça fleure bon son XIXe siècle), on finit par se faire attraper et on suit avec intérêts les tribulations du jeune marquis de Sigognac.
