There was a lot of information there and medical books are always a bit slower for me, but this one was excellent. I'm both encouraged and challenged at the thought of really overhauling my diet and routine to live healthier. I know now is the time because like they say it doesn't get easier.
The diagrams really helped reenforce the material since I'm a visual person. I would highly recommend.
Intermittent fasting is nothing new, it's been around since the beginning of time. What if we've taken all the control away from our body to function as it should? Fasting and limiting intake of when we eat allows our body to use stored fats, heal the damaged cells and tissues of our body and work like an engine. We are treating our bodies like we are constantly revving our engines and not allowing it to run. I've been trying fasting for a few weeks now and have found myself past the initially weight drop plateau and getting down to lean mass. I feel great and still eat great, I just don't eat all the time now and let my body do what it was meant to do.
Decent and broad overview of intermittent fasting. This book is an easy and quick read, well adapted scientific content for lay public. However, I personally lacked some more scientific content, although there was a good attempt to briefly introduce all the various biochemical pathways involved. On the bright side the author has used a good plethora of references (which could've been referenced in the text better), but some of them seemed a bit forced and not detailed. Initially I was planning to give 4 stars until I read a brief summary of why Burzynski was the very best scientist, who found the cure for all cancers, and was forced by the Bad Pharma and FDA to shut up and forget the cure. I understand the author may have a different belief on that matter, but a quick look on Google suggest that Burzynski magical cure for cancer was dubious with many clinical trials missing (e.g. no phase III clinical trials have been done) or underreported. After reading this, suddenly I became even more suspicious of the other claims the author is trying to persuade.
At the moment I have already started intermittent fasting a week ago, and I am already seeing the results, so it would've been interesting to see a clear and rational synthesis of knowledge on intermittent fasting. Despite a few drawbacks, this book offers a decent and easy to read and concise summary on cellular processes affected by intermittent fasting, and offers a few plans how to implement it.
This certainly is an overview on the science behind intermittent fasting. By reading through this you'll understand far more regarding the human body response to intermittent fasting, and how this is linked to the science behind glucose tolerance, insulin resistance, diabetes, fat loss, etc. The research is excellent and not simply one doctor's opinions. Many research studies are spoken about in many different facets.
I have two minor dings. Firstly... there is certainly some limited research that is against the premise of intermittent fasting. It would be good of the author chose to list them out and address these claims. He seemed to have ignored it.
Lastly - the overall tone of the author is sometimes childish and unprofessional... as if he's speaking to a small room of his friends instead of authoring a scientific overview book. Dozens of rhetorical questions, exclamation points, sarcasm, etc. This might be more bothersome to me than it would be to you. But I expect a book to sound like a book, and a speech to sound like a speech. Below are tiny examples.
Note the sarcasm: "I wonder how much science and research they used to back up that claim? How about none." What's with the exclamation points and all caps?? "[Starvation mode] actually occurs 72-96 hours after a meal. That is three to four days after a meal, not a few hours! What was interesting is that your metabolic rate is actually INCREASED short term after fasting."
Nonetheless - the book is excellent and a short Kindle read. You'll walk away a believer, and may make minor lifestyle changes after completing.
I didn't like the fact that in text he refers to some study just by journal name, and even though there's a bunch of references at the end of the book, I'd rather see them properly referred in the text.
Also, few times I did fact checking it seems his facts were wrong. Like insisting that cancer cells feed on sugar only, rven though he cites '80%', later in the book he still keeps insisting otherwise. Quick Google says nope, they perfectly fine eat a bunch of things.
Then some dr that found cancer cure but big pharma crushed him. Google says there's no peer reviewed studies that show this method works, whilst Michael casually mentions that there are. Again, lack of proper citations/references makes fact checking hard and one loses the inspiration and author loses credibility.
There's a bunch of general attitude against big pharma which I usually find present in quackery :/
My impression is that even though the author combined some scientifically proven things, he bunched them with stuff under current research including 'needs further research, even though it's promising', and with stuff that is scientifically proven different than he claims, and then, yeah, you just can't take this as reliable source of information.
I enjoyed reading Michael's book, and came out more informed and motivated. Being a guide to athletes he has observed and tried these techniques. He also follows the routines he has written about. Therefore, one doesn't have to look far for any endorsement or reviews. As it is, the reviews here testify to so many people moved and touched by his insight and suggestions. If you take up this book, don't be put off by Latin names and descriptions of processes in the human body. You will be rewarded in the last chapter how to go about doing intermittent fasting. I have been inspired and chalked out a program for myself and on it for a week. Maybe, early but I feel good but I am looking forward to much more happening to my body. I feel confident and recommend to all who care about health, managing fearsome diseases and gracefully aging.
Very informative, have been IF for two days and so far so good. I am following the rules and found 16:8 as he suggests is pretty easy so far. I suggest everyone or anyone who wants to stArt IF read this first.

Really got me thinking about my health and easily motivated me to begin skipping breakfast. I'm trying to lose weight/fat and hopefully this will enhance my low carb plan. Beyond that though and most importantly, all the health benefits derived from this simple change make it an absolute no brainer for me. I'm excited, motivated and very hopeful. This book is a keeper, will definitely read again to soak it all in.
Explained the value of the Intermittent fasting Protocol
This is a good book easy to read easy to follow And will definitely give people considering an IF diet Some good information to make judgments. For me it spent a little too much time selling the benefits Of this approach rather than The how to of intermittent fasting. I would have like to have seen More about how you can tell when you're in ketosis what the signs and or.test to make sure.
Ja sāk dzīvē kaut ko jaunu, tad tikai uz zinātniskiem pamatiem :) Daudz ko jau zināju, tomēr dažas lietas palīdzēja šo to saprast labāk.
I've been doing IF for several years and read everything I can get my hands on. There were many new studies mentioned in this book. I, myself, prefer to fast 20 to 24 hours daily. I feel so much better than when I eat more than one meal a day. This is definitely a book to read and digest.
I didn't get much from this book. It is not geared to all age groups and the author focused more on himself than I would have liked. There are other books on the subject that are better grounded in current evidence. I found Dr. Fung's complete guide to fasting much more informative and useful.
Good book on fasting. gives you alot of information on Interminttent fasting from the effects of hormons and what happens at a cellular level. book also provides various plans that one can implement which is great. You realise that that we dont have to eat as much as we have been told to eat. Great help for me who plans to go down this life path of optimum health.
Loved this book. I’ve already been IF since the beginning of the year and seeing breakthrough in my health after many years. This book gives lots of scientific evidence for doing so along with advice for how to get started. If you want to jumpstart your health this is a must read.
The information in this book is outstanding. But, Michael, please find an editor who can correct the grammar, word choice, noun/verb agreement, and punctuation errors. "Indirect relationship" is used when "inverse relationship" is meant, "affect" is used instead of "effect," and research studies are reported "out of" journals rather than "by" them. Again, the information is outstanding, but the writing needs work.
While the author kept telling you about things he was going to reveal to you in next book, all-in-all, this book is really good at explaining the scientific data and and health benefits of Intermittent Fasting. He is very through and utilizes scientific data to back up his claims. He also offers you strategies and different types IF that offer the best results.
Great book if you are interested in your health. Thoroughly recommend it.
A very different approach to the age old problem of maintaining a healthy weight. Excellent read very interesting especially in relation to the prevention of common illnesses.
This might be a good introduction for those just starting Intermittent Fasting as the information here is basic. The author does do a good job explaining the science in understandable terms.
Very helpful knowledge to gain if you care about your health
I found this to be a good foundational book. Very detailed and helpful to know when considering the various choices to be made in altering your eating habits for better health and weight control.
The book contains concise and yet useful research based information on fasting. A highly motivating book for fasting beginners. As an intermittent faster, I recommend it.
A lot of science...but way better than just hype on the how and why this method works. Highly recommended to those seeking to improve overall health and maintain healthy brain/memory function into their senior years.
Fairly easy to read, not quite as technical as some of the other books I've read on the subject. Worth the time, in my opinion, to pick up a few different points of view on the subject.
I recommend this book to everyone who is needing to increase their health. Basically clear information on IM. Excellent starting point for those looking to lose weight.
No non-sense narrative scientific explanation of the benefits of IF. Common-sense approach to avoiding cancer and other diseases. Also enjoyed the schedules provided which are not in most IF books. Read and get healthy!
Excellent material and guide to implement intermittent fasting. Gives fairly good background of benefits. Pleasantly surprised to see it focus on not only diabetes and heart but cancer and stress too.
The book literally is what the name is! Scientific basis of intermittent fasting through various articles published in journals and research papers, it was an excellent book! Non-medicos can also read the book if at all they're interested. It's written in a very lucid and enjoyable way.
Love the way book is been compiled. Giving each ailment its own chapter. Very simple language. Any layman can understand. Waiting for your next book on training. Thank you so much.
This book gives great information on fasting. I am older and going thru some health problems. I need to loss weight and become healthier. I am also ready to change my way of eating. This book helped me get thru the ruff patches.
Very interesting book. I read this as a follow on from The Fast Diet and it reinforces and adds more to the idea of fasting and the benefits of it. Good read for anyone considering it.
