This book was first published in 2015. Since then, my debut novel has undergone a complete makeover, inside and out! The story described as “refreshingly unique” by readers has been kicked up a notch with the addition of a third point of view, a fresh edit, along with a few other twists and turns.
My idea was to put the experience that I've gained into these adjustments, so that my readers could enjoy Virgil and Rose's rollercoaster journey even more while discovering the star-crossed lovers' ancient Irish legend.

This is a continuous a second-chance love story about fate, secrets, and power, so make sure to follow the reading order.
This book was a refreshingly unique and captivating paranormal romance. Once upon a time, Deirdre (a sorceress/witch) required a calligrapher/scribe monk's assistance with writing a book of life and medicine which eventually became known as the "Black Angel Book." Morgann (the monk) falls in love with Deirdre, but their love is forbidden on many levels. The book attracts the attention of evil individuals believing that it contains the secret to immortality and the lovers are pulled apart--- but not before Deirdre has her say by weaving a spell that allows her beloved to be reincarnated over and over, in search of her reincarnated spirit.
Flash forward to present day, and we meet our main character Rose who was raised in France but has family in the northeastern US. Rose had her heart ripped out by her recent boyfriend and visits her relatives in Provincetown (a liberal, artistic, inclusive coastal town) for her 22nd summer. There, she enjoys time with her American family, works in their restaurant, and is eventually encouraged to enroll in a calligraphy class by her cousin's girlfriend Tiny.
The calligraphy class introduces an interesting cast of characters including the otherworldly attractive but arrogant Nathan, several female friends who follow Nathan like a lost puppy, Big Jim the gigolo (who has some pretty hilarious manscaping tips), and Virgil. Rose and Virgil have extremely strong chemistry that draws them to each other like magnets. Once Virgil realizes who Rose is, will he be able to take next the steps?
I loved watching Rose blossom from a heartbroken, depressed, downtrodden character to one that took control of her life and made the best of things. Watching her confidence grow (using both her French and American heritage) was rewarding as was learning more about each character's backstory. The historic parallels and artistic intricacies of the calligraphy helped to enrich the story.
The beginning of the story was a bit slow, but things start to snowball quickly enough and a captivating and engrossing story soon emerges. Unfortunately the book does end on a cliffhanger. The good news is that book 2 is already available and can be read on Kindle Unlimited like its predecessor.
I was sent an Ecopy by the author in exchange for an honest review.
Rose is staying in Provincetown, MA with her American family leaving France behind to try and get over a terrible breakup. A breakup that has led her to harming herself just to be sure that she can still feel even if that feeling is pain. While on P-Town Rose enlists in Calligraphy classes it is there where she falls for one of her teachers. Morgann's soul has been jumping from body to body since Deidre was killed and she cast a spell where their souls will travel until they find each other and Morgann thinks he has finally found Deidre; there is only one catch the spell Deidre left her clueless to who she really is and he must find a way to trigger her memory.
I really enjoyed this story! I felt myself clicking with all the quickly characters especially the man carrying Morgann's soul, as I read through the book I just wanted to read more and more of him. Rose goes through some great character development and I love to see how she went from being hurt to really enjoying her vacation. The novel did seem a little too slow in the beginning because the first half of the book is mostly getting to know both main characters, but once I got to the middle I couldn't put it down, I just kept wanting more and more! Hope hit me with several twist I was not expecting and I can’t wait to see where the story goes after some major decisions were made. Overall I was able to get past the slow start and really did enjoy this book and one other thing I need more of Virgil please, you'll know who he is when you read the book.
I have read many paranormal books, but never one quite like this. Morgann is a monk, who has been assigned to help Deirdre write a book of medicine. Right from the start he is drawn to her, he knows she is the one for him. But he has made a solemn oath to abstinence and the teachings of God, he should resist her. But he can’t. He loves her. In the eight century, breaking your vow of celibacy was unheard of, not to mention carrying on with a woman who people deemed as a witch, so unfortunately, they are hunted down, not only for what they have done, but also for this book that was eventually called, “Black Angel book.” People believed it had a power of immortality.
So they killed Deidre and left Morgann to die. However, they were right in thinking Deirdre was witch, because she most definitely was and before her death, she cast a spell so their souls would reunite, even though their human forms would die. .
What a powerful book. I have never read something that was so engaging, gripping and absolutely fantastic. What a beautiful fantasy, to know the one you loved you would share eternity with. This book gave me that ‘ah’ feeling, that satisfied smile that tells you this was a great book.
“I am a soul that gained awareness of its existence; a wandering soul inhabiting various bodies throughout their mortal life.A soul longing to be reunited with its soulmate.”
“I am no longer Morgann. She is no longer Deidre. I love her. She’s my life. I am going to find her. She’ll be mine, once again.”
I am a big, big paranormal romance fan, so when I read the synopsis for this book, I just knew I had to check it out. And let me tell you, Twice Upon a Time is a really great debut novel. It pulls you in from the very first page, and has you wanting to know more. I found the story-line to be unique and captivating. The characters were interesting and had me wanting to know more about them. I was anxious to see if Morgann and Deidre’s souls were ever going to be reunited. I loved being in the present with Morgann and Deidre or as they are now called Virgil and Rose. I was on pins and needles, waiting to see if Rose’s soul was ever going to recognize Virgil for who he truly was.
Overall, I thought that Twice Upon a Time was a good read. I think it’s a great debut novel and that this series has a ton of potential. This story has lots of great mystery and romance. I will warn you that it does end on a bit of a cliffhanger and it’s a good one. I for one can not wait to get my hands on the next book and see what lies in store for these characters next.
*I was provided an ARC copy of this book, in exchange for an honest review*
A solid 3.5 story for me. I absolutely love PNR. This gave the added bonus of two lovers souls wandering through time, being reincarnated over and over until they find each other again. The twist here is that the hero's soul maintains the knowledge of their endless love and the fact that he is trying to find 'the one', and the heroine doesn't remember anything. Virgil and Rose are Morgann, the Monk and Deidre the Healer from centuries past. Will Virgil be able to convince Rose of their love or will he even doubt the connection enough to push her away? There's a love triangle and a few twists along the way. Don't forget the bad guys trying to derail their reunion as well. They are trying to find the book of Kells that Morgann & Deidre wrote together. There were a lot of things happening in this book and an over-abundance of detail, in my opinion. This does happen a lot in the first book of a series to help set up the new world you're reading about. This give me hope that the next one in this series will be even better.
Not a book I would normally read, but so glad I did. This book was great. It kept me wanting to finish reading it. I can't wait to read the rest of the series.
In the 8th century, an Irish monk/calligrapher named Morgann did the forbidden act of falling in love and going against his pledge of celibacy. But he didn’t just fall in love with any one. He fell in love with a witch. Deirdre, the witch in question, fell in love with Morgann too, and together they worked on a book of spells that was coveted by the very people who tried to kill them. But before their demise, Deirdre placed a curse on them that would allow their souls to travel across time, occupying different bodies in order to meet each other again one day. True soul mates. Now in the present time, Virgil, the host body for Morgann’s soul, remembers his past life and is in desperate need to find his soul mate so they can finish the book which their past selves couldn’t. But he is aware that the host for Deirdre may not remember her past with him, so he has to find her and push her into remembering or their love may be lost forever.
Rose, a Parisian college graduate comes to Provincetown, Massachusetts to visit her American family and to also get away from a very bad breakup. She had been depressed for a year, practically a zombie, and only found some sort of rush for life when she cut her wrist. Although vacationing with her favorite cousins and aunt seemed like fun, she was afraid that nothing would get her out of her funk. That is until she decided to take a calligraphy class and meet the very tall and awkwardly handsome Virgil. After spending time with him, a fire is ignited inside of her that she has never felt before, and her whole body desires him. She has no explanation for why she wants him so bad, but when Virgil feels the same way about her, he realizes that she must be his soul mate, the host body of Deirdre. Not wanting to rush things, Virgil decides to take things slow and gradually get to know Rose instead of forcing them together because of Morgann and Deirdre. But can he find the courage to tell Rose the truth about them? And if he does, will Rose stick around and believe him about why they are attracted to each other, or will she find the whole thing nuts?
Twice Upon A Time is a true roller coaster ride. Some parts exciting, some parts uncomfortable, but altogether a rush to read. I will say that it took me a while to get into the main plot of the story, because the first half or so is about Rose in Provincetown and then about Rose and Virgil meeting and getting to know each other. I’m not saying that it was necessarily a bad thing, but it kind of frustrated me to know that the real nitty-gritty stuff happened more than midway through. It made me wonder what took so long to get there. Maybe that’s just me since I’m the type of person who likes to know what’s going on before the halfway mark (well except if I’m reading a mystery/suspense/horror), especially in a book about soul mates that triggers romance. I don’t like waiting long before I know that the characters are going to be together. And I don’t like waiting long to find out that my characters are different than they appear (once again except in mystery/horror/suspense). I shouldn’t have to read more than half the book to find out that a character I once thought shy and awkward is actually a killer with a cause…in a plot I would consider a romance! Even though it was a nice and exciting twist that added more depth to the plot, it was a mind blow because there were no innuendos that led up to that crazy character development, and it was kind of just thrown at me. It made me sit up and read it over again, hoping I didn’t read the words wrong. But none of that turned me away from the book. There were a lot of surprises within the plot and between the characters that kept me on edge and made reading enjoyable. I give Twice Upon A Time 4 fangs! I recommend it to the romantics out there who believe in the power of love, reincarnation, and the existence of soul mates.

Once upon a time, centuries ago, a monk named Morgann and a witch named Deidre crafted the Black Angel Book — a book so powerful, others would kill for it. Before they died, Deidre cast a spell to ensure they would find one another once again… in another lifetime.
Twice upon a time, their souls are in the bodies of Virgil, a calligrapher, and Rose, who on summer vacation, takes his calligraphy class. Rose is depressed from a break-up and ready for a summer fling.
Virgil is well aware of who he is and believes Rose may be his Deidre. He is dying to tell her but he has to be patient — like he is with calligraphy — in order to not scare her away. He also has to endure Rose’s games and her attempts to make him jealous. But how can he convince her when she doesn’t believe in fate? And what if he’s wrong? Maybe Rose isn’t his Deidre, after all…
I absolutely love how this novel is based on an urban legend that the author created herself! (I think; I couldn’t find an urban legend about a monk and a witch and a coveted book anywhere online.) I was intrigued by the star-crossed lovers theme and was eager to turn the pages to see how this story would play out.
This novel was more of a new adult, mythology romance than a paranormal romance or urban fantasy. I say this because Rose isn’t aware of her past nor her destiny and the setting is in Massachusetts which is otherwise ordinary. There are no roaming supernatural creatures, etc., and with the exception of the chapters told through Virgil’s POV, this story reads as a contemporary romance. Of course, the reader knows otherwise because of Virgil.
4.5 mystifying stars!!! Hooked from page one!! I couldn’t put it down!
This book will take you on a unique and powerful journey!! I don’t usually read paranormal books, but something about the blurb caught me and I had to read it!! I loved the whole idea of the book about souls that need to reconnect and/or be together. It really hit me in the heart!! The love that Deirdre and Morgann had for each was compelling and so beautifully written. I mean you could feel the torment dripping from the pages!! I don’t want to give too much away regarding the book, but I will say that I fell in love with this book and I’m a huge fan of Hope’s!!

Okay so how to put into words how this book made me feel. I guess that is a little “WTF just happened?” kind of ending. This is not a happily eve after kind of book. But man was it weird too, in an interesting kind of way. This book is about a book and a urban ledged. It dose have you puzzled as you read. It is more like what world have happened in real life if a witch had cast this spell. It would not be as simple as telling her who she was to Virgil.
Vigil has had to live reincarnated over and over, while he tries to find his lost love. And as atypical male he has had a hard time with it over and over. But maybe this time he may have found he in Rose. But he seems to keep screwing it up. He thinks it should be simple. But when has anything in life ever been that simple. And while he tries to figure it out a new guy comes into the picture. And he may very well have lost his chance if only he can figure out what to do. But when he pushes her away will he ever be able to get her back. I have to read the next book now. I have to find out how it ends.
Now before I ruin this for you I will leave off here. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did. If you do like this book, please consider leaving a review. The Authors really like it when you do; they value your opinions too.
This debut novel from Hope Irving has characters from the 8th Century, as well as contemporary ones. There are a few flashbacks from Morgann, but mainly it is done as Virgil thinking, or occasionally writing, about things.
There is a lot happening in this book, and yet paradoxically, nothing much seems to happen either. Rose is an unhappy character when we first meet as she has broken up with her first long-term boyfriend/relationship and has taken to cutting herself. Virgil is described as a sexy-ugly, nearly 7-foot giant. Unfortunately, because of the constant references to him being awkward and ugly, I kept on seeing Quasimodo in my mind!
An interesting storyline that doesn't answer much, but instead leads you to the next book.
* I received this book from Kiss Off Book Tours in return for a fair and honest review. *
A book that is realised on my favourite day of the year has to be a good start. This book was creative and original. I love when a book teaches me something... A random fact I probably should have already know especially supposing I was born in the 80's.... The Brat pack made up of the cast members from 1980's films such as breakfast club and St. Elmo's fire. Quite a lot of really good actors are part of this group. (I don't do spoilers therefore I will not be relating this fact to the book). I recommend this good to anyone who likes an alternative story with a creative mind. Look forward to reading the next book.

I don't typically read paranormal stuff but I do like romance and it takes place on Cape Cod with references to my home town of Provincetown. I asked the author for an ARC in trade for an honest review. The first chapter was a lot of info- the story rolled out nicely after that. By the end I was totally hooked. I couldn't put it down. I neglected both sleep and a shower. I'm in love with multiple characters and my mind can't stop imagining what's next for them. I think this could be a great series. Its 50 shades without the S&M and I want more! I loved it!
This is the first paranormal romance I have ever read and I really enjoyed it because anything can happen in the paranormal. The plot twists were never what I expected and I found myself unable to put the book down. At the end of each chapter I had to turn the page to see what would happen next. The romance between two main characters is intriguing because they are so overwhelmed by each other that they can't express themselves. The author describes their innermost thoughts. I found hoping they would finally get it all out on the table and be together. The suspense was great.
Different. Paranormal, but it didn't 'feel' paranormal! This book is so unique for a paranormal read. I could relate to the characters. I could picture them being one of my friends or at least, someone that I know. I loved this book!! It was real, with characters that have flaws. Recommended to anyone who enjoys a second-chance romance, within an original story.
First, I would like to thank the author for gifting me this book through netgalley. I enjoyed this book very much. The characters are well developed and written. The storyline is well done. I loved Virgil and would like to know even more about him. Rose grew as a character throughout the story, but I felt she didn't listen. I cannot wait to read more from Hope Irving.
If you like witches and the sort...this book is for you! Not a book I’d usually buy myself as an everyday read. But...I’d definitely read more books by this author!! Well worth the time and money to get and read this book!
Morgann has been searching for his lost love since the 9th century. By a spell, Deidre has linked the souls of her and Morgann. Morgann knows about this, Deidre has forgotten that. In the 21st century, Morgann's soul is in the body of Virgil, a calligraphist. While offering a summer class, he meets Rose and he is sure she has Deidre's soul. Very carefully he seeks rapprochement. Rose has been impressed with Virgil from the start, even though he's not her type at all. She does not trust men after her 3-year relationship was broken and she finds out that he has been cheating on her all along. But she cannot ignore her feelings for Virgil. When he is close, her body reacts strongly to him but she does not dare to act, afraid of rejection.
The story has a slow build but is not disturbing. Virgil has knowledge that Rose doesn't have and he doesn't know how to bring it. Rose is a timid young woman who is not guided by chance but makes informed choices. Is she open to the legend of Deidre and Morgann and does she accept her fate?
Everything that happens around Rose and Virgil creates a distance between the two, leading to a romance between Rose and Bruce. Despite that, Rose continues to have strong lusts for Virgil. Will there be a time when Rose will choose Virgil?
The story runs through the legend of Deidre and Morgann who wrote the black angel book together. In the 9th century, a cult tried to get hold of this book and killed Deidre for it. The followers of this cult are still active in the 21st. You will find short correspondences between members in the book. It gives an extra dimension to the story when you try to find out who the abbreviations belong to. Who is Master 1-F / SAD? And what is their purpose?
Thank you Hope Irving for providing a free copy of this book. This review is voluntarily given by me
This is the first paranormal book I've read. While I've come to the conclusion that I'm not a huge fan of the genre, this book itself was done well. The character development was good, the story development was good. Deirdre and Morgann had quite the chemistry. There were parts that were hard for me to read because of things going on in my personal life, but relating to a book is something that makes it a good book. There were some "holy cow" moments and some "awww" moments. All in all, the book was well written and a 4 star book. If you like paranormal books, you'll like this one.
It took me awhile to get into it and understand it all. After that it is a good read. It is exciting, suspenseful, intriguing and so much more. I received a review copy and voluntarily review it.
This book was very different from anything I've read. It's paranormal, but almost with a mythological twist to it. I especially loved the character development with Rose. She went from this "woe is me" girl to a "heck yes I'm amazing" take charge woman. I've found a new paranormal author, and cannot wait to read what she has in store for her readers!
Twice Upon a Time by Hope Irving is the first instalment in the Black Angel Book series. It is the story of the witch Deidre, who, being in love with the calligrapher monk Morgann, casts a spell to reunite their souls in the future. However, while Morgann's hosts remember everything, Deidre's do not.
We later learn that the tale of Deidre and Morgann is believed to be legend, especially amongst calligraphers.
The opening chapter though informative is narrated in a casual manner, not from a once-upon-a-time monk; it wasn't light either. Afterwards, the narration shifts between Rose and the man carrying Morgann's time-travelling soul.
I liked how Hope Irving kept the second narrator's identity a mystery (obviously I'm doing the same).
The idea that Morgann's current form may or may not appeal to Rose or Deidre is interesting and leaves room for possible problems.
"Somehow my soul remembers it all, hers doesn't. But how will she remember who she was, who we were? Will seeing me be enough? Will I need to trigger her memory? Will she accept me as I am now?"
Twice Upon a Time sets the backdrop for the upcoming books in the series. There is a lot of action, although not much with regards to bringing Deidre's and Morgann's souls back together.
Rose is an ordinary girl, whose heart has been badly broken in previous relationship. Here, she comes to spend the summer with her American side of the family. She deeply seeks to get her mind off the previous relationship and the man who broke her, G.
Rose is also a cutter and I particularly liked how Irving maintained this trait throughout the novel, even when Rose was happy, giving a realistic side to a paranormal story.
"Gifted Deirdre cast the spell that enabled our souls to eventually be reunited. She couldn't bear for us to be apart, and neither could I."
I did not enjoy the too much drinking part of the novel; I felt it was overdone. But that's just me.
Having been in the search for Deirdre's soul for-ever, Morgann or his host seems unable to comprehend that he may have found her, putting him off balance, and making him think irrationally. I liked that. Although, I felt sometimes he was way too irrational (but that's the norm in relationships now, especially when you make assumptions).
Getting viewpoints of the two protagonists allows the reader to guess at events and see beyond what is going. There were parts when I was biting my nails with worry and others when I was telling off the characters or just going on "No. No. Nooooo!" (So you can probably say it's a bit of an interactive novel.)
"She had faith in me, so I have no choice but to have faith in me, too."
Twice Upon a Time is filled with active, fun, interesting and recurring characters, giving the novel a realistic side. The group barely sleeps; however, they do give Rose a breather, allowing her to get her mind off G. often.
Falling under the romance and new adult genres, the novel includes more than just kissing. In addition, Rose's desires are awakened all of sudden and need to be satiated.
"There is no way to find a logical way to deal with this when logic isn't involved."
There isn't major character development for the two protagonists, however, this is expected considering the tale will continue in other parts and hasn't seen major progress in this book. Although Rose does develop a bit, at least she figures out what she wants and that she can't wait for her crush to grow up or take a decision, Morgann's host seems to require several hard slaps on the face to wake him up.
Although there aren't many profound images in the novel, Twice Upon a Time has many beautiful quotes. I also liked the idea of calligraphy and how it connects the characters together, including Rose and her new crush. The following bit will you give you an idea on what I mean.
"To make it work, I have to focus like I do in calligraphy with the ductus; its' the same mechanism: one step at a time in a specific order. I have to remember to breathe. To ensure the fairytale ends well, I will stand by her side until she trusts me and she's ready for me. At last."
I liked that the ending to Twice Upon a Time was different from what I expected.
Note: I received a free copy of Twice Upon a Time from author Hope Irving in exchange for an honest review. I look forward to reading the next part(s) in the series, which I've been told are likely to be published in 2016.
Only complaint Virgil dude you go slower than a snail when it came to Rose. Seriously I have grandmas who are no longer with us that go faster in doing things than you did with Rose. It’s noble and sweet but you snooze you lose buddy.
this is a interesting twist on fairy tales. We have Virgil who is inhabited by the soul of Morgann. Morgann was a monk who fell in love with the witch whose soul is in Rose. She and Morgann wrote the Book of the Dead and this was coveted by many people. So we have the forsaken love of these two and the book that everyone wants. The book gets the witch, Deidre, killed. Only she put a spell on Morgann. In order to break the spell, whoever has the soul of Morgann must help purify his soul, kill those that are dark and want the book and their guardian angel helps determine those that should be killed, keep the book safe and find Deidre and be together again. Sounds easy peasy lemon squeezy right? Nope…just ask slow as molasses Virgil.
Don’t get me wrong love Virgil I do he is truly noble and wonderful but he wants too make sure it is Rose that is attracted to him and not fate that has it all happening. He wants Rose to have free will and this gets him up a creek without a paddle and has Rose out of his radar and possibly in danger.
The story is intriguing with all the nuances. The love story of Morgann and Deidre and how it spills into the lives of Virgil and Rose. the tale of Rose and Virgil and how they meet each other and dance around one another. Rose is feisty and doesn’t trust easy. She has been burned before and takes this out on Virgil. There are times when I don’t like Rose to much like going off with Bruce and the last time on the whale watching tour. She blurts what she thinks without thinking of the consequences. And her rash ways especially when it comes to Bruce aren’t good. virgil is a good guy and very noble. He loves Rose but doesn’t want to mess her up. He is afraid of what will happen to her. When she begins to spend more time with Bruce he backs off more but is sad. He has lost his friend and someone who supports him and understands him. Suddenly you think things are going to work out and another twist comes about and now you wonder what is next for these two.
Bruce the one who comes between rose and Virgil I don’t get a good feeling about. The cat incidents really wigged me out heck who does that to their cat. He comes off as the perfect gentlemen. Kind and thoughtful but I don’t know I think he is more than we think and not in a good way.
this is a intriguing nicely written story where the characters really make the book. Their actions and their pasts shape them and the book. We get a fascinating story of love and redemption but also a story that has a air of danger and mystery. Look forward to the next one in the series.
Twice Upon a Star has a lot of potential. A forbidden love between a monk and a witch, then throw in the urban legend and that book called Black Angel Book. Who would say no to this Urban Fantasy?
There’s this one novella that captured my eyes a few months ago, a story (time travel/immortality) between a Knight and a modern woman. It was really good and I was sad that it was too short. So whenever I come across a book that it quite similar to it, I take a chance and one-click it. Reading the blurb of Twice Upon a Star – I didn’t hesitate to start reading it.
I’m giving this two point five stars because it felt short for me. Maybe I had expected the story to be as exciting and interesting as the last Urban Fantasy that I’ve read (with similar plot), or maybe I just couldn’t fully connect with the characters.
Morgann and Deidre met in the eight century. They work together in completing a book that they were tasked to finish. Deidre is killed because she’s suspected to be a witch (which is yes, she is). Then they left Morgann to die. They’ve fallen in love, so hard and so strong that Deidre cast a spell to reunite their souls after death. Morgann’s soul has been transferred to one human body to another, centuries later. And he vowed to find Deidre and make her remember everything they had in the past.
It has everything I’ve wanted in my Urban Fantasy craving, but what went wrong? Virgil and Rose – the modern Morgann and Deidre. I had a hard time connecting with them. Rose’s back story is definitely intriguing. And Virgil - not sure about the name though – maybe I just couldn’t really imagine what he looks like the way he’s been described by Rose. Anyway, I felt that the first half was too slow. There were a lot of scenes that I found unnecessary and boring (to be included). But when the story picks up – around 50 percent – I started to enjoy it. There were twists and turns that made keep reading and the end was a bit of a cliffy.
Am I interested to read the second book? Yes, of course. I just hope that it won’t have a slow start like the first in the series. I would love to know what’s going to happen between Virgil and Rose.
I kind of have no idea where to start on this review, because I'm still in a, 'what did I just read?' sort of place. This is a tough one to review, not because it's bad, but because I really liked it! I will admit, that I did not immediately get pulled into this book when I first started it. I put it down a few times and kept going back to it, because it started off a little slowly. I kept reading, because although it started slowly, (in my opinion) it was intriguing and it was just a different story than I've read before. I had a hard time picturing Virgil, one because...I'm not fond of the name Virgil haha, and two I just had a hard time picturing this sexy-ugly giant...until, the author made the comparison to, if I remember correctly, Javier Bardem. Then it totally clicked in my head exactly what sexy-ugly is. Ha! Sounds so odd, but I totally get it!
I was also going insane because, you have these two people...maybe destined for each other, possibly soulmates, and they won't make a move. I wanted to headbutt Virgil (though he's too tall, I'd never be able to) and yell at him to grow a pair, and I wanted to throat punch Rose for being... I don't know, you know what I partially take it back. I can totally understand why she did what she did at certain parts of this book, but it also made me angry that she would just push aside her feelings and sort of move on so quickly. Okay, maybe it wasn't so quickly, because I probably would made similar choices based on the information that she knew. She shouldn't wait around for a guy that she really isn't sure what his intentions are because he's so back and forth...so mysterious. However, she makes a choice, a major life changing decision, in my opinion, but really only half her heart is into it. That to me is a little maddening, maybe because I know what's going on with Virgil and I want the two to be together already. Alright, I don't want to give anything away and my rambling probably doesn't make much sense if you haven't read this book. I can't wait to start on the second book and maybe yell at Rose and Virgil some more. Great start to the series and this is a new author to me, so I'm happy to say I'm definitely a new fan!
Twice Upon A Time (The Black Angel Book Series, Book 1) Hope Irving 4 stars
Once Upon a Time, a monk fell in love with a healer woman, a witch to be exact. Their love was forbidden, he was a Monk and had taken vows of celibacy. They were working on a book of magic together, and evil forces wanted the book for themselves. To protect their love, and their book, Deirdre cast a spell that Morgann and she would come back until they found each other. The end of the book would be written on Morgann’s body to protect it. For centuries Morgann’s soul has come back and inhabited other bodies, searching for Deirdre. She can’t remember who she was, or what they were, so he has to find her and remind her. All the while killing and destroying the descendants of the evil ones. Twice upon a time, Virgil meets Rose, and she’s the one. He can’t get enough of her, the spell on his body begins to take over and grow, showing him that she’s the one. But Rose has no memory of what they were or who she was. Virgil must remind her, help her find her memory. Virgil struggles with the fear that maybe Rose isn’t really the one either, she isn’t “his type” and he isn’t hers. But the attraction is there. Neither one wants to admit they are in love with the other one. While Virgil is afraid to make a move, and then find out Rose isn’t really Deirdre after all, in comes the knight in shining armor. Bruce. Bruce isn’t who he says he is, but he becomes plan B for Rose. She isn’t really interested in Bruce, but they are compatible. The man she wants, the man she’s crazy about, the man she loves everything about… well, that’s Virgil. But Virgil keeps pushing her away. Will they be able to find their happily ever after the second time around? Or is their love fated to never be? This is a good read, a little slow at first. I was hoping for more of the story to come out, but there is book two for me to read now.
