One of the most hostile and deadly places on earth. The Arizona desert is a vast inferno, infested with murderous bandits from both sides of the border, rustlers, robbers and outlaws of every kind. But when the Apaches escape the reservation and go on a bloody, killing rampage, the army calls on one of their former officers to come back as a scout. They ask Dave Macklin to help them track down the renegades and subdue them. Macklin reluctantly agrees, but he soon finds out it’s a decision he may not live to regret.
C. M. Curtis brings a background of diverse experience to his writing. He grew up in a small western community in cattle ranching country. His paternal grandfather was a wild horse hunter in his youth and his maternal grandfather is said to have actually met Butch Cassidy. Curtis' first paying job, at twelve years of age, was in a slaughter house. He later became a construction worker, a truck driver, a structural steel welder, a coal miner and a licensed building contractor.
In what he calls his second life, he has been a chiropractic physician, a radio talk show host, a newspaper columnist and, of course, a writer.
Not as well written as I expected based upon the reviews. It is a good Western but not in the same class as Elmore Leonard, Max Brand, Alan LeMay or Donald Hamilton.
Dave MacKlin, army veteran who sometimes scouted for his previous employer. He knew the Arizona desert better than any white man, but the Apaches knew it better all the old mines and water holes. He owned a small spread where he raised horses, and sold them to the Army. The Indians burned his ranch and stole his horses. A complex persona was MacKlin. He has an analytical mind he shows it through out this western adventure. Enjoyable reading detailed descriptions of the surrounding desert. I hope you'll get a chance to read and enjoy this book as I have. You won't be disappointed..
This should be a must read for fans of western fiction. Macklin is former army, former scout, former town marshal and former ranch foreman. The latter he did reluctantly. His friend, Eli, is a large ranch owner and he is losing cattle to rustlers. He is in failing health and needs Macklin's help. Not everyone wants him to succeed and it becomes apparent that there is a traitor in there midst.
Good to read, exciting, excellent description of landscape for a reader stranger, contains some consequential error beyond allowed author's liberty hence only 4 stars, even though I very mich liked the book
Dear Mr Curtis appears to have a very wry sense of humor. I like that. I also like that his bad guys are all around bad, even to each other and that his good guys aren't wizards but rather human and believable.
This is a great book. I like the way the author made Macklin a real nice man. Tough but with a code of honor. I hope to read more on Macklin in other books . I just wish the ending had been in the book. I will go to the webpage and read it but it would have Ben nice to read the ending in a small insert in the back of the book.
This story has all of the components that make a great western...action, adventure, a great plot, and a love story. The characters are strong western men and women.
