My first comment when I picked up this novel was "Final book... here we go. Finally." Little did I realize when I finished that I was incorrect. Turns out this wasn’t the last in the series... it’s like the story that never ends; it goes on and on my friends. I went off of the Goodreads organized list, but there are 3-4 additional books and more following! Again, still a strong believer that this series could have wrapped a long time ago or branched to a new series when the children grew up.
The beginning was extremely powerful and made for a page turner. But the middle and leading to the end felt like a lot of unnecessary filler text.
Spoiler alert - what happened to Desi was extremely intense for a 15-16 year old! Anything that was even remotely close to this intensity level was shared by adults or happened to adults. This was a whole new level of shock, especially since the book is dedicated to “the real Desi.”
Bill mentioned his mother and talked about her very briefly. We haven’t learned if she was still living; or if we did, I missed it somewhere in the last 3-5 novels. Last I remembered, she helped kill Janet then went back to the home, still living with her illness. Later we did learn she was still alive.
Jane's car accident was irrelevant. It came at the point of a story where nothing was "majorly" going on, nor had we really heard from these characters in awhile, so Nadler threw it in.
Also, and I cannot speak from personal opinion and mean no harm from this thought... why would Desi refuse the morning after pill? No explanation was given, other than maybe from Brittany sharing her experience. Because Desi refused the morning after pill, she couldn't start her new treatment and was scared she might be pregnant, even though she doesn’t want to be. I was just a little lost and confused with her thinking/decision making.
When we were close to the end, a lot of things seemed unresolved - big and little. "Big" being the upcoming trial and"little" bring too many for me to remember.
Nadler tried to put too much into this novel from the disaster that carries over from the previous novel as well as introducing new characters - history, background, personalities, connections, etc
Even though I am not the biggest fan of this series, and most folks have problem told me "well, you could just quit and stop reading" if they've read any of my reviews... I keep reading this series just for a sense of completing it. But also because it’s like a sitcom family show that I’ve been following too. Not the biggest fan, but I’ll keep reading.
