Cait and the gang set out to find a killer when novelist Amanda Lowman is found dead just an hour after speaking to the Mystery Lovers Book Club about her true crime novel, The Vampire Murders. As Cait delves into Amanda's death, she finds a spider web of lies and half truths that could very well be tied to a series of murders that took place fifteen years prior. The deeper Cait digs the more tangled the web and the closer she comes to being the vampire killer's next victim.
Kathi lives with her husband, kids, grandkids, and dogs in beautiful Lake Tahoe. When she isn't writing, Kathi likes to read (preferably at the beach or by the fire), cook (preferably something with chocolate or cheese,) and garden (planting and planning not weeding). She also enjoys spending time on the water when she's not hiking, biking, or snowshoeing, the miles of desolate trails surrounding her home. Kathi uses the mountain setting in which she lives, along with the animals (wild and domestic) that share her home, as inspiration for her cozy mysteries.

A light, cozy read set in the fall on Madrona Island where best friends Cait and Tara own Coffee Cat Books. Best-selling mystery author, Amanda Lowman, falls victim to a vampire copycat killer when she visits the island to research the deaths of two teenage girls whose bodies were found drained of blood 15 years ago.
I enjoyed the inventive plot. The mystical cat, Renfield, is cool, and the story of his forever home touching. I love Cait and Cody's easy relationship, and how protective he is of her. The bones of this story are friendship and family. This story is a winner, and I look forward to the next one!
Ms. Daley writes mysteries with a touch of magic and a little romance that I can always count on to provide a great escape for a few hours. I think I'd like to move to Madrona Island and meet all of the characters that Ms. Daley has developed so well in this series. A well plotted mystery with some truly macabre and sad history that kept me turning the pages.
I can always count on Kathi to produce a wonderful fun and perplexing mystery. Count Catula holds the readers attention for sure with a very good Halloween themed mystery with a macabre twist. I truly enjoy the on going and developing relationships that continue to evolve in this fun West Coast mystery series, with just a touch of magic this series is one of my favorites and one I can highly recommend.
I loved this book, it really kept me intrigued. When an author comes to the island and gives a talk at a book club about how she bases her books on true crime, and an unsolved crime of the past that happened on the island has her asking questions. When Cait finds her dead, she takes up with the investigation of what happened then and now. This story takes you twists and turns of how the past ties into the present. There are surprises along the way. Ms. Daley puts a lot of thought into her storytelling with developed characters and backgrounds to the stories. I love the characters and their interactions, you feel as if you are right there with them. I will definitely be continuing on with this series.
Fascinating cold case murders mix with today's murder of a thriller mystery writer who is appearing as a guest speaker at Coffee Cat Books. This adventure has Caitlin and Cody working to solve the 15 year old vampire style killings of two local high school girls, which is tied to a new murder. A twisted and tangled murder plot, mixed with a large pool of suspects and lots of hidden secrets among the old classmates make this a page turner. I love this family of characters, who with the help of their many pets solve all kinds of mysteries and murders. The island setting and Coffee Cat Books provide a vivid and varied background. This is a well done cozy mystery series with lots of fun and interesting cat guests who help solve murders. A must for cat lovers in particular and pet lovers in general.
I received this book from the author. This is my honest opinion and fair review.
Count Catula Whales and Tails Cozy Mystery, Book # 9 Kathi Daley 5 Stars
Synopsis:
Cait and the gang set out to find a killer when novelist Amanda Lowman is found dead just an hour after speaking to the Mystery Lovers Book Club about her true crime novel: The Vampire Murders. As Cait delves into Amanda’s death she finds a spider web of lies and half truths that could very well be tied to a series of murders that took place fifteen years prior. The deeper Cait digs the more tangled the web and the closer she becomes to being the vampire killers next victim. (Goodreads)
Review:
Cait always has a lot on her plate: co-managing Coffee Cat Books with her best friend, Tara, and co-directing the children’s choir with her boyfriend, Cody. She does not have time to solve another mystery, but that is exactly what happens when an author visiting the island is killed. But how can she not try to find the killer since she was one of the last people to see the author alive.
The characters are well developed, well rounded and three dimensional. Cait and her Murder Board gang are all likable characters that you want to spend time with. Kathi Daley is very talented in her character development and I always feel like they are friends that I get to spend time with. This is one of the many reasons that I enjoy reading anything she writes.
As usual, there is more than one mystery to solve, which is typical in the books written by this author. There is the current murder and a double murder from years ago. The two are expertly woven together (as they always are) and possibly connected. There are enough suspects, clues, twists and turns to make if very difficult to solve them. Luckily, Cait has help from a magical cat to make things a little easier. These cats make this series even better.
I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well plotted cozy mystery with a touch of otherworldliness. This is a great Halloween book but you can read and enjoy it in any season. If this is a new series to you, I would suggest reading all of these books. If you are already a fan of the Whales and Tails Mystery series, this is a must read.
Count Catula is the 9th book in the Whales and Tails series by Kathi Daley. This cozy mystery quickly draws the reader in to the adventures of Caitlyn “Cait” Hart on Madrona. Coffee Cat Books, the coffee bar/bookstore/adopt-a-cat lounge owned by Cait and Tara is decorated for Halloween. The Mystery Lovers Book Club featured a presentation by investigative, true crime author, Amanda Lowman. Amanda is researching “The Vampire Murders” which encompassed at least 4 murders many years before, two occurring on Madrona Island. Shortly after the meeting Amanda is found murdered by someone closely replicating he earlier murders. Was Amanda too close to solving the cold case(s)? Will Cait and her sleuthing team get too close to unraveling the cold cases too? What role will Renfield, a mystical cat, have in this story? Tansy and Bella have no idea as dark influences are involved.
Kathi Daley has penned another well-written, fast paced, classic cozy mystery, with a tightly woven plot with a host of twists and turns that is perfect for Halloween. Count Chocula has a number of elements heightening the suspense which serve to give the reader a historical, cold case, true crime feel/sensation. This book can be read as a stand-alone but, if you appreciate cozy mysteries, you will want to read the series. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well-crafted cozy mystery. Young or old If you like cozy mysteries, this book would be a perfect choice for your Halloween themed reading enjoyment.
Full Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed in this review are my own
I enjoy Kathi Daley's cozy mysteries so much! Count Catula is a well developed tale with people that I love. The interaction of the major characters is one of my favorite parts of the story but mystery is strong and unexpected. I love the device that she uses in the Whales and Tails series of having a visiting cat directly assist in the investigation! Any involvement by animals is great but the fact that these down to earth books have one mystic element is delightful.
4 stelle e mezza.
While on the island to research her next true crime based novel based on the Vampire Murders, author Amanda Lowman agrees to meet with the members of Coffee Cat Books book club. But when she herself is found murdered in a similar manner to the original victims, Cait (who also happened to find the body) realizes she has another mystery to solve. This is confirmed when one of Tansy's cats comes to her, named Renfield, hopefully with clues of his own. These were particularly brutal murders at the time, with no definite suspects, but will Cait be able to unravel this mystery or will she end up the latest victim? This series always provides an enjoyable mystery with plenty of clues and twists before the final conclusion. And as always, the animal cameos in each story are delightful. I look forward to the next book in this series, especially to follow the growing relationship between Cait and Cody. Disclosure: I was gifted a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Awesome Read! Count Catula is the ninth book in Kathi Daley’s awesome Whales and Tails Cozy Mystery series. Ms. Daley’s writing style flows smoothly and this book is an easy and fun read. The mystery is well plotted and the author did an excellent job describing the characters and their backgrounds. Multiple murders, tons of suspects, lots of hints and clues, and I surprised by the final reveal. Ms. Daley writes clean cozy mysteries featuring no gratuitous sex, violence, or foul language and there is emphasis on relationships … friendships, family, community, and our furry friends. I highly recommend all Ms. Daley’s books to anyone who enjoys a well-crafted cozy mystery.
Cait has invited Amanda Lowman, a popular mystery author, to be the guest speaker for last meeting of the Monday night mystery book club that Coffee Cat Books sponsors. Amanda writes mysteries and focuses on fictionalizing unsolved crimes. She’s currently researching a double homicide of two teenage girls that occurred on Madrona Island on Halloween night fifteen years ago. Those murders were called the Vampire Murders because the blood was completely drained from both bodies and each victim had two small puncture wounds. Shortly after the book club, Cait and her boyfriend, Cody, try to return a notebook belonging to Amanda and they discover her dead in her hotel room. Deputy Holden is assigned to investigate the murder because Deputy Finnegan is out of town. Deputy Holden isn’t familiar with Cait and suspects that she’s involved in the murder, so she and her sleuthing gang must work under the radar to figure things out. Cody finds an orange cat outside Coffee Cat Books and Tansy, who people claim is a witch, says that the cat, whose name is Renfield, is there to help Cait solve the mysteries.
Kathi delivers another thrilling read filled with murder and mystery. In this new adventure Cait and her crew try to solve the murder of novelist Amanda Lowman and wonder if it's connected to two deaths that occurred 15 years before. Along the way Cait meets a wonderful cat named Renfield who tries to help lead her in the right direction. Who could the killer be? Will she follow Renfield? Are the murders connected? Read and find out!!! You will love the interaction between all the characters and look forward to reading more.
It's Halloween season on Madrona Island. There is a murder of a visiting author who was investigating a murder from years ago. The author is killed in a manner that is similar to the murder that she is investigating. Is it a copy-cat murder or is the same person still on the island?
This is a fast-paced story with lots of twists and turns and will keep you guessing until the end.
Once again Cait and the gang find themselves in the middle of another murder investigation. An author body is found after her talk at a mystery book club. Seems she was on the island researching an old unsolved murder of two teenage girls. Could she have gotten too close to the truth?
Kindle Unlimited liked it but didn't love it hence 4 stars. Wasn't anything stupid such as typos or anything like that, just didn't love this.

Count Catula is book 9 in the Whales and Tails series by Kathi Daley. This series takes place on the small islands outside of Seattle, WA. I love this series as I do other series by this author. Her mysteries are fun and easy to read, my teenagers enjoy them as well. There is no inappropriate scenes for kids and is not scary. This story, like the others, flows smoothly and quickly. The characters are easy to relate too and are easily likeable. Count Catula is of an author who came to the town to investigate a 15 year old double murder that was never solved. When she was quickly murdered herself, Cait and friends help in solving all three of the murders. This can be read as a stand-alone, but is always better to start the series from the beginning. Looking forward to reading the tenth book.
I love Kathi Daley and all her cozy mystery series. I especially like this series because it's got magical cats: I like the setting and the characters. I'll read the whole series because I'm definitely hooked even though I wonder how many people can get killed on a small island. LOL. This book, though, was not my favorite. It didn't seem like much more than constantly going back and forth talking to people and reporting conversations over and over. Still--it does what a cozy mystery is supposed to do, though, and kept me occupied for a little more than an hour with a cat on my lap in front of a fire.
This is the 9th book in the Whales and Tales mysteries by Kathi Daley. It was a quick fun read. I especially liked the cold case connection of "The Vampire Murders" to a present day murder. Renfield the cat was so adorable. And I was really happy that Cait now understands the role of the cats that come into her life and is devising ways to communicate with them. This was a very enjoyable story for halloween.
I enjoy all the books I have read by Kathy Daley. Cait owns a bookstore with a coffee shop. A visiting author is murdered. Cait and her friends investigate. Magical cats appear to assist Cait. There are a lot of suspects connected to the murder and to two murders committed 15 years earlier. The story has a Hallowe'en theme. I like the characters, and the plot. I also like the recipes at the end. Each recipe is mentioned in the story.
I love reading this series. It’s kinda funny I’m reading it out of order but still getting all the background info easily. Each book can be read as a stand alone even tho it’s nice to see the characters grow as you go along. The mystery had me confused at first but things were coming together pretty well at the end to guess at it. Loved it ! Don’t forget there’s a bit of romance and recipes are included.
I enjoyed this book with a Halloween theme. The murders were grusome but not to descriptive. The animal element in this series is interesting as a strange cat is involved in solving the crime. I like meeting new cats every book. Friends and family play a great part in this series another enjoyable part. Good read and better seasonal one.
Halloween is almost here when Cait stumbles across a dead body and a new magical cat shows up. Is the new murder related to two murders from fifteen years ago or is it all a big coincidence. The gang gets started investigating while the new cat leads Cait to clues.
I think if this book had another 25 pages of detail about the community and interaction between the characters it would have been a five-star read for me. It seemed that the objective was to produce a quick read, and while the plot did not suffer, I was not as invested in the characters as I usually am with the author's books.
This book was hard to put down it had so many red herrings. Spoiler alert: When Cait was in extreme danger toward the very end, HOW DID Cody FIND HER? Thank you, Kathi, that this is first book i have read of yours that leaves something out that is important. BRAVO!
Cait and Cody are getting ready for Halloween and things settling down in their community. A special mystery writer guest is visiting the bookstore and announces that she is writing about tan unsolved double murder from their town. Then she ends up murdered. Of course Cait has to check into it. But will she survive.
Cait is sent a cat when she is to solve a murder. This time an author is murdered after speaking to her mystery book club. Lots of twists and turns with this one. The author was investigating two murders that happened 15 years ago. A great book.
Wonderful series. And characters. Somehow a cat finds its way to help find clues to murder suspect. Close knit island life is disturbed by a recent murder linked to cold case.
I received Count Catula through a Goodreads giveaway. Even though this is book 9 in a series, it was easy to jump in and get reading. I liked Cait, Cody and their friends and thought it was really neat how a mystery cat, Renfield, helped solve the murder. There was an interesting connection between past and present crimes. Count Catula was a fun, fast paced cozy Halloween mystery. I'd love to read more from this series.
The characters are like family by now and keep evolving nicely so you won't be bored. This mystery was very intriguing, not easy to figure out but not one where you're mad the ending came out of left field!
