Best selling author Sue London created the beloved Regency romance series The Haberdashers. If you like your historical romance with a little action, a little humor, and a lot of strong-minded women, then this is the series for you!
Recent reader reactions: "Sue London is a very gifted writer. I always enjoy reading her books." ~ Annie "It was so well written, and the storyline is wonderfully thrilling. If I could I would have rated this book a ten, but five is all they allow so that's what it is." ~ Pattimari "This witty love story enchanted me, and I look forward to reading more of the Haberdashers series." ~ ReaderLady
I liked this book, but honestly, after waiting so long for this book, I was a little disappointed with Charlotte.
Charlotte is the daughter of an Oxford professor and has joined a house party hosted by her cousin, Lolly. Charlotte while not exactly shy, is quiet, studious, placid and well, dull. I have been wracking my brain trying to think of another character I could compare her with and the best I can come up with is Lilith (Cheers). Charlotte is not comfortable around people and when her cousin asks Charlie to "pair" up with her for the duration of the party, she is shocked by her reaction to him.
Charlie is vivacious, charming, funny and an all around great guy. He has struggled to start his own stables and is finally beginning to see his dream come to fruition. He is not sure what to make of the lovely quiet woman that Lolly has paired him with, but in true Charlie fashion, he sets out to charm her.
Charlotte and Charlie begin a friendship of sorts. Charlie finds himself telling Charlotte things he has never shared with anyone and he even thinks of a future with her, even though he is in no position to offer for her. When Charlotte and Charlie share a kiss, it becomes clear that Charlotte might be quiet and placid, but she is my no means passionless! Shocked to the core by their reaction to each other, they avoid each other. When another guest insults Charlotte and Charlie comes to her defense and is asked to leave the party. Charlotte is upset and for the first time, shows some emotion and berates her cousin for sending Charlie away. Desperate to see him one last time, she sets out to find him and the unimaginable happens.
Charlie feels incredible guilt for the accident that injured Charlotte and decides that he must marry her, so he can take care of her. Charlotte knows she loves Charlie and doesn't want to be a burden, nor does she want a marriage based on guilt. She is slow to accept and Charlie does his best to convince her to give him a chance.
The rest of the book is a bit slow, Charlotte's recovery and introduction to the Haberdashers is well done and surprisingly emotional. Charlie and Charlotte are clearly made for each other and will have a long rough road to their HEA.
This book is good, the writing is practically flawless, but I expected more and I felt that Charlotte was just a little too dull, she was perfectly likable, sensible and even insightful, but she was boring and I never really warmed up to her.
This is a good addition to the series and if you have read the other books (which are fantastic) you will definitely want to read this installment! If you are new to the series, you could read this as a stand alone title, but I would highly recommend reading the books in order.
As usual, I enjoyed this addition to the Haberdashers series. I loved watching Charlie and Charlotte fall in love. And it was nice having a different sort of heroine. I only wish we got to see a bit more of their life at the end. I hope we see them more in future novels.
I had expected Charlie's story to be a light, humorous journey, and some of it was, but his deeper turmoil and Charlotte's strong seriousness made it a different kind of book.
Their close friendship and the growth of that after Charlotte's accident into a strong loving relationship makes this book a little bit different than the others in the series.
As always, the Haberdashers are a fun lot, as are their respective spouses. The horses Charlie cherishes and Charlotte's gentleness with Valerian is sweet.
Love this series, London's writing. Waiting for more.
I like the way Sue London takes a normal situation and views it from a different perspective. In this novel, a very socially adept young man is attracted to a quiet intellectual woman. Opposites attract? Well maybe. But it could be that they each see the world similarly, but choose to put on a different mask. Well done, Sue!
Once again, an oddly abrupt ending plus this one dragged in the middle. A little less time with Charlotte as a bedridden invalid, and a little more conflict between characters that barely know each other would have been welcome. To any reader of the series, Charlie’s character clearly had more to him than revealed in the previous books. This installment definitely gets points for the way he was developed and revealed to the reader.
Clearly, we need an ultimate confrontation between Charlie and Robert which I assume will take place eventually. The author plans 8 installments for the series. I’m confused by the direction of the next one, which revolves around a character very much in the periphery of the Haberdashers’ circle. I am highly curious to learn what Lady Spencer has to offer in the long game which surely must involve the return of he evil Viscount/father.
Whilst I liked the story of Charlie and Charlotte I really quite like a story to have an ending. I was very disappointed at this ending. Approaching annoyance I think. Cheated from a conclusion. Kindly deal with that please. Or is it a ploy to read the next book. If so no ploys were actually needed.
What a horrible ending. I feel it is not finished. Maybe horse racing? It isn't complete. Or maybe I missed something. I liked this story until the end. It just stopped in the middle of Charlie's thoughts about racing his horses.
I was very disappointed in this book felt unfinished like the author decided she couldn't be bothered which I was surprised at considering her other books
It took a long time to get goIng and just as we got to the mystery and the romance it ended....but I suppose that's to get us to buy the next few books.
While I liked the original nature of this book it lacked conflict and ended quite suddenly. Obviously the author is trying to add additional books than were originally planned for this series and this story was needed to form the framework. However it just needed more. 2.5 stars.
