After rushing to the altar and moving across the country, Harper Duquaine (or is it MacLaughlin, now?) is in uncharted territory. What once seemed like a promising opportunity to advance her husband’s career while giving her some much needed independence and adventure has proven to be a bust. By the time fall rolls around again, she’s back in a boring job by day and overstocking her inventory of crocheted scarves by night. Not even the prospect of a new football season holds much excitement.
At least that’s what she thought. Harper suddenly finds herself the manager of not one but two fantasy football teams—each with its own set of drama. Between the added pressure of her new marriage, an unexpected career prospect, and the hiccups created by people from her past and present worlds, Harper quickly finds herself going from bored to overwhelmed.
Can she hold up under the pressure, or will Harper learn the hard way that the turf isn’t always greener on the other field?
Laura Chapman is the author of sweet and sexy romantic comedies, including Playing House, The Marrying Type, the Queen of the League series, and other stories. A native Nebraskan, she loves football, Netflix marathons, and her cats, Jane and Bingley.
Harper MacLaughlin together with her husband Brook and their cat Blitz, have moved to Seattle where Brook coaches college football. It’s a new life with fresh challenges, and changes for both of them. However, their fantasy football league remains a constant along with the other team members such as Gio, Wade, and JJ.
During a dinner at Brook’s boss’ house, Harper and Witney (another of the wives), get pushed into joining a new fantasy football league. The Real Coach’s Wives of Seattle is run by Angie O’Dwyer, the wife of Brook’s boss. This throws Harper and Witney together and they become firm friends.
As with previous books in this Queen of the League series, the chapters have a score tally and run-down on the progress of the leagues that Harper has joined. It’s a fun and different addition which works well.
JJ makes more of an appearance in this book than in the previous two. An ex-colleague of Harper, and friend to Brook, JJ shows up in Seattle looking to stay with them. There’s an air of mystery to why he’s visiting and Harper tries her best to get to the bottom of it. JJ isn’t the most reliable or trustworthy of people. I’d had my reservations about him before and they resurfaced in this third instalment. For all his faults, JJ is Brook’s friend and that shines through. He steps up to the plate and supports Harper in her hour of need, redeeming himself. I loved JJ’s ‘sofa king.’ I caught on immediately but it took Harper and Brook an age to figure it out. I won’t go any further on ‘sofa king’ but once you read it, you’ll know what it refers to. I might even use it myself!
There are plenty of new characters to get to know – a few of which sounded off alarm bells. Again, I don’t want to spoil the surprise or plot line, but you’ll know who they are when you come across them. Team Stitches, Harper and Amelia’s online boutique selling knitted and crocheted garments, also make a comeback. They work hard to make the business a success despite no longer living in the same State as each other. It’s not easy for them but with a little help from a surprise stranger, things move full steam ahead.
Although the book probably falls into the category of chick-lit, it has some current topics running through it. In today’s society sexual harassment occurs. It always has done. The difference being that the victims are now coming forward, standing up and saying ‘hey, this has happened to me, and it’s not acceptable.’ It was an excellent addition that drills the message home that sexual harassment is not okay and will not be tolerated. Well done to Laura Chapman for bringing the subject up and putting that message out there.
I’m not giving away the ending, so you’ll have to read it for yourself. The whole story from start to finish had me captivated. I couldn’t put it down. It’s a brilliant third instalment in the Queen of the League series. Here’s hoping for a fourth!
Having read the first two books in the Queen of the League series, I was looking forward to catching up with Harper, to see what life had in store for her and her crew. One thing is for sure: it’s never a dull moment! Although Harper finds herself stuck in a job that she’s less than enthusiastic about, what’s going on in her personal life and other external conflicts really add to the chaos in her world. Particularly when one of Brook’s good friends shows up out of nowhere. Or when Brook’s employers do all they can to stir the pot.
And speaking of bad bosses… Harper never would have imagined she’d find herself in such a tough compromising position. Brooke’s job is very important to him, to the both of them. When his boss crosses a line that should have never even been embarked upon to begin with, she’s not sure which direction she should go in, who she should talk to, or if she should say anything at all. I really liked how Laura Chapman approached this- I felt as though it was a very real and honest look at how a woman, in this case Harper, feels when stuck in the middle of a bad situation.
I could see just how much growth Harper has had since First & Goal and Going for Two. It wasn’t so long ago that she’d been single, and while she enjoyed and appreciated her life as a single woman, it was like her story really began when she met Brooke, because she discovered so much more about herself. Fast forward to the present, moving out of state, starting over where she doesn’t know anyone, and having conversations with Brooke about potentially starting a family. Is she even ready for such a huge commitment? Are either of them?
And as always, there are layers of fantasy football league scenarios- while I haven’t signed up with any league as of yet, every time I read one of Laura’s novels, I always feel this immense need to do so! She makes it sound so fun, and I love that it showcases how fantasy football isn’t just a man’s game. What an awesome way to empower everyone into being part of something they enjoy. Three & Out is definitely a big win in my book for Team Chapman!
Football in the fall! One of the many reasons I love Three & Out and the whole Queen of the League series. But you don't have to be a football lover to enjoy these stories. You will fall in love with Harper and Brook, just like I did.
Each story in this series takes Harper and Brook further in their relationship. And we get to be there to watch them grow and mature, as they deepen their commitment to each other. Oh sure, they have their ups and downs, just like any other normal couple would but they eventually figure out what is important and we get to be there when they make up.
This whole series is just so wonderful and I think each book just gets better and better. I can't wait to see what comes next! Great job, Laura—I loved visiting Harper and Brook's world again. I hope we get invited back again real soon!
Another book TOUCHDOWN for Laura Chapman! You can count on Harper to keep you entertained! I enjoyed the added bonus of the second fantasy football league and the coaches' wives club drama. What is crazy is that I could totally see this story coming to life - such realistic fiction that makes me enjoy the story even more! Can't wait to see what happens to Harper & Brook next!
I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review.
I loved this book! I loved the series! To be honest I think I have a girl crush on the author! Well maybe not a crush but I definitely love her style. Author Laura Chapman never disappoints with her witty and charming style of writing that leaves you turning the pages with a smile on your face wondering what the Queen of the League will get into next. THREE & OUT turns out to be my favorite in the series with its funny yet emotional feel.
Harper and Brook find themselves newly married, newly relocated to Seattle and in the beginning of a new fantasy football season. How will Harper cope with another season? Who will she pick? What will her strategies be ? Yes! Strategies! Harper finds herself immersed in 2 leagues this season and there is never a lack of hilarity or drama when football and Harper are involved. Harper and Brook find themselves back in a familiar position with her becoming a widow to football season, so in true Harper fashion she turns to knitting and her fantasy league. Harper shows a deeper level of maturity and understanding in this book although her sass isn't ever far off. Brook continues to have hope and faith but you get a deeper feeling that even though hes an amazing coach on the field and off, he actually doesn't go unaffected by life's curveballs making him seem more human. Although lets face it, we would all benefit with a Brook in our life.
THREE & OUT is so much more than fantasy football this go around. It touts love, friendship, sensitive social issues, growth and laughter. With every door that closes one opens up and at the end of the day what happens, happens and how you handle it is what separates you from the crowd, that's the lesson I learned from this amazingly awesome book.
Note: This book wasn't written as a stand alone and I highly recommend you read FIRST & GOAL and GOING FOR TWO first. They are just as amazing as the 3rd installment !!!
In Three & Out, the third book in the Queen of the League Series, author Laura Chapman weaves an entertaining chick lit / romantic comedy tale that continues the trials and tribulations of Harper Duquaine MacLaughlin, as she tries to balance daily life issues, work issues, and friendship issues, while delving into the third year of the competitive world of fantasy football leagues.
Author Laura Chapman takes her personal passion for fantasy football leagues and creates a hilarious chick lit / romantic comedy series with a football theme. She weaves a sassy tale full of humor and drama that easily draws the reader into the continuation of Harper's story as she tries to try juggle the challenges in her life with the fierce competitiveness of fantasy football leagues.
In Three & Out, the focus is on how Harper deals with the challenges of everyday life issues, especially with her recent marriage to Brook, and their relocation from Lincoln, Nebraska to Seattle, Washington for Brook's new coaching position at Seattle State, while participating in two fantasy football leagues: The Mega Ballerz (her original league) and The Real Coaches' Wives of Seattle (the league run by the college football coaches' wives).
I really enjoyed the continuation of Harper's story as the drama of adjusting to married life and the relocation to Seattle are added into the mix of the everyday life issues that Harper faces, along with the hilarious trash talking and rivalry of the fantasy football leagues. I couldn't help but snicker as Harper went back to drafting players on the fly like she did in her first year in the fantasy league, in the hope that she'll come out on top and win that elusive championship. Harper has a lot going on in her life, but with Brook by her side, this sassy girl can overcome all the challenges that come her way! I hope that there will be more books in the series, I can't help but want to keep up with Harper and Brook's latest adventures.
As a diehard NFL fan (Dallas Cowboys) and fantasy football league enthusiast, I loved reading every book of the Queen of the League series, they are so much fun and will keep you thoroughly entertained! I would be remiss if I didn't mention how much I agree with our girl Harper on the fugliness of the NFL team throwback uniforms, they are simply hideous!
Three & Out is an exciting and fast paced story that flows smoothly and easily keeps the reader turning the pages. Author Laura Chapman sure knows how to weave an enjoyable series that keeps her readers in stitches. You can't help but get caught up in Harper's roller coaster ride of a life full of drama and sweet romance, it's simply delightful!

Three & Out Recap: Team Chapman pens another winner!
I loved the continuation of Harper and Brook’s story. This novel finds them newly settled in Seattle after moving for Brook’s new coaching job. Things start off slow for Harper and as fantasy football seasons progresses, she finds that she’s got too much going on to handle it all. She continues to grow in her relationship with Brook, and although they have their drama and situations, they always work it out in the end. That’s part of what being married is all about, being on the same team, supporting one another, and working together to make it work.
J.J’s role in this novel adds a comical layer and I couldn’t help but laugh out loud at some of the situations the characters manage to get themselves into. This story was entertaining and funny and captured my attention from the first page to the last. I doubt I’d ever be interested in being on a fantasy football team, but it was fun pretending to immerse myself in it by living vicariously through Harper for a few days while reading this novel. I can’t wait to read the next one in the series to see where life takes them next!
In Three & Out we continue to get to know Harper and her crazy football fantasy cohorts. We see Harper and her husband Brook as they moved across the country to follow Brook as he has a new position at the university as an assistant coach. Harper is just trying to find her way in this new city but as much as she wants to be the supportive wife she does miss her family and friends back home and to be quite honest isn't really feeling the fellow coaches wives. However, she takes them up on their offer to join their fantasy team but as she will soon find out maybe she has bitten off more than she can chew. She soon finds herself in some awkward positions one that might boost her career and another that might take down those she loves the most.
I love that we see the feisty Harper in all her glory. I also enjoy that she wants more out of life and isn't settling for anything less. She has grown so much from the start of the series till now and is even willing to throw caution to the wind and just let things happen. Back are all the same characters we have grown to love and some new ones that will just make you want to hate them. Throughout this series, I have always had a special place in my heart for Harper. She was a girl after my own heart, she loved football and she entered this world of fantasy football not knowing anything but soon found out a lot more about herself and who she could become.
Three and Out are more than just about football it's about life. Growing up and coming into your own. Making those life choices and realizing that it isn't all about just yourself but about others and sacrificing something for that better outcome in the end. Three & Out is another great book that continues to surprise me and keeps me rooting for Harper.
Generally, I enjoyed this book. Three & Out caps off the Queen of the League Trilogy and ties all of the loose ends in a crowd-pleasing fashion. Harper and Brook are starting their first year of marriage in Seattle (and of course, Blitz is there, too) and Brook is coaching for the Seattle State Sounds. Harper lacks a focused career, but her up and coming Team Stitches is certainly on the rise. Old friends intermix with new ones and Harper and Brook face various challenges as they try to acclimate to life in Seattle. Some of the plot twists were a bit lost on me, but I liked how the book wrapped up in the end!
As with the rest of this series, this book is teaming (get it? TEAMING?) with wit, humor, and a heaping side of swoon. Brook and Harper are #relationshipgoals and the cast of secondary characters add plenty of fun and dimension to Brook and Harper's world. I admit to not being a huge football fan, but that didn't matter - I enjoyed the series anyway (and maybe even learned a little something). Laura Chapman is an author you can count on to deliver a great story and she did so yet again with THREE & OUT. Grab this one and the rest of the series. You won't be disappointed.
Great chick lit. Fun and sweet, with serious high drama. It's another hilarious, compelling read we've come to expect from this series. I sat up reading past midnight because I just had to find out what happened to Harper and Brook. Love this series!
It was nice reading one of Laura Chapman's books again. Fantasy football was a new topic for me, and I enjoyed reading and learning about it. I would have liked to get to know Whitney Reeves more through her friendship with Harper Duquaine. I got an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
