“I never did write songs for country radio. I wasn’t a country singer and am still not a country singer. I just write songs and play them. I’m Guy Clark. My songs are not really geared to sell a lot of records and have hits. I just do what I do.”There’s an old American cliché of a question, one that was more common when the death penalty was routine: What would you have for your final meal? Not sure about the answer to that one, but I do know what I hope the last song I hear will be: Guy Clark’s Dublin Blues . I’ll remember being at Austin’s Texas Chili Parlor, sitting on the Spanish Steps, walking in Spain, seeing the David and the Mona Lisa, and being at a Doc Watson concert when he actually sang Columbus Stockade Blues . I’ll remember being too proud to come in out of the rain. And most of all, I’ll remember my lost opportunities in life, as much as I would wish I could forget them. His songs have been an important part of my life longer than I realized.
Dublin Blues
Well, I wished I was in Austin, mm-hmm
In the Chili Parlor Bar
Drinkin' Mad Dog Margaritas
And not carin' where you are
But here I sit in Dublin, mm-hmm
Just rollin' cigarettes
Holdin' back and chokin' back
The shakes with every breath
So forgive me all my anger
Forgive me all my faults
There's no need to forgive me
For thinkin' what I thought
I loved you from the get go
And I'll love you 'til I die
I loved you on the Spanish Steps
The day you said goodbye
I am just a poor boy, mm-hmm
Work's my middle name
If money was the reason
Well, I would not be the same
I'll stand up and be counted, mm-hmm
I'll face up to the truth
I'll walk away from trouble
But I can't walk away from you
So forgive me all my anger
Forgive me all my faults
There's no need to forgive me
For thinkin' what I thought
I loved you from the get go
And I'll love you 'til I die
I loved you on the Spanish Steps
The day you said goodbye
I have been to Fort Worth, mm-hmm
And I have been to Spain
And I have been too proud
To come in out of the rain
And I have seen the David, mm-hmm
I've seen the Mona Lisa, too
And I have heard Doc Watson
Play Columbus Stockade Blues
Forgive me all my anger
Forgive me all my faults
There's no need to forgive me
For thinkin' what I thought
I loved you from the get go
And I'll love you 'til I die
I loved you on the Spanish Steps
The day you said goodbye
Well, I wished I was in Austin, mm-hmm
In the Chili Parlor Bar
Drinkin' Mad Dog Margaritas
And not carin' where you are
