When you look at a man’s past, who he is makes sense. Things previously shrouded become clear, and the airs of mystery that once clung so tightly to him, begin to fade away until all that is left is the being he hid like a dark secret.
Elish’s beginnings did not start out with a bang, but inside of a peaceful home far from the savage realities of the greywastes. But like all things in the Fallocaust, the peace didn’t last. One can be sheltered from the monsters of the dead world, but you can never escape the demon who hides under the mask of a smiling king.
Because in the end, reality is a beast that cares not for the perfect images it shatters, or the world it devours piece by piece. But reality can also strengthen, it can light you on fire, burn you to cinders, and then watch proudly as the phoenix rises from the ashes, stronger than it ever was before.
However, underneath each feather there is a scar, and though blood pumps hot through his veins, it is from a heart cold and closed off.
But it didn’t start out that way, quite the opposite. And this is his story.
Quil Carter has been writing stories since he learned how to write. Now that people seem to like his stories, this is pretty much what he is planning on doing with his life.
If I don't rate this 5 stars the blond chimera behind me says he's going to break every bone in my body. All credit for this book goes to Elish, I was merely his (hot) slave.
Ahhhhh!! I hate cliffhangers. I loved it. At first I wasn't sure I wanted to read Elish's backstory. I thought knowing everything about him would take something away from him. But I'm glad I did. I love Elish even more now. Little Elish was adorable. He was so young and so manipulative. Little Nero was hilarious. Him sucking on the dogs tail and chewing on things.
I loved Perish's take on young Elish and the rest. He was so right. “You’re seeing small versions of their future selves, and I’m telling you right now, it’s going to be a disaster. Elish will overthrow you, Nero will kidnap and rape you, Garrett is going to be a hermit shut-in with twenty cats, and Ellis is going to be a jilted single mom or an angry lesbian.”
Elish is manipulative and all that but young Elish was insane. His insanity was deserved though. Cristo...Todd... Ryan...Julian...Silas Ryan was just eww. The way he told Ryan he'd make him be with him was funny given how young he was. This had me laughing. "The audacity of his rejection roasted me alive, and his defense of Todd infuriated me. He should’ve held Todd for me as I murdered him. That was what boyfriends did, they helped each other no matter what." I can see Reaver agreeing with this.
Elish was cold and closed off but still had love to give and receive. He tried to not have feelings but he kept failing. The sad thing is that he knows this. "I’d been saying this since I was five years old, holding my dying hamsters in my clenched fist. But here I was, making mistake after mistake, letting myself get attached to these men and drinking of them, until I’d become addicted to their essence, and how they made me feel. I continued to make these mistakes, and whenever my heart broke, or Silas took them from me… I’d swear again the mistake wouldn’t be made again."
He just wanted to be loved. Given Elish's past, he should have killed Jade on sight. It's funny because two of my favorite quotes of Elish's is about his feelings. Both are from The Suicide King Volume 2 “Don’t thank me. I’m not pleased with it. Loving you has been the single worst mistake of my life. It’s just as enraging as I remember, and I’m making just as many mistakes.”
"I have killed boyfriends for having the audacity to make me feel those same emotions, for putting me through such turmoil, and I spent over thirty years planning on killing a king who had done the same. And, Cicaro, I swear on my unhealthy devotion to you–” He leaned in, and our eyes locked. “– I will kill you if you dare put me through that again. Do you understand me?”
Elish and Silas. Wow. I can understand why Elish wants to destroy Silas in later books. Silas was horrible to him so he shouldn't be surprised how Elish reacted. Elish is who he is because Silas made him that way. Although, a part of me has to say that I kind of liked the thought of them together.
That ending. I NEED the next book. Any idea when it will come out?
It happened again. I swear the levels of intrigue, manipulation, fear, hate and love in this series continues to astound me. And the brilliance of this writing is just mind blowing. A taste...
I think I wish to fly far away from here… and if the gods will not grant me flight… they will at least grant me death. Death is silence, it is quiet, it is final. In death, I won’t feel this dark hole where my heart had been, this physical pain that is making my body shake. In death, they cannot find me, and if I can stay hidden forever, they never will.
All I could hear was screaming, screaming, and screaming. But in the end… don’t we all die screaming?
I have loved Elish this entire series and in this book I loved him more with ever page. Definitely one of the most complex and well developed characters I have ever read.
Jesus Christ this was hard to read. I guess because elish's responses to his abuse were so much like my own responses. I felt like I was reading a diary of my own. For that reason this was a struggle for me. I both couldn't put it down and couldn't bring myself to read another word. I found myself thinking at several points "wouldn't you rather just die, Elish?" The end of this book filled me with the most terror I've had in a long time and I have to find out more because dear God it can't possibly go on like this. It has to get better. It has to.
The grand issue is, their personalities clash like fire and ice. One cannot blame Silas for the things he does and on the same note they cannot blame Elish for the way he reacts. Franky I believe one must simply die in order for the other to prosper...and I propose you kill Elish.
ELISH WAS RIGHT! ABSOLUTELY RIGHT! ELISH HAD EVERY RIGHT TO WANT TO KILL SILAS! HIS SIBLINGS WERE ALL IDIOTS FOR BLAMING ELISH WHEN IT WAS ALL AND ALWAYS SILAS ALL ALONG!
All of the torments and Silas killing their lovers were everything Elish had to endure as a CHILD! A CHILD!
Silas was stupid to not understand that what Elish becomes is a DIRECT RESULT of his own actions. This had me crying almost as bad for Sanguine. And while Sanguine's had a villain he could kill, Elish's abuser can't be destroyed and there's nothing else anyone can do to save him.
While I do love Silas and understand him, he needs to ask Elish for forgiveness instead of punishing him. The boy have been through enough. He should've spent every waking minute making it up to Elish.
Makes me wonder how Jade feels when he's reading the book.
A look into the beginning of Elish's life. Answers a lot of questions as to why he is the way he is. He's so standoffish in the previous books and I can understand why. Makes me love him even more. I have a serious love hate relationship with Silas, and after reading this I can understand Elish's desire to destroy him. He is one crazy dude. What he put Elish through at such a young age makes me want to keep him dismembered so he never comes back. And Nero, just wow. Who knew he could be that way. I love that brute chimera.
Really enjoyed getting to see the early years of the chimera's from birth. Sweet sweet twisted Jack, even at five years old! Like really twisted, no wonder they call him Grim.
And it goes without saying that Mr. Carter knocked it out of the park once again. Looking forward to reading Volume 2!
Garden of Spiders Volume 1 I like Elish Dekker from the beginning. I probably shouldn't have, he's mean practically a bully, but there was something about him that put him in my good graces. Now, after reading this book, I love Elish and all he stands for. Is he right? I'm not sure, but he sure fights for what he believes in and he takes planning to a whole new level.
So, I really hate Elish and it made this book hard to read mostly because I don’t care about how shitty his childhood was. I really struggled through this book because of my distaste for the character from other books and even after reading it, I still don’t really have any sympathy for him nor do I like him anymore. His story is just kind of frustrating and pathetic, but the book like all of Carter’s other books is well written with lots of attention grabbing details. It makes having to read about a character I despise so much bearable.
It’s so strange but so cool to read about Elish’s childhood. It still shocks me how different he is from his current self. He’s changed so much, and I can’t believe how naive he was back then, letting so many people take advantage of him so easily.
And I’m sorry… but Cristo Massey couldn’t not be a coincidence.
I think I say this in all my reviews, but I fucking hate Silas. Elish worshipped him when he was younger, and of course, Silas had to go and fuck with his head. Not just his, but all of his creations. They’re all the way they are because of him. He’s so pathetic.

I've mentioned before that we're not interested in the adventures of Luke Skywalker: Farm Boy. We don't care about Harry Potter's life before he went to Hogwarts. Good novels need character development, so a prequel too often puts us in a situation where we meet a character that needs to develop into who they as they were introduced, and this can often hit a bum note.
That wasn't the case here.
Elish is such a complex character even as the Fallocaust novels begin, and the bulk of his initial characterization came in the first companion novel, Breaking Jade. At this point he's one of the most important characters in the series, but he's always been a bit of an enigma, to an extent. He doesn't trust many people enough to let them in on the full extent of his plans, and even those he does trust (such as Jade) often don't know the full extent of the situation. He's a character that benefits from a prequel since his character is already so complex to begin with.
Garden of Spiders isn't as action heavy as a lot of the other books in the series, but this functions to make the action scenes- where they do appear- stand out. Like Breaking Jade, this book focuses more on romance; unlike Breaking Jade, however, this book chronicles Elish's life for a longer period and so it doesn't focus on one romance. Like any teenager, Elish has many crushes or relationships, and each of these is unique and portrayed in a different way. Of course, we know that Elish eventually ends up with Jade, but there's over half a century between the two books, with Elish being over seventy when he and Jade first meet. There's a lot of time for relationships to develop in that time.
This book also focuses on the relationships between the first generation; Nero and Elish, in particular, get a lot of time together, and their relationship has never been one that's been fleshed out to the extent of some of the other pairings. Crucially, this book goes a long way to fleshing out Elish's relationship with Silas, and that's always been one of the more complex pairings in a series full of them. It also goes out of its way to show, once again, that this is a series full of moral ambiguity. Recent books have gone out of their way to show that Silas isn't as bad as Elish portrays him, but this book shows that Elish does have valid reasons for his feelings, but rarely to the extent that it makes him seem outright villainous.
The last major relationship is between Elish and Julien, a mysterious young man from a broken home who Elish meets under strange circumstances. Their relationship is... there are no words for it. It's romantic, to an extent, but nowhere near as romantic as Elish and Jade, but also maybe the fact that Jade's my favorite character poisons me against him to an extent? I liked him enough as a character, and the way their relationship progressed totally blindsided me, so he was an interesting addition, and it goes a long way to explaining Elish's current mindset.
Overall, I adored this book, like I do any new book in the series. Every single book manages to bring something new to the table, and the companion novels in particular are full of little bits of fanservice that go a long way to explain something in the main series, or even later (chronologically) companion novels.
5 stars! It only took me 4 months to finish it. ONLY. Haha! I feel pretty awful not finishing it sooner. I don't know what was stopping me because I love Elish and really wanted to know his story. I'll be moving onto Volume 2 very soon because I can't handle that cliffhanger! Another thing I have to mention: Finn is too pure for this world and I would protect him with my life if I could. I don't want to know what kind of horrors will happen to my baby :(
Garden of Spiders is a must read in order to understand the genesis of Silas and Elish's relationship. We are introduced to Elish when he is an infant, Silas's favorite child, his golden boy. We also meet the younger (by mere minutes) siblings, Garrett and Nero, and his only sister, Ellis. It was fascinating to compare the young Dekkers to how I remember them as grown ups. Their personalities are the same. Can you imagine Nero as a wee babe gnawing on the leg of a table? Lol!
Like the other books in the series, the author doesn't hold back when it comes to violence and sex. It's graphic, raw, sickening and unbelievably vicious but necessary to understand the dynamics between Elish and Silas. My heart was broken over and over again as I played the spectator to the mad king toying with the emotions of his golden boy. I read every thought that went through Elish's young and fragile mind!
There is an unbelievable amount of emotional turmoil that left me drained throughout the whole book but there were glimpses of love and some humor too and that is what kept me turning the pages. I didn't see the surprises coming in the last chapter which left my heart reeling for the 15 year old Elish.
Quil Carter, you are nothing short of brilliant. Now I'm jonesing for volume 2 of Garden of Spiders. It can't come soon enough! Thanks to the author for another adrenaline filled tale which I'm rating 5+++ stars.
A few typos here and there, a couple of consistency issues too. Editing could be slightly better but I generally don't expect perfection from self-published books, especially not massive ones. I don't like deducting from book scores based on petty things anyhow.
Story content impeccable as always. This thing gets more and more Shakespearean with every book... The Dekker clan really puts every other feuding dynasty to shame (≧◡≦).
Score: 98/100... Those 0,02 points deducted since this is technically only the first volume of two and so I have a bit of a hard time rating it as a complete book. (Also that cliffy... Really? Massive raging internal panic going on here. I should give this a lower score out of spite for the potential psychological harm this has done to poor le moi, but I'm not feeling too vindictive at the moment since there's always volume two.)
I loved reading about child characters and seeing the story from their point of view. After Breaking Jade, I fell completely in love with Elish and was crying throughout this whole story because of how hard his past was. Personally, I still liked the king and was wishing that Elish could simply let go of his issues so that he could finally find peace with the king... Unfortunately that never happened even to the end, and now I can't bare to read the next book thinking Elish would only be going through more suffering. It's amazing that Quil can write a whole world out of just his imagination. <3
These books are so darned good. They are dark, twisted, terrorizing, and so very addictive. My poor Elish. I can absolutely see why you are the way you are, and how much humanity you have retained. Jade is the perfect husband for you, and I'm glad you have finally at long last found a small island of peace with him. Elish's childhood is heartbreaking. It's his siblings that get him through it, and I admire them all the more for their devotion to each other. If you read this series, this is a must have addition to your collection.
Yet another fantastic instalment. I was never a huge fan of Elish's character but I now understand him and my opinion of him has changed. So much more to say...
Poor Elish...He was the one I've struggled with a bit during this series because he was a bit of a wildcard and I didn't know his true intentions. The Companion series books are so immensely helpful in understanding why some of these characters are the way they are and do the things they do. I totally *get* Elish now and his story isn't even over yet, only his first 15 years. I got to view him as a child, along with Ellis and Garrett, and more importantly, Nero. I think my highlighted sections all involve him. I knew he was loyal when reading Sanguine's story but he was also loyal to Elish. Of course I don't want to jinx it because you never know what will happen in this series, but I was surprised that he and Elish had the relationship they did as children. All four of them were close. Honestly, poor Elish, right from the very start with the mispronunciation of his name and his frustration in communicating :( I didn't think that I could hate Silas any more than I already did, but I do. SO much more. What a piece of crap and I was cheering at the end during that scene where Elish was getting his revenge, until I realized Ceph, Apollo and Artemis witnessed it. That deflated my balloon and then that ending? Holy mother of all cliffhangers, I am so grateful the next book is ready to start, but as with this book, I will need to take several days off and read some other, lighter books and mentally prepare myself. That's how heavy and dark and consuming this series is. I am really looking forward to it while at the same time dreading it because this series definitely isn't for the faint of heart and I'm starting to wonder if anyone will have even a semi-HEA by the time it ends. Fingers crossed.
This is now one of my favorite books in the Fallocaust series. I actually didn't need any extra reasons to understand why Elish was the way he was. Elish is always right and that's the end of it. But this book did give me a whole new perspective of him. I somehow couldn't ever imagine him as anything other than the ice cold, reserved chimera that he was (even with everything that's happened with Jade), but he is actually much softer and more sentimental on the inside than he ever let on (and probably will ever admit to).
I hope Quil Carter never stops writing Fallocaust books because with every book I finish I dread the day I'll run out of more to read. I even purposefully read them as slowly as I can (and mostly at night too, suits the whole vibe of the books 😂). I don't even care if I never see the ending, they can just keep going in circles trying to overthrow each other and I'll happily read the next book and then the next and the next until the end of times. I've never had the same experience with any other series I've read but these chimeras have become a part of my life now. (not Nero, no matter what, I hate that guy. Even Sanguine's story couldn't make me like him). I'm REALLY curious to find out just WHY Elish is so spiteful towards Sanguine. What has my poor boy ever done to deserve it 😭
This had great storytelling and great character development, as always. It further developed the backstory for the entire series. Silas comes off even crazier and more evil and f'd up than ever before. Somehow, his character still keeps managing to get even more disturbing as the books go on. We also learn a lot about Elish and grow more of an attachment to his character in this book. As always though, I have such a love-hate relationship with this series. It's just so dark ALL THE TIME. Which is great in terms of horror. The entire book, every happy or calm scene, you're anxiously waiting for the other shoe to drop. You feel anxiety as you read because you know there's no happily ever after and something very bad will happen. Several times, actually. There are so many dark scenes. The negative of that though is that it's emotionally exhausting. I almost DNF'd this book multiple times because I was like, "maybe I'll just stop here, while they're still kinda happy", lol. Will I make it to the end of this series? I actually don't know. But I do really want to know how it concludes. I'm so horribly invested.
WOW Like always... wow. Thank you, just thank you Quil. You're a genius. (fangirling much) Can I just say (again) that this series is the first ever to make me feel such intense emotions. I'm so happy I found it and didn't give up on it. I can understand Elish more. I don't dislike him anymore. Lol Although.. I need more to understand why he did some things. But of course he's still a teenager at this point so I want to see what he's thinking as time goes by. What he really feels about Silas, Sanguine, his other brothers? I love Silas. I want him sane.. And I miss Perish. I wish he'd come back.. sane too. I want more Cephy and the twins! I don't know enough things about them and their life.! I want more babiiiieeees. They're so cute. I love Quil's descriptions, all his words. It's like I see them, hear them. And I want Jade. Will we have Jade? I mean, Elish's pov with Jade. It would take like, 3000 pages to get there it seems though.. lol. I don't mind at all. P. S. That ending was quite a cliffhanger! Can't wait for the next!!
This book was extraordinary and I couldn't put it down for a moment - only when I couldn't read, unfortunately. This is the best companion book I've read in the entire series so far, even though Sanguine is my favorite character. I can't understand why Silas treats Elish so badly... I didn't expect this. The plot was a bit predictable for me, but I really enjoyed it nonetheless! After I finished the book with a huge cliffhanger, I couldn't resist jumping straight into the sequel.
I find myself slowing down my reading rate. I don’t want to catch up with the end.
For those of us who (rightfully) think Elish is amazing, perfect, etc., this book is off the charts. Portions are amazingly hot, all of it written by the master, Quil.
This delves into the CRAZY brain of Elish Dekker and it needs no more words to make you scream and read this book in one go! This is AGAIN a phenomenal book in the series which explains why Elish is the way he is...and we love him dearly for it...I have never been accross a more worthy read.
