A Cry Among Men

Rate this book
Friday night, April 3, 2015 Don Wilcox came face-to-face with the devil. As Wall Street’s most prolific and respected Mergers & Acquisitions investment banker, scores of people loved him, but there were scads who disliked him because of his quiet confidence and recurrent success. Yet no one lugged around the bucket of jealousy, contempt, and hate towards Don like Scott Bradley - Jacobs, Baxter & Felton’s self-appointed golden boy. So to wield his power, after a night of self-indulgence, the soul of the devil awakened; and Scott Bradley did the unthinkable to destroy Don. Friday, April 3, 2015 marks the night of the most horrific act of hate and racism of our time; and the start of the most hellish fight of Don Wilcox’s life.

Picked up this literary work just a few days ago and the read is complete. It was purchased along with several other books and I have not so much as scanned the other books as of this writing. C. E. Brown has done a masterful job of creating this story's tapestry with his strong command of the english language. It is one of those works that continually draws you into relationship with the characters so much so that you feel a part of their journey as they almost become real to you. It demands your attention in such a way that you don't want to put it down, but if you must, you cannot wait to get back to the story. This story will be easily adaptable to movie and TV Series formats...especially after Oprah introduces it to her book club and Shonda Rhimes gets a hold of it. It has the potential to rival "House of Cards." Thank You to C. E. Brown for sharing his wonderful gift(s) with the world and we look forward to the sequel very soon.

The novel "A Cry Among Men" by C. Erskine Brown is a detailed account capturing the impediments confronted by an African American male (Don) in a predominately white work environment. The novel metaphorically addresses the vast number of successful African American males that continue to combat hate, racism, jealousy and all forms of adversity in the workplace and society in general; simply because of skin color.
It also illustrates the innate survival instincts of Don and many African Americans, the strength of our sister(s), Alicia his spouse and the ability of the family to close ranks to support one another when turbulent challenges unfold.
What a compelling, intriguing and captivating novel. I was even able to draw on each scripture preceding the chapter to help unlock the mysteries to come. Brilliant! For Mr. C. Erskine Browns first literary achievement, it was a masterpiece! Congratulations and keep writing.

I was given this book to read by a good friend/mentor of mine. My friend gave me the book and told me to read it, I had no prior history/knowledge of the book. The book captivated me from the very beginning. The author did a phenomenal job of developing characters and keeping social issues of today at the forefront. As a Caucasian male, I would love to have the opportunity to thank Mr. Brown for bringing us this book. I'd like to think I'm an individual who considers multiple perspectives and is sensitive to those around me, and have some understanding of the difficulties different ethnic groups face. However, I certainly needed this book. It was captivating, thought provoking, and most importantly gave me a new perspective, which gives me the tools to be a better person. Thank you Mr. Brown. I can't wait to read the next book!!

Wow. I am blown away!!!! This author did a masterful job of drawing me into the image of a positive Black family, a successful couple.....Then he shatters that image by showing how one moment could bring everything crashing down. This story was breath-taking. I will caution anyone who reads this book to keep a dictionary handy. The author used so many different words but they were fitting. Although he used various big words, the story is still easy to follow. Great read and I'm looking forward to more from this author.

Found out about this book from a friend of mine who recommended it as a must read. I was skeptical but bought it anyway. Started my read and couldn't put it down. Stopped reading at certain points to savor the content. I am an avid reader of all types of books and A Cry Among Men ranks with the best that I have read. Timely in its message and tense in its delivery. C Erskine Brown is a writer to be watched.

A intelligent faced paced novel that intertwines a mix of social, legal and racial influences in society today that satiates the reader in a way that makes you want more. The author creates a setting where you as the reader have to turn the page because you have to know what happens next.
I will look forward to the next novel by this Author:

It was as if the book was written for the sociopolitical climate currently gripping our country. Well written, intriguing, with an unexpected twist. The protagonist shows strength and resilience that few if any would, or could endure. The reader will be both shocked and anxiously awaiting the sequel.

Excellent read. My book club read the book and were intrigued! The author was gracious enough to do a Q& A with our book club and answered all of our questions regarding the characters and why the book was written. If you haven't read this book yet, pick up a copy. Happy reading!

4/5 Book Review: A Cry Among Men by C. Erskine Brown

The author has written a very dramatic and traumatic turn of events in the lives of a black family. Don Wilcox (African American) is a successful investment banker who works magic on Wall Street. As history will tell, “black people can’t never have NOTHING!” Meaning, that there are some white folks who harbor angst and racism towards black people who are successful, believing that it is white people’s god-given right to rid black people of things, life, and happiness because they believe black people shouldn’t have anything. Let alone, anything more than what they have. This debut novel explores what happens when an entitled white male invokes his racist mentality onto a successful black man, trying to do everything in his human power to break him. Conquer him. Mentally enslave him.

It is no secret that African Americans (in this case, males) continue to combat hate, racism, jealousy and all forms of micro and macro-aggressions, in the workplace and society in general; simply because of skin color.

The book also details how this black man processes the traumatic event in his life, and how he lives out the residuals of this trauma in his marriage and family relationship with this son.

The author prefaced this novel with a note to the reader warning the readers about the type of content that may be exposed to while reading. I also appreciated the bible verses that accompanied every chapter in the book, and how it tied into the content of the chapter, especially knowing that the reader has declared that he is a believer and devout Christian.

Although the content was quite disturbing, the author did a phenomenal job in the writing of this story. Very detailed, thought provoking, imaginative, and realistic in how the story unfolded. I was so emotionally invested in the characters that I didn’t want to put the book down.

The only critical thing I have to say about the book is the excessive use of large words sprinkled throughout the text and in conversations had by the characters in this book. I had to look up quite a large amount of words, which kind of distracted me from the story, but all the words were used in correct contexts. I was able to get past that and still enjoy the book, but I could have done without the large exorbitant word choices that were used here.

Overall, I rate this book a thrilling 4. It kept me on the edge of my seat, and I didn’t want to put the book down once the story got rolling.

It’s so suspenseful and jaw dropping. I was so completely engaged in this book and it’s characters. A Cry Among Men, touches on some very sensitive issues that are reminders and eye openers. I will be definitely reading it a second time. C. Erskine Brown. This is a masterpiece. Hope to see on the BIG SCREEN SOMEDAY.
