New Mahou Shoujo, new trouble, and a brother that I would love to see getting his dues. Really, that guy is horrible. :| Our idol girl also got what she had coming, and I hope she has calmed down now. The plan sounded so great, it is a shame what happens near the end. :| Good luck girls! Gruesomeness went up in this one.
i think i may have to finally actually drop this series :( in this volume they introduced a trans magical girl, which is great love the trans rep. but like i think its at least kinda good trans rep but the trans character does experience a lot of bullying and a lot of transphobia and idk if i can take that. i mean basically all the characters in magical girl site have gone through/are going through intense bullying cause of course they have to have some bad stuff happen to them to be able to join magical girl site. but just its too much for me. but at the same time i really wanna continue it. this series kinda reminds me of that expression where its like a car wreck or maybe its train wreck where like man its bad (idk and idc if this manga is viewed as objectively bad like idc if u like it or not its more in the way of all the bad triggering stuff that happens in here) but like man its grizzly but man you cannot look away.
anyway i am once again going to do my best to put tws for this volume intense bullying, transphobia, use of the t slur, intense violence/gore/blood, abuse, sexual abuse, pedophillia (in one panel i think but personally some other stuff seems like that too in this volume), self harm, taking pills (i think its still unclear if it is drugs or prescribed medication)
Dropped to one star because, while I’m fine with bad things happening to a trans character (I live in the real world, sadly), and people being awful (as is the nature of this author’s works), I was kind of grossed out that the author themselves refers to her as a he/him. If biology vs gender plays a part in the story, that’s fine— of course, we know the biology is a lot more complex now, but “wands are given to those with femme identities” is awesome!
The translation writes “he really thinks he’s female” and similar sentiments. It’s kind of shitty, even if the character decides later that she isn’t trans (there’s no shame in exploring your identity!).
I do like this author’s work, and the horror genre, and generally fucked up stuff like this. It just sucks that the author had to toss in some Word of God garbage when it comes to the trans girl character.*
*She may be trans, or she may be one of the other gender identities unique to Japan. English translations are known for making non-trans (but still queer) characters “trans,” when the words for them would be different. Otokonoko, for example!
I feel like this manga as a whole was edgy for the sake of being edgy. The overall premise was cool but Jesus was it dark and lowkey cringe. some of the characters like the brother were severely unlikeable. Overall 2/5
Quick note but as someone who has watched the anime the manga truly is so much more. Like so much is happening that does not happen in the series at all. I really like the drawing to tbh.
