Moving Onwards and Upwards

Rate this book
Pat had unanswered question and a void she couldn’t fill; Anna saw it coming and through it would destroy her; Luis didn’t know what to do except feel anger.

Being a teenager, going through your parents’ separation is tough—tougher when it makes you feel like it’s the end of the world. That’s exactly how Pat, Anna, and Luis felt but all of them kept moving onwards and upwards.

Three individuals, three walks of life, three stories of pain, strength, and love to remind you that everything will be okay; and that you are doing fine.

Got this from NBS OUTLET STORE sale, suggested by Julienne, and pinabasa sa akin ng pinsan kong si Jewel nang buksan niya 'to, dahil bagay daw sa akin... dahil produkto din ako ng broken family. But we are never broken, sabi nga naman ng libro na 'to.

This is just an easy read book, manipis lang kasi. Ang ganda ng kulay ng cover.

We have three stories here ng mga anak na may hiwalay na magulang, added to that are these 'aesthetic' typographie (which I found distracting, kaya tinapos ko muna yung stories saka ko isa-isang tiningnan yung typographies.)

Uhm, the stories are shallow. I mean, kulang ng laman. Kumbaga sa sabaw, wala siyang masyadong karne. Kumbaga sa maja blanca, wala siyang masyadong mais. The three stories also follow the same format: (1) sadness and feeling of being lost after discovering the separation, then (2) healing and acceptance. Kulang ng background story para mas maattach at madifferentiate mo ang experience ng tatlong characters.

Anyway, feeling ko masyado nang mahaba 'tong review ko para sa ganito kanipis na libro. So, ayern.

I got this from the Adarna House main bookshop in Quezon City. What drew me towards this book is the beautiful colors and typography. I am not a child of separation, so I can't say I can relate all that much to the characters or to their stories.

It was a really quick read, very straightforward. What I thought it lacked was a more detailed telling of how the characters were able to move forward and deal with the separation of their parents. There was always a sudden transition from the darker days to acceptance. It felt a bit preachy and idealistic for me...like the book is telling its readers that they'll just feel a lot better someday, essentially disregarding the whole process of getting there. I feel like the stories would have largely benefitted from being in a chunkier book with more personal storytelling: the characters could be better fleshed out, and the readers would be better able to grasp the whole process of "moving onwards and upwards".

What I loved about this book: The illustrations and typography were gorgeous, and I really appreciated how the author listed some resources that could provide comfort to children and teens going through this ordeal.

I haven't really read any modern Filipino authors but I'm glad I picked this up, it's a simple story but the illustrations enhanced the reading experience

Pretty straightforward book about separation, told in a way like someone's relating their personal story to you so it feels relatable enough. Illustrations and Colors used can be very attractive to its target audience (teens or kids experiencing the same situation).
