It took me a long time to get into the last book. A long time. The beginning was slow and kind of boring. Towards the end it really picked up and was exciting to read.
The previous books in this series were building up to this epic moment where the underdog characters from Brighton take back control from the narcissistic leaders of their city, and through unity they defeat the "twisted men" to save humanity.
And well, that's exactly what happens... But in my opinion, instead of it feeling like a fast-paced action-packed adventure where humanity and everything is at stake, it felt a little slow. It took a long time to really get into it.
For me, I think one of the main things which killed it a little was that a couple of previously intriguing characters were assigned more lacklustre roles to ensure no focus was drained from a few characters. These chosen main characters didn't seem to really be overly that likeable or personable, or not as likeable as a couple of characters which were binned off.
I started to get more into the story at the end when things were heating up and the fight was underway, but it seemed disappointing that the sequel follows a separate storyline and moves away from Brighton. I would have been quite interested to have seen whether Fitz remained in control or whether the academy took over, whether the cleansing continued and whether they invested more time into developing "tech magic".
Just my two cents anyway. Overall good series, very interesting zombie book concept.
The story took very unpredictable turns. Some of my issues about the numbers of monsters and such were answered. The story is very good and I just needed it to have a plausible foundation.
The fighting is terrible but the rebuilding of a society is inspiring. The best part and the only way forward for these people was to have women fighting for them and leading them.
The women depicted are real, conflicted, brutalized, tough, smart and brave just like women everywhere. Many are cowed but when given the option of death by acquiescence or the possibility of life and freedom by standing up, they choose to stand, organize, learn and sometimes die for their families and themselves.
The different threads come together and part again in fascinating ways. I realize that closure is just the start of the next chapter. The series has a lot of good insights but if you just want an engaging tale of misadventure and post-apocalyptic mayhem then you came to the right place. Thank you, B. Adair.
Good series, rushed ending, out of nowhere characters
This is my review for the whole Last Survivors series. Some potential spoilers ahead. With SIX long books you'd think the build-up to the ending would be better. It felt the authors dragged out every single book lot to rush the ending in the last ~30% of the last book. I generally liked the story and "some"characters as well as the authors' writing but wish they invested more into building up the end. I also disliked the constant addition of new characters out of nowhere or the "killing" of some main characters all of a sudden after seemingly being planned for main roles. Some characters (like Blackthorn) were completely changed all of a sudden. Overall not a bad series but the lack of proper build-up after so many books frustrated this reader.
Overall it was a decent ending. I'm not sure why I stuck with the series. I was interested in the characters but there grew to be too many to care about them all. And some of the detail was too much - I feel like the whole story could have been told in one epic novel or maybe two or three books, rather than spreading it out. The authors indulged themselves and the whole thing bordered on unbelievable. The cause of the spore made me angry - I read four books to find out about it and it just made me laugh. The whole series became ridiculous at that point. But still, I had cared enough about the characters to see their endings and was glad for the strong female presence that won the day, even if it felt predictable. A decent conclusion to a decent series but there are better books in the post-apocalyptic genre than these.
I'm kinda happy I found the series late in the game. I was able to read the whole series without waiting for the next book. AND now I get to continue right into The Ruins! I'm a happy, happy girl!
Love how the characters developed and found a place in my heart. I was very happy with the ending. No loose ends. Of course any good book will make you wonder what happens to the people who found their way into our hearts. Lucky you've continued the story on.
Thank you for the wonderful ride I've taken with the series so far. Your imaginations' are appreciated! Keep up the good work.
Well, now... that was funsies!!! I had a grand ol' time listening to this book while doing the mom jobs around the house. It's always funny to think that while you scrub a kid's bathroom clean on a quiet Thursday morning, you're listening to some demon slaying. This was a very fun series. It was 6 books and was about 50 hours of listening time. I listen at a 1.7 listening speed, which I refer to as Philly talking speed, and it dropped down to a more manageable listening time. I had a great time, though. Two thumbs up. Oh, and the amount of times someone peed their pants. I was laughing out loud... I'm a perpetual 10-year-old boy apparently, and I thought it was hilarious.
While I enjoyed the other books, these last two were just no fun. I didn’t care much about william after he went to the demons and I didn’t much care for the way it turned out. I was disappointed in Malora, obviously, the writers made her pretty unlikable. Also, Bray doing something as stupid as he did didn’t seem in line with his character; it seemed like a convenient way to get rid of a character that had outlived it’s usefulness.

by book 6 this series needs to end. I thought the final battle was disappointing. There should have been more story put into that and not in other areas of this book. But when you get to the end and think its over, well not exactly there is another series you can read to see what happens next. Not sure if I will be reading this next series. This was available on Kindle Unlimited otherwise if i had to buy the books i probably wouldn't have.
It took me no time to read this book. I loved how in the final book some of the smaller characters in the first books played a huge role in the end. Futz eventually won my heart at first when she appeared I was not so sure about her, but I love why the authors did with her character. I think this was personally the best book out of the series for me!
There was a battle to end all battles. As Fitz, Oliver, Beck and Ivory returned to Brighten and started seeking new ways to govern, Bray, William and Kirby struck out in a different direction. Was a good last book and a good lead in to a new series.
As I loved book 5 of this series book 6 was not one of the best for me. Got a bit dragged out and I would have preferred the moment supreme been longer. Now it was all how some reacted before the struggle would begin. I thought the story of Bray and cohort quite boring.
Anyway. Glad I did read the books.Perfect for quick easy reading.
This was the best book of the batch. You don't get attached to the characters because most of them are not worth getting attached to or developed enough to get to know. Most characters are pretty shallow.
However, the build up of setting, backstory and characters finally get to a place where the action makes the story interesting from start to finish.
Second time I read this series in 5 years and, still, one of the best post-apocalyptic one I ever read! I must have read near than a thousand books on that style alone in my life (if not, I'm probably not far, as I read between 100-150 books a year, depending of the length) and it's still at the top of my best of!
The sixth book doesn’t seem to close off serious pretty well and open the door to the next set of series. This feels like a re-write by publishers after the original release of the book. More like a ghost writer stepped in for the last few chapters for some reason.
Loved the ending to the main series. A great adventure that you just can't put down from the beginning. And it's not over yet! You can follow Bray William and others in The Ruins! Can't wait to start!
The Last Conquest is the final book in The Last Survivors Series. Piperbrook and Adair wrote a perfect ending to this series. If you have started reading this series and enjoyed it you won’t be disappointed with the ending.
I had a lot of mixed opinions on the series, but overall I really enjoyed it. Their was a goo build up for the final battle, and it was not a disappointment, Zombies, gory and Justice. The paced was just right and I loved how it ended. 3.5 starts
I am so happy with the way this series ended. I have really grown to love these characters and I have high hopes for their future. I definitely recommend this series, the story lines and arcs and character builds were very well done.
5 star ending to a 5 star series. Thoroughly enjoyed every book, and the ending was satisfying without being cliche. The characters were well written, the settings easily imagined, and the plot was thought out thoroughly. Going to read the sequel series now!
I blasted through all six books in this series. It kept me entertained and distracted. I do want to know how the town fares after the end of book six, but I'm not sure that series has been written. I know I can follow Bray and William in another series, but I'm less interested in them.
So sad to see this series end! I've enjoyed these books very much and I'm super excited about the new follow up series coming soon! Bobby Affair and T.W. Piperbrook are both amazing authors and I definitely plan to check out more of their work! Sean Runnette was a perfect choice for narrator. I hope he will narrate for the new series as well.
I love this series takes us to future where most knowledge has been lost and forgotten! It reads like history and fantasy both , very exciting characters and plot!
