Kids enjoy silly and sometimes tolerate sillier, but this book's premise is so silly that I don't think most young readers I know would be much entertained. Zack's substitute teacher bears a remarkable resemblance to a werewolf, and her devouring of his homework is, as far as he is concerned, yet another clue that she is one. Zack tries to get to the bottom of the woman's uncanny resemblance to this mythological creature. He has some completely unreasonable exchanges with the school principal, who threatens to suspend Zack for telling a lie about the teacher. (Would that it were so! Being suspended for lying?! In many schools, kids can swear like troopers at teachers with nary a consequence...and even some very young kids know this.) I intensely disliked the stereotypical portrayal of the principal as a sort of enemy that Zack's dad needs to defend him from. Furthermore, Zack's visiting his supposedly sick teacher--who is described as being "hazy" (she burns incense and plays sitar music) and who frankly comes across as stoned--is even more improbable.
The kids I know do like Greenburg's My Weird School series, but if this book is any sign of what the rest of the Zack Files series is like, I don't recommend it.
