Dark Feather

Rate this book
I had two choices in life—to be a breeder, or to be a soldier. To create life, or to destroy it.

I had chosen poorly.

The Earth’s thermostat is all but frozen, leaving two opposing factions, the Pennas and the Cyans, to spread throughout the forbidding tundra of a planet forever cast in a dark and deadly ice age, seeking only power and control now that the world has become a frozen ball of ice.

I was one of the Penna…until I could take no more. Science had almost destroyed our world, and I foolishly helped them continue in this quest. So I left and walked alone on the icy land until the Cyan found me.

Until HE found me.

Commander Rigby Moss was the leader of the Cyan army, and I was now his captive. Forced to learn the art of submission, as well as the art of war, I became his soldier. From the moment I was captured, I became a mighty warrior amongst a cast of men.

But I had a curse that haunted me daily. I was nothing but a mutant who possessed the answer for warmth, waterproofing, and ultimately, survival—feathers. They marked my skin, forever branding me as a Penna no matter how hard I tried not to be. I hated them. They shamed me. And although the feathers kept me alive, I was dead on the inside.

But I was HIS. And he would do whatever it took to battle my demons as we battled the enemy.

Could a dark and broken woman come to terms with friendship, trust, forgiveness and love? Could a woman taught to remain strong at all times, learn to submit? Could I let go of the darkness, the hate, the death, and all I knew? Was it possible to truly be his DARK FEATHER?

USA Today Bestselling Author Alta Hensley brings you an erotic and dark post-apocalyptic story that transports you to a gritty, icy and ruthless world.

Disclaimer: This is a standalone novel, and is a greatly revised, expanded and newly edited version of a previous book entitled 'Lady Templar' by the same author. Dominance, submission, and erotic discipline elements are weaved throughout, including breath play. If such material offends you, please do not purchase this book.

Alta Hensley is a NYT & USA Today bestselling author of dark romance where the villain always gets the happily ever after.

Twisted, clever, and occasionally unhinged, her books deliver morally gray anti-heroes, sharp-tongued heroines, and happily ever afters that taste even sweeter after a little ruin. With a signature blend of grit, wit, and heat, Alta’s stories prove one thing: Villains deserve love too.

Alta lives on the foggy coast of Oregon with her husband, two daughters, and a pair of dogs who think they’re in charge. When she’s not writing redemption for the irredeemable, she’s walking the coastline or sipping craft beer in eccentric little bars that feel like they belong in her books.

I'm giving this 2 stars simply for the editing. It was a well-written book, but in a word, it was boring. After reading the blurb, I thought it was an interesting premise. It was, at the very least, a unique concept and one I hadn't read before, but it wasn't particularly dark nor was it all that erotic.

The world is split into two factions--the Pennas and the Cyans. The Pennas believe in science and have genetically enhanced themselves to adapt to the frozen wasteland that is now earth. They also look down upon displays of emotion in any form--no crying, no love--these are weaknesses and serve no purpose. The Cyans, however, are a bit more human if you will. They still love; they still feel. And I could totally get on board with this if it wasn't contradicted.

The two main characters are Tudor, the FMC who is Penna, and Rigby, the MMC who is a Cyan...

"Penna do not allow emotion to come into play. Revenge is most certainly an emotion..." but only a few sentences later, she says, "I grew up seeing a side of the Penna that I hated..."

Umm, last I checked, hate is an emotion too.

Don't get me wrong, I understand the rest--the later tears, her falling in love--it all makes sense as character growth after she meets up with the Cyans and Rigby, but she's talking about when she was still with the Penna. This doesn't make sense.

Then there was just the story in general. The two sides fought, and we're even told why they were fighting, but it doesn't really feel like all that much is happening. It's more like reading a newspaper article without much emotion. Even scenes that were supposed to be powerful were lacking the oomph necessary to hold my attention.

Then there was stuff that just didn't make sense at all. Earth is a frozen wasteland--nothing but ice. Where is Tudor getting the wood to make her arrows? How are they so easily digging the graves?

I could forgive all of this if the sex scenes were hot and plentiful, but the first one doesn't even happen until 76% into the book, and the dialogue is stilted and awkward when it does. There's some spanking, and he talks a lot about how she needs to submit to him, but that's it--it's a lot of talk.

"Release the shame. The discipline has erased all your wrongdoing, and it has set us right again. Please no longer feel ashamed."

I haven't read many sci-fi/paranormal romance books, so I'm no expert, but I rather enjoyed this read. To better understand the reasoning behind my rating, I thought I'd list everything I liked (or not) in point form.

Dislikes (let's get these out of the way first)
* the lack of Rigby's POV. Although I liked Tudor's character well enough, I felt that Rigby's perspective would further enlighten me on the dynamics of their relationship. As it stood, the story was too one-dimensional
* the lack of expansion. Time passes (no idea how much time) behind the scenes and some really interesting events occur but we, the reader, are left in the dark as to the details
* the contradictions. For example, it is explained that the Penna do not value emotion of any kind, feel no emotion of any kind, they are downright emotionless, but Tudor went on to say how much she 'hated' the life of the Penna. She even exacted revenge against the one who killed her mother (before meeting Rigby and learning emotion and falling in love). Dare I say, that was emotional?

Likes
* the battle scenes. Though short and not as gruesome as I thought they would be, the author did an incredible job with putting me right in the middle of each battle. These scenes were awesome!
* the relationship and love development between Rigby and Tudor. The author made their growth a thing of wonder.
* how surprised I was by how HOT some of the sex scenes were. Totally unexpected!
* honestly, the entire premise of the story was brilliant. It just need to be fleshed out more

Would I read from this author again? Heck ya!!

MASTER THE ICE

I enjoyed this fascinating post-apocalyptic tale with two warring factions, the Penna and Cyan. The Penna take a more scientific approach, and have created medicines from the life-giving blue-green algae, and even inject it giving them feathers for warmth from the ice age that now encompasses the earth. The Cyan use the blue-green algae as a nutritional food. These two factions are at war, with bloody battles often being fought. Will there ever be peace on earth again or will life only consist of surviving and war?

The plot has Tudor Dane, an archer, former daughter of a general in the Penna army, deciding she is so sick of constant battles and killing, that she just wants to walk away from it all and live in a village in peace. War, death, and destruction have finally snapped her, and she just starts walking away from her Penna warriors. Walking directly into the midst of Cyan warriors, they capture her and believe she is a spy. During the next battle, she fights with the Cyan against her own people, the Penna, and gains a place among the soldiers, even if they are weary of her. “Give me time, and give me the freedom to fight.” “We fight. We stay strong. We stay together.”

The story is much more than war, it is a way of life, wanting change, and so tired of war. For Commander Rigby Moss, Tudor may be his captive, and fighting alongside his men, but there is also admiration and the beginning of a relationship. Tudor must learn to submit entirely to Rigby, even though she swore she would submit to no one, with time, she freely offers him her submission. “Giving up control made me feel more in control than ever before.” “I honor you. I value you. I respect you so very much.” It is a love story of two people, from different ways of life, coming together, fighting together, falling in love with each other, and the passion and chemistry from that love will one day change a nation.

I read this as part of a romance reading challenge, and it's been my favorite book so far. It's well-written, has a real plot in addition to the romance, and the story arc is well-plotted. I had a little trouble accepting the ice-world warring (Where are they getting their food and clothing? Gas for their war-snowmobiles?), but the focus of the story was the erotica, not the science fiction, so it was something to just set aside. Definitely delivered on the erotica. I will be looking for other titles by this author.

This book is set in a post-apocalyptic world, it's a new ice age and there are 2 factions living on planet earth both thinking they have the right ideas.

Tudor is from the feathers group, I'm calling them that as they have feathers, they get injected in childhood with an algae type serum and develop feathers and these protect them from the cold - they're not covered in feathers like a bird but in certain areas they have small feathers. Tudor is a warrior, she had a choice breeder or warrior and she chose well as she is a strong warrior. She has been happy to kill the enemy until one day she can't do it anymore and deserts them.

Rigby is an army leader, his strong and just wants peace but he has to continue protecting his people. When he first discovers Tudor he belittles her and humiliates her in front of his men, but takes her in. Seeing a spark in her, he is intrigued.

The characthers are both very strong willed, Rigby sees himself as a dom and wants to see Tudor submit. He doesn't do a lot of breaking sexually he generally spanks her early in the book.

I found them an entertaining couple and liked it when they got more sexually intimate and grew closer emotionally. I did find Rigby amusing as he wanted to protect her honour and wouldn't make love before they committed BUT would do everything else possible!

There is more to this book than romance, there is a war going on and danger is all about in the battle scenes.

I enjoyed this read and liked the ending.

Breeder or soldier..... what would you choose? I'm not sure what I would chooses but from the start of the description I was in need of reading this book. Add in a hot commander and post apocalyptic storyline and I was excited!!!

The heroine was tough and I loved that she wasn't one to back down. She stood up to the men and even though it was hard on her, she truly proved her self.

The hero, of you can call him that was a jerk, but it was very understandable. He had an army to lead and I think he did a great job..

The world this author created was different and amazing. I was hooked and really interested in seeing more. This was shorter then I wanted it to be. It was perfectly detailed though.

I can't give too many details about this book because it's one of those books that needs to be experienced.

Overall, I really liked the setting of a frozen world with war happening, and I hope that ending left it open for more. The characters while different were really like able. 4 stars #2OCCJD

Brrrrr! The landscape was so well discribed that I felt cold. The heroine was disillusioned by the unnecessary bloodshed and left the bloodthirsty group who loved to kill. She walked through the icy landscape to join a less bloodthirsty group and becomes the first woman warrior and has to prove herself to all the soldiers that a women was as good or better. It was obvious that much research was done by Alta Hensley as the storyline unfolded. Alta delved into the emotions of the characters with amazing insight as to their thoughts and actions in this dark apocalypse world. There was romance, violence, suspense, danger, erotic sex and some spanking and submission. I was given this Advanced Reader Copy by the publisher for an honest review and the thoughts and opinions are mine.

I don't really know what to think of this book.

It had great potential. It had great bones. It really should have been "more" ....

but it wasn't.

It was disappointing to say the least. I don't even know how to rate it (which is why I haven't).

It had action - but was boring.

It had dialogue - but was boring.

It had a romance - but was twisted. Seriously? Rigby's idea of Tudor's "virtue" needs to reexamined. Every time her "virtue" was alluded to, I ROLLED MY EYES. TWICE.

I didn't hate this one but I didn't like it? I don't know. I'm going to sit on it for a while and try to figure it out. These are just my initial impressions.

A middle of the road story for me. Some reviews say this is unique but really it is just another story of a girl that doesn't fit in and a man that thinks spankings will tame her. All the usual struggle with surrender and submission for a first timer blah blah, same type of man giving "lessons", the alpha gone soft over a different type a girl, the odd pretty girl he must possess etc. The same thing is missing too, real connection. However, it was nice to see a story of this genre that didn't jump right to the act of sex but actually spent time building up the suspense and anticipation of what the next encounter would bring.

This is my first book by Alta Hensley. I thought it was very different from most books I've read so far. In a world of ice and snow, war is fought and love on opposing sides is found. Rigby and Tudor were lovely main characters. I loved her strength as a fighter. Yes in ways there could have been more something in the book. But overall it was well done. I'm interested in seeing how her other books in the different genres she writes play out.

This book had an excellent premise, but I think it was poorly executed. I felt detached from the characters and couldn't always follow the plot line since the flow of time wasn't well described.

Dystopian novels usually aren't my first choice, and I will admit it took a few chapters to get into this one. However I found myself enjoying the development of a strong female lead who realizes that submission doesn't mean weakness, it's strength.

All of the world is ice/snow covered. The main characters are Tudor and Rigby. There are 2 sides the Penna and the Cyan and the battle is over
blue algae and how they perceive how to use it. One side uses it as nutrients and the other for research. The Penna's have an interesting feature
of feathers which keep them warm in their cold climate. This book is intriguing and definitely a novel that keeps your attention throughout the book.I I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

A post apocalyptic stunning romance

I adored this book! Rigby and Tudor were both equally strong characters, each in their own right, but together they were explosive. The author has created a harsh apocalyptic world that, due to detailed descriptions, I could easily imagine. This new world, in turn, is harsh, dangerous, unpredictable and makes survival a struggle so it is just that much sweeter when love is found. This is not a wine and roses romance, it's so much more! You can feel the depth of their emotions, from both Riley and Tudor, and you just can't help cheering for them. I absolutely loved the ending. Okay, no spoilers from me, buy the book and settle in for an epic journey!

A story of love amidst war, and freezing temperatures. A war for survival rages on between the Penna and the cyans. Those with feathers and those without. In this an archer leaves her side as she tires of killing only to be captured by the enemy and fall for the man in front of her.

Good story.

I loved the concept of this book. It was a bit strange but a nice take on the world beginning its end. We start our journey with Tudor a mercenary who has been growing tired of war and death and the killing.

Wandering away from war we soon find her faces against the opposing side of the war. But what you learn is she is a woman... something that seems is uncommon in the time. Not believing she has chosen to leave Penn's where she comes from....it seems a bit fishy. I admit I wondered if she really wanted to leave everything behind.

You later learn why she left and more about the war. A well plotted story line with an extremely realist outlook on our future. Amazingly developed characters and twists you think you see coming before they arrive but you actually don't. I am giving this book 4.7 out of t stars. A wonderful quick read with a HEA....strong leading lady. A touch of sex but not done distasteful or overly used as filler. Cannot wait to see what else Alta will bring in the coming future.

A sweet love story in the midst of war

This was a good book to read. It was set in a future Earth that has seen more war than ever and turned into an icy wasteland. It has action and adventure with a side of spanking punishment added into the mix. Very well written and a quick read for me once I had time to devote to it.

Odd, yet interesting.

Tudor Dane is a Penna. In an ice-covered dystopian world, humans are split into two factions: the Penna and the Cyan. The Penna believe the cure-all algae should be used for science, while the Cyan believe it is best used as a food source. War rages through the lands and pits both groups against each other in a seemingly endless battle. When Tudor decides she has had enough bloodshed, she walks away from her role at a Penna mercenary. Rigby Moss is a Commander in the Cyan army. When Rigby and his troops stumble upon Tudor killing her should be their first thought, yet they decide to keep her. Dark Feather follows Tudor and Rigby as they discover a common respect, love, and a will to end the carnage.

The premise of this book is really intriguing. I loved the 'science' behind the dystopian landscape and the use of feathers for warmth. I also liked the chemistry between Tudor and Rigby. Where this book fell short was in it's delivery. While it was well written, I hated that Tudor leaves the Penna behind because she's tired of the bloodshed, only to join the Cyan army and continue the bloodshed on a different team. She states in the beginning that when given the choice between being a fighter or a breeder, she chose wrong. She's then given the same choice again with the Cyan and she chooses the same path! It makes no sense and she never explains it other than saying she was born to fight. Then why leave the Penna in the first place? A different explanation for her desertion would have been a better way to start this book. It also skipped ahead repeatedly from one battle to the next that it left little time to actually get to know any of the characters other than Tudor. There was no depth to anyone else, including Rigby.

What could have been a wonderful love story and great way to include a moral of equality and respect between 'races' fell flat in the midst of gory battles and sexual spankings.

The world in this book is very different than the one we’re living in right now. The population has been split up in 2 populations, the Penna and the Cyan. They have other believes and fight against each other. Many people have been killed during the war.

Tudor was a warrior and a Penna, until one day she decides that it’s wrong and she just leaves. Penna is searching for her and they want her dead, because she’s considered as a traitor. Tudor meets a group of Cyan and their leader Rigby. Cyan normally kill any Penna, but Rigby decides to take Tudor home with them and use her as a slave. Tudor will have proof that she really left Penna.

I didn’t love nor hated this book. I love the cover and the meaning of the title. The book was very hot sometimes. I liked Rigby and Tudor. Tudor is an amazing warrior. She works hard every day and even an injury can’t keep her from fighting. Tudor and Rigby fight together against the Cyan. They love to fight together. Rigby is overprotective and a dominant.

This isn't the type of book I typically read, but I really enjoyed it! The earth has descended into a permanent ice age, and there are basically two groups who are at war to control the earth and the most precious resource, the blue green algae, the Penna and the Cyans.

Tudor is the main character, a female archer, a strong fighter, she chose to be a warrior rather than a breeder, and she's developed a reputation for being the best archer despite her sex. When she decides she's tired of fighting this endless war and killing innocents, she walks away from the Penna, knowing the penalty for desertion is death.
As luck would have it, she walked right into the arms of Rigby, a Cyan commander. What follows is a fight for respect, trying to find a place for herself in the arms of the enemy, and learning things about herself she never knew.

At its heart, this is a beautiful love story. Tudor drives Rigby crazy, he tries to teach her that submission can make you stronger, they try to find a way to make an unlikely pairing between sworn enemies work.It has some hot, sexy scenes, and some sweet heartwarming scenes. I highly recommend it!

I received an ARC for a free and honest review. Dark Feather is my first book by Ms Hensley. I thoroughly enjoyed this read. The story takes place in a very different Earth than we are used to. The Earth is a frozen tundra where a blue green algae is the most important resource, whether for nutrition or science. The world is at war with two groups of humans fighting. The Penna, who believe science is everything, and the Cyan who are fighting for food and to keep their humanity. Tudor, a Penna warrior, walks away from the Penna battle. Rigby and his Cyan warriors capture her and have to decide her fate. Can they use her to fight their enemy and win? Do they execute her? Can the trust her? I love Tudor's character. She started as a hardened Penna warrior. It was wonderful to watch her slowly transform from all warrior into a female who also happens to be a warrior. With the help of Rigby she gains softness, confidence, and learns she can love as fierce as she fights. The tension between Rigby and Tudor was there from the beginning and was sweet and sexy. The descriptions in this book were wonderful and definitely made me thankful I have never lived through the horrors of an ice age. I enjoyed the secondary characters as well. Rigby's cousin, especially, brought a bit of lightness to the dark themes of war and death. The conclusion to this story was perfect. The epilogue, for me, was especially moving. I would definitely recommend this book for anyone looking for a good read.

A Fierce Battle of Love

Author Alta Hensley does an amazingly, outstanding job creating a World we don't really want to think of. The Book Dark Feather is fierce battle of love that keeps you captivated through out the read. You actually learn from this book.

Daughter of a Penna General, Tudor Dane is the Best Archer around. Brought up to ignore emotions and keep them at bay Tudor master's her craft as a soldier. She fights to kill with a goal to annihilate, but something in her breaks in a battle and she finds herself questioning her allegiance. She is captured by Cyan General Rigby Moss and his men. Obviously the hate between the two is palpable you can taste in and cut it!

This is not the type of book I usually like. Don't get me wrong I like all kinds of genre but dystopian fantasy is not something I really am into. That being said I really liked tyhis book. It was a perfect blend of Dom/sub erotic romance within a dystopian setting. It was well read and I thoroughly enjoyed and recommend it for a change of pace if this isn't usually your thing. I'm not really sure what to make of this story. It is very different from my usual genre as I don't read a huge amount of sci-if/apocalyptic romance books. I can see that this story has great potential, but for me, I just didn't "get it"!

It is written really well and I quite liked Rigby's character. Although I felt I'd have liked some of his POV. This is written entirely from Tudors POV, but I feel, as two opposing sides in the war they were fighting (to an extent), Ribgy's POV would have added a lot.

I struggled a bit with Tudor and didn't really understand the choices she made. I didn't full connect with her, which I think would have helped me enjoy the story more.

The story flowed relatively well and I guess if you read a lot of this genre then you may well have absolutely loved it. There was a good amount of suspense and the battle scenes were great!

This is the first book I have read from this author, and I would definitely read other books by her in the future.

This book is very well written, but it just isn't my cup of tea. I did enjoy it but I'm not into the whole fighting to the death, one group made for brwedding one group injected with something that gives you feathers. Other than the weird factor this was an well written book.

Very intense story that features a very strong warrior female, Tudor, that is challenged to set aside her entire life’s belief system that to show any emotion or submission means that she is weak. This is her journey through learning that emotions, love and submission is not weaknesses at all, in fact, she’s finds herself a stronger person once she embraces those aspects of her personality. I love that Rigby, the main male character, is a strong warrior that is not shy in expressing his feelings to Tudor and showing her that to submit to him provides much pleasure and pain. He’s very protective and Tudor finds herself receiving some harsh punishments when she risks her life and causes him to worry. Great story that is set in a very tough and challenging environment but still has a feeling of hope and faith running through it. Please note, I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for this my honest review.

I do not typically read sci-fi/ paranormal book, but this story was enjoyable. I would have liked to have some of the story from the hero's perspective and I didn't find the story to be very dark or erotic, but it was an easy read.
