ABSOLUTELY RECOMMEND READING THIS FIRST!! Free on Wattpad!
I honestly HATED Olivia in just friends and I didn't really like her here either, BUT I didn't like many of the other characters in Just Friends but after reading ONE NIGHT I realized why they acted the way they did and the history there. I felt more sympathetic towards many of them and even Olivia. In my opinion reading this first makes Just Friends make way more sense and it's a disservice NOT to read this beforehand.
I think this prequel made me dislike Livvy even more. I read Just Friends before reading this and I think by doing so it was more bearable. Livvy just really got under my skin with the way she treated Dustin. He deserves someone that would cherish him not Livvy who just wants him when it's convenient for her. I also don't understand Emily. Cannon treated her good but yet she didn't want that. I'm beginning to think these girls are so immature and don't know what they have right in front of them that would treat them right and loved.
I can't rate it. This was a complete waste of my time. All the characters cheated on each other. Em was evil incarnate. Dustin was a douche and a tool. He was supposed to be so in-love with her best friend Olivia but he had sex with Emily. Olivia is a doormat and an idiot for believing and forgiving Emily all the time. Ryan is a major a**ho** and thinks the world revolves around him. Everybody in this book are awful and it hits every cheating, betrayal trigger.

I really enjoyed reading this. Gives us more insight about each characters. I really liked reading more about Cannon because he's not a main character in the series so seeing that side of him just gave us more than just the surface we see in the books. In the books, we just see him as a jock who likes to sleep around, but in this book, you see a guy who wants more and is really protective of the people he cares about. You see a bit of what his family is and what they represent for him. I really liked that side of Cannon and I wish we could get more of that.
And even though Emily is still not my favourite character, I can't help but feel for her. She's obviously need to feel appreciated; to be someone's #1, but she's not doing it the right way. Reading about her through the whole book, you just get her a little bit more yet, I feel like there's a lot we still don't know and I'm hoping we might get a glimpse of it in the third book. I really liked the person she was whenever she was with Cannon even if it never lasted because she wasn't able to handle that kind of kindness.
Olivia and Dustin both were much like in the series; he wants her; she's confused; he's clingly; she's scared to take the next step. It could be annoying, but it just made me realize even more how wrong they were for one another. At least, at that moment of their life... who knows what could happen in the future. If you have read Just Friends and More than Friends, you see where their relationship has headed, but with a third book coming, who knows what could happen. Monica could surprise us and give us a whole new future we didn't expect for either of them.
And Amanda and Tuttle... They are still my favourite. I am rooting for them and I can't wait for the next book to see how it will all end for them. They both need a happily ever after and I hope the author is going to give them that opportunity... together. I don't want them apart hahaha They have a connection that I envy and I want it to last.
It was a quick read, but it was interesting to see a little more about each characters. I'm looking forward to reading the third book because I'm hoping that we get to catch more of where the characters are heading; to read more about them and maybe change my mind about certain ones.
High school drama at it's peak!!! Oh boy, were we like that back then? As far as introductory stories go, nonetheless, it was quite succesful in making me care for the characters enough to want to learn their wareabouts.
This is a prequel novella that lets us peek into the lives of several teenagers whom I assume we will get to know better in the first book of the series.
It takes place during a party at the beginning of summer. A group of friends have a night where choices are made and I'm unsure as of yet what consequences those choices will have.
Personally, I prefer to read the prequels prior to the series in order to read things chronologically. This novella hooked me though and I will be moving on to book one!
This novella is all about teenage drama. I have been reading adorable contemporary romance novels all week so I went in search of something steamier. And this one definitely left me feeling hot and bothered. Haha.
The entire novella occurs during a single night at a high school party thrown by the most popular rich boy in school. The entire book is completely saturated with nothing but teens hooking up and drinking at a party or unrequited (or somewhat unrequited) teenage love. Or lust. Maybe both. Probably both. While all the drama concerning the teens' sex lives and romantic lives was entertaining enough, I was disappointed by a lack of other plot points of substance. It touches upon a rich boy whose parents aren't around much and a teen girl that is focused on partying too hard and giving her goodies to all the boys in school, but that was pretty much it. There was also a boyfriend caught cheating on his girlfriend with her best friend, but I suppose that falls into the relationship drama category.
I actually found that the most interesting characters aren't even those that are featured in the synopsis of the first book. I adored Jordan (Tuttle) and Amanda's part of the story. I hope that there is more of it in the first book. The other characters were okay, but they didn't interest me as much. I did love the different POVs throughout the story.
I guess that I won't put too much weight into this review since the novella is about a one-night event introducing the characters in the series. I will say that it was entertaining, definitely had its steamy moments, and introduced the characters well enough. I definitely wasn't to see what happens next.
I enjoyed the prequel story, and think if I find the first book in the Kobo Store with a good price- I'll buy it. This was my first Monica Murphy book. The plot is interesting and it was just what I need to get myself out of my reading slump so thank you!
I enjoyed Amanda's and Jordan's story best. But I'm also interested in reading what will happen next with Emily, Dustin and Livvy.
It's like little kids having drama about sex and relationships when they act like children. Won't be buying the first book. Little kids having sex and little kid drama isn't for me. Very childish characters and very annoying.
I loved them in Just Friends and I loved them in One Night, Amanda and Tuttle that is. I'm in love with the two of them and I can't wait to read their story.
This prequel is all kinds of hot mess!! And I need more! more! {cue evil laughter} Lol. Some of the characters got on my damn nerves.. Dustin (stuck in friends zone! In love with Olivia) Emily (wannabe slut) and Olivia (good girl but a frickin selfish tease) Cannon (football jock with a heart of gold) but I want to read more about Amanda/Jordan (Tuttle) I'm so intrigued by their story.. Off to read 2nd book....
I read Just Friends yesterday and loved it. I actually meant to read One Night beforehand but let's just say that it didn't happen. It still totally worked out since I wanted some more from this group.
One Night follows six teenagers that all end up at Tuttle's house the night before Olivia goes off to her dad's house for the summer. Olivia just wants to hang out with her two best friends, Emily and Dustin before she leaves but they have other plans. Emily wants to get drunk and find a hook-up while Dustin wants to be alone with Olivia. Over the last year their three-way friendship has been changing and Olivia is afraid when she gets back, it will only be worse.
This prequel is not only about them though. You will get to meet Amanda, Cannon, and Tuttle as well. I got to know them in Just Friends but not in the same way. I loved Amanda and Tuttle's banter in Just Friends and I knew there had to be more to the story and now I know what is up with them. I love them even more for it. And, I only get a glimpse of Cannon in Just Friends and he wasn't exactly a favorite. He was a jackass. But I got to know him more and he grew on me. I hope to see him more in future books.
Overall...it's one crazy ass night of hook-ups and get-to-know-you's. I know this is a prequel but I think I enjoyed it more since I read it after Just Friends. I think it made Just Friends more suspenseful because of not knowing all the characters involved and their backgrounds were at the party.
WOW!! What a prequel!!! I loved that Monica introduced us to all the characters in this series. I couldn't put it down!!
I am a sucker for angst, and there was the perfect amount in this one. I'm so anxious to see what happens to the crew and I'll be consuming the other books in the series.
I had read quite a lot of long books and fancied a shorter read, so when I came across this one on my kindle. I thought I would give this one a go. I really like the cover and it certainly fits the book giving it a contemporary romantic feel. There is a “warning” with this book as there is adult content. To be honest with what programmes show on tv these days I don’t let the warning put you off. I would say older teens as a minimum age so I would probably remove the YA label and add NA instead.
The book is about a group of friends who each have their own problems, thoughts and romantic notions. The party at Jordan Tuttle’s house is the main venue of what goes on in the book. We meet Dustin and Olivia first as they are going to a party. Olivia immediately wants to know where their other constant friend, Emily is. When Dustin explains she is meeting them at the party she is a little shocked as the arrangement had been for them all to go to the party together. Though the three are all good friends, lately the “friend” label has been changing a little for Dustin and Olivia and they have been in Olivia’s words “messing about” a little. Olivia is worried that if they change from a friendship to a boyfriend/girlfriend relationship and things go wrong it will spoil everything. The whole is it more than a friendship relationship is further complicated by the fact Olivia sets off to her fathers home the day after the party for the rest of the summer. Olivia has grown to hate going to her fathers but her when her mum points out it will probably the last time, she will go for some time due to going to university etc. Olivia caves and agrees to go.
Everyone that’s anyone and everyone else too, is at Jordan Tuttle’s party. His parents are away a lot and his parties are somewhat famous or perhaps that should be notorious. The house is palatial inside with en suite rooms, a hot tub, swimming pool and more to be used. Jordan is a love them and leave them kind of guy but when an opportunity of something with a girl he would like more from arises should he take it or not. Can he get Amanda to trust him?
Emily is at the party when Dustin and Olivia arrive, she’s already had plenty to drink, or could she be high too? Emily tries to play up to Dustin, but he only has eyes for Olivia. Even though Emily is quite literally offering herself on a plate to anyone and everyone. Emily is becoming known as the girl that gives good “blow-jobs” to whoever shows her attention.
It’s as if there’s something weird in the air or the drinks because Cannon is also usually a love and leave them guy too, but he turns out to be a fairly sweet guy who doesn’t want to take advantage of a drunk Emily. In fact, he prevents others from taking advantage of her too.
The book is told from the different points of view of the party goers. The majority of the book deals with the party itself and what goes on and it’s fall out. There is also a smaller section that occurs when Olivia returns from her father’s home. It seems Emily has become very “popular” whilst Olivia has been away. There is also an introduction of a new character called Ryan who is a rather confident, if not over confident new pupil at their school. When Olivia meets him at Emily’s house, he is somewhat over familiar with her, and actually flirts with her despite knowing of her fledgling relationship with Dustin. Though Dustin does seem to have attracted the attention of a persistent girl whilst Olivia has been missing over the summer.
I enjoyed reading the novella. Monica Murphy created some great characters and I would like to read more and learn more about them.
My immediate thoughts upon finishing the book were Really enjoyed reading about the different characters. Definitely adding book one to my “Want To Read” Wishlist Hope to catch up with the characters that were at Jordan Tuttle’s party too.
To sum up the major parts of the book all happen at a party full of teens with crazy mixed up emotions and pre-fixed ideas about one another and a lot of alcohol and perhaps drugs too. I did enjoy the book a lot and would certainly like to read more. I think this prequel novella makes a great introduction to what could be a potentially great series!
I received a free e-copy through NetGalley from the publicists at Social Butterfly PR.
It’s the night before Olivia is leaving to spend most of the summer at her dad’s house, and she’s determined to make the most of it with her two best friends, Dustin and Emily. They’re meeting Em at a party at legendary football player (and bad boy) Jordan Tuttle’s house, but on the way there, Dustin makes it clear he wants to be more than friends. Meanwhile, Amanda is looking for her boyfriend at the party when she walks in on him with her best friend. Angry and upset, she finds herself alone with Jordan, who is–strangest of all–being nice to her. If one thing is certain, it’s that it will be a night Livvy and her friends will never forget. Trigger warnings: sexism, womanizing, sexual harassment, bullying, drug/alcohol use. NSFW content.
I mistakenly thought that since I’d enjoyed Murphy’s Pretty Dead Girls, I would also enjoy her Friends series, and I requested this prequel novella before I realized how wrong I was. One Night is both a little better and slightly worse than Just Friends, so let’s begin with the bad, which can be summed up by the kind of content it is. It’s rare to find a prequel or a companion novella to a series that’s worth reading; unless you love the characters or the world, they typically don’t add anything meaningful to the universe, and One Night doesn’t break the mold. It barely has any plot of its own, and we already know pretty much everything that happens from Livvy’s reflections in the first book.
It’s slightly better because it has more character perspectives. Though they’re all at the same party, we have chapters from Livvy, Dustin, Amanda, Jordan, Emily, and Cannon’s POVs. It’s a lot for a short read, but I enjoyed the way it kept things moving. It also made me realize that I may have liked Just Friends more if someone else had been narrating, since Livvy and Dustin’s chapters were the worst. He has a sense of entitlement to her that’s seriously off-putting, and Livvy seems to have a realization about him early in the novella that it took her most of the first book to articulate (a little continuity disturbance?). I still like Amanda, and I liked having a little more insight into Emily’s character. However, while fans of the series might enjoy it, I’m not tempted to continue.
I review regularly at brightbeautifulthings.tumblr.com.
Ok so this book has alot of different couples and people in. And some of them make me want to explore and get to know them a he'll of alot better. Im so interested in jordan and amanda and cannon and Emily! And olivia and Dustin! Tho I think I don't want to see Dustin and olivia take it further I think it can will ruin there friendship.
One night is about a high school party thrown by the rich Jordan Tuttle. Amanda who Jordan likes finally comes to his party, Olivia who is leaving for her dads house the next day, Dustin who likes Olivia, Emily who is acting weird and Cannon. Short interesting story Prequel to Just Friends.
I absolutely enjoyed this story. I loved seeing all the different perspective of each friend. I can't wait to see what everyone will be up in there senior year in Just Friends.
I haven't read any of the other stories, but this novella was interesting. I liked how it gave you different points of views from each character. I was definitely interested in the characters and am looking forward to reading more of the series at some point.
I wish I had read One Night before jumping into Just Friends. Things make a lot more sense now! One Night is a short novella with multiple character POV's - Olivia (Livvy), Dustin, Emily (Em), Amanda, Jordan (Tuttle), and Cannon all have their own chapters. I really LOVED being inside of all the different characters heads and felt that this was the best part about the novella. The story itself revolves around the last night before Livvy leaves for 6 weeks and the party that they all attend at Tuttle's house.
One Night fills in a lot of blanks (and creates quite a few more questions!) and provides a little backstory/history for our characters. It also gives you more insight into why certain characters act the way that they do. It was hard only hearing and seeing things through Livvy's eyes in Just Friends, so I enjoyed the opportunity to view things from another perspective, especially Dustin and Tuttle's. In some ways, I am much more sympathetic to both Dustin and Tuttle after reading this, but on the other hand, I am more infuriated. I've got to hand it to Monica Murphy for making me feel all the emotions with this teenage drama!
I'm not sure though if a) I would have fully appreciated what was happening in One Night if I hadn't already read Just Friends, and b) if this novella would have intrigued me enough to start this series and find out more about these characters. Well, besides Amanda and Tuttle. ;) I found their story the most interesting and I'm really glad the next book focuses on them. If you read Just Friends, you definitely don't want to miss this prequel!
Teen soap opera drama at it's finest - and this is only a prequel.
It's the beginning of summer and Jordan Tuttle is throwing one of his amazing parties full of booze, sex - anyone who's anyone is there. And this sets the scene for meeting our six main characters. Best friends who like each other but refuse to commit, troubled girl chooses to drown her sorrows in booze and sex, shy girl catches her boyfriend cheating with her best friend and falls into the arms of the brooding rich boy...come on! This is a plot worthy of CW time.
If I'm being honest, most of the characters were annoying as hell and they almost all made stupid decisions. It was like a trainwreck, I couldn't look away from what was about to happen. The first book looks like it starts with the end of summer/beginning of senior year. I can only imagine all of the trouble these 6 got into in those short weeks.
One night summer bash... One night... a huge end-of-the-year party, loads of booze going around, lines between friends being blurred, disappointing discoveries and pushing things too far. A group of 17 year olds... each very different from one another are trying to discover themselves. Mixed feelings, disappointment, anticipation... are only a few of the emotions you'll feel reading what this rowdy bunch goes through in only just one night. A Prequel to "Just Friends" which will have you wanting to read more. 5 Anxious Stars for this Young Adult story.
One night is a prequel about whats going on at the Jordan Tuttle's party one day before Olivia leave for Oregon. One Night features the point of view of several characters.
Em is still on her whore-ish ways. Amanda walk in on her boyfriend cheating with her best friend. Olivia say goodbye to her friends. I didn't really that enjoy this book as much as I think I would. I didn't care about Em or Olivia or Dustin. All I care about is the POV of Tuttle and Amanda. Seriously they both are toooo sweet
Very short prequel to Just Friends. But it was very entertaining and kept me interested, didn't put it down until I was finished. So I'm sure that Just Friends will be just as good if not even better. So many couples, so many emotions, issues, drama, and now on to the new release to see how this story unfolds. lol
