This book was the first incarnation of John Granger's Christian defense of the Potter novels. It became "Looking for God in Harry Potter" for a while, and then was rewritten as "How Harry Cast His Spell." This book was good, but is now out of print and lacks the details of the last three or so books.

Overall it was an alright book. It was interesting reading another persons perspective of the Harry Potter series. It was also interesting reading the arguments being made about how the books are a Christian series which is not something I would have consciously thought of prior to this book, but I do see the connections. The author does tend to get redundant at times and the book only covers up to the Goblet of Fire but it may be worth checking out for those wanting to explore the series' connection to Christianity further.

This was a very interesting read that gave me a completely new perspective on the Harry Potter books (which I love). It was refreshing to have my opinion that Rowling writes in the same vein as Lewis, Dickens, and Tolkien confirmed. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is averse to reading the series.

Totul e frumos pana iti dai seama ca autorul compara seria Harry Potter cu viata lui Iisus si notiuni biblice. Sunt in schimb mici detalii interesante despre Tolkien si Lewis.

Если б эта книга была магической конфетой со всеми вкусами, то она была бы со вкусом какашки.
Начиналось всё неплохо. Видно, что автор далеко не один раз читал романы про Гарри. Таким образом, он очень хорошо оперирует деталями, которое мы в своё время пропустили или сочли незначительными. Конечно, Роулинг в деталях спрятала изрядную долю подсказок, которые автор берётся трактовать. Анализ его весьма неплох. Мне очень понравилась интерпретация тройки Гарри-Рон-Гермиона. Рон и Гермиона, оказывается, это сера и ртуть, которые в алхимии вступают в герметический брак и в итоге дают золото - Гарри. Занятная теория, интересно, крякнула ли Роулинг, когда узнала об этом. Также автор как бы невзначай раз сто хвастается нам знаниями в философии. В частности, платоновским "Федром". Из которого следует, что Гермиона - ум, Рон - тело, а Гарри - сердце, и только поэтому они действуют эффективно. Ещё один раз автор ссылается на Элиаде, что вообще в моих рейтингах уау.
И вдруг оказывается, что у автора помимо этого есть один недостаток. Он христианин. Поэтому, несмотря на то, что он объявил главной целью своей книги задачу объяснить, почему романы про ученика школы ведьмовства столь популярны, почти в начале объявляет нам, что Гарри - христианский герой, а дальше он берёт детские книги за уши и впихует в рамки христианской морали, как он её понимает. Ну что ж, не только у меня на родине всё плохо с РПЦ головного мозга. Итак, почему это вдруг герой книг, обвиняемый в неприкрытом язычестве, который не высказывает ни малейшей склонности к христианству, вдруг оказывается героем в глазах фанатика? Алхимия вдруг оказывается инструментом христианским. Дальше христианскими символами оказываются феникс, философский камень, единорог, кентавр, грааль (который кубок огня), красный грифон, лев, оборотень, вампир... ой, извините, меня тоже понесло. Полная шиза. Я согласна, что алхимия и христианство - это просто хитросплетённые элементы культуры, неотъемлемые от легенд и мифов многих поколений. Из песни слов не выкинешь, Гарри Поттер стоит на вековых преданиях. Больше всего, как автор говорит, и я с ним соглашаюсь, Гарри похож на Артура. Меч в шапке, белобородый волшебник-наставник, сиротство - очень многое сходится.
Трактовка имён. Гермиона - ртуть, Рон - замяли, поскольку не вписывается никуда, Невил Лонгботтом - звать никто из конца списка, Драко Малфой - дракон с неправильной верой (сатанопоклонник?), Лили Поттер - что-то там про лилии по весне (почему не символ непорочности??!), Джемс Поттер - потому что для любого англичанина Сейнт Джеймс не пустой звук. И та дам! Гарри Поттер. Гарри - читай как heir of - наследник. И Поттер - горшечник - это сам Бог. Итого - Гарри Поттер - наследник Бога, то есть Иисусик? Ну тут у самого автора немного бомбануло от собственной храбрости, так что он растушевал: сын Бога в том смысле как мы все с вами дети Бога, а не Иисусик. Но при этом всё равно Гарри наследник (Годрика Гриффиндора - избранный богом золотой грифон, т.е. опять Иисусик) и совсем не как все.
Забавно, как автор предвидит последующие книги (этот анализ написан до выхода пятой книги серии). Когда он пытается применить логику произведений такого типа - попадает в яблочко. Когда в дело идёт иисусик, всё валится к чертеням. Ну то есть, я дальше пока не читала, но смотрела кино. Посмотрим, насколько он там наврал. Он предполагает, что в названии 6 книги будет фигурировать единорог, а в 7 - кентавр, потому что в названии всегда есть аллюзия на Иисуса. На, допустим, принц-полукровка действительно Иисус, но смертельные пустоши - ...? Хотя... Может Роулинг таким образом как раз таки нанесла ответный удар этим христанутым аналитикам?
Зачем-то автор решил побахвалиться и рассказал нам историю. У него было две лекции в одной школе. Шестиклассники разгромили дядькову лажу про ГП и христианство. Зато пятиклассники развесили уши и восприняли как должное. Автор вроде бы какой-то свой вывод сделал из этого, что дескать с возрастом мозг коснеет. Но по-моему очевидно, что история говорит о другом. Что надо обладать исключительно мозгом уровня пятиклассника, чтобы слепо верить в иисусика и залеч про то что он везде, даже в Гарри. Ну и в широком смысле - про то, что истину можно склонять куда угодно, одним и тем же фактом можно доказать диаметрально противоположные теории. Это вам не математика.
Что ж, хоть мне и в какой-то момент понравилось читать критические и аналитические разборы книг, но, с опытом этой шняги, могу сказать, что критика надо выбирать ОЧЕНЬ тщательно. Не надо набрасываться на что угодно с той полки в библиотеке.

John Granger, also known as the Hogwarts Professor, is brilliant! He was the first to not only take JKR seriously as the brilliant (Inkling) writer she is but also her Harry Potter series as first-rate literature. Thank you, Mr. Granger!

His writing style in explaining his argument may be considered redundant by some in this review section, but I was grateful for it. He's making a lot of connections and teaching (me) a lot of new concepts (namely, alchemy) that I'm all too wiling to have drilled into me. He clearly expected (hoped?) his book would reach a wide audience and he aptly wrote with that in mind, and avoided oversimplifying key ideas (i.e., speaking down to the reader).

I'm most impressed with and most enjoyed the fact that he wrote this with only 4 books out! Granger is so kindly self-aware in what he says, especially when making his future-book predictions, cursed be anyone to critique him harshly. And hey, he made fantastic predictions! Even when he was wrong, he wasn't too far off the mark, truly.

I recognize that his other books may echo what he said here, but I can't wait to read them! Nor can I wait to quote him to anyone who will listen when I'm on another spiel of how amazing these books are and exactly why the books are so much better than the movies.

Interesting to hear a different perspective on the value of the HP books, even if this only went through Book 4 (Goblet of Fire). Lots of explanation of names, meanings, how HP books are very Christian, etc. Besides, it helps a little with my missing HP.

I've read all of his books on Harry Potter. I still say he is brilliant, even if he does get redundant at times.
