The world lives in the shadow of the Forerunners, the greatest civilisation the Four Realms has ever known. They burrowed into the ground and built into the sky, but then they vanished in their prime and man entered a dark age that has never truly ended. Only when the mythic Kato defeated the ghouls did centuries of hardship come to a close.

So when Dan is dismissed from the militia, it is at the worst of times: Forerunner ruins have been found, key to the future, and a madman is claiming to be the reincarnation of Kato, the hero who killed a god. As people watch to see if he will be captured, killed or become famous, Dan’s warnings – of a village destroyed and of folk disappearing by the dozens – fall on deaf ears. Before he can unravel the mystery, Dan finds himself at the centre of the culprit’s attention and he is forced to abandon all that is dear to him.

Yet as he runs for his life, he begins to understand why Kato's legacy is so dividing, why it is linked to the fall of an entire race - and why now, of all times, he is beginning to have dreams of a life he has never lived.

Solid book, I enjoyed the journey Dan goes through in this one. The book itself reminds me a lot of some of the other books I've read (Thinblade and Wheel of Time most notably) but that doesn't detract from the story.

Dan has a ring (which has a eagle on it) and its obvious from the get-go that he is the Reborn, what with the ring and the dreams of his other life as Lews Therin Kato.

All jokes aside, I liked this book, I picked up the 2nd one right away. It's a long first book, which I like, the various characters and the story behind the Forerunners and Kato and the Sorcerer was well fleshed out as well...the glimpses you get of the past wasn't a determent on the story or flow. Good action scenes as well - I enjoyed my whole read.

One thing that bothered me, was Dan's lack of maturity. I think he's supposed to be 21 or so, and he has spent time as a Scout in the Militia...with all these things going on you would think that he would be at least a little hardened to the journey he goes on, but he's barely able to keep up with his farmer friends. And the fact that he doesn't speak his mind bothered me, all he had to do at a few parts were tell his mentor "hey, so I'm having these dreams..." - or "so hey, we are in all this danger, might be good if you showed me how to use a sword..."

It was good to see him finally come through in the end and stop his complaining, as I read I had to think of him as a teen since he acted like one.

All in, solid book, I recommend for any fantasy fans.

I was Lucky enough to win a copy of Renegade from a Good reads give-away.
This is the second book in the Eagleheart trilogy. On arrival the book was a hardback copy
of 612 pages. The book is self published through Lulu.com a print on demand house and the binding and dust cover are very professional. The cover art and maps are the work of the author and the book is self edited.

The second in a trilogy is never the place to start and there is nothing early in the book to recap the events that occurred in Paragon, the first book. That said it is engaging if a little confusing from the start. The split story line follows Dan, Uanadain as the main character and his friends Lex and Ghadad as they seek allies in an upcoming war against the forerunners a semi mythical race existing before the four realms and the time the book is set in. Uanadain is central to the story through dreams and visions suggesting he is the Reborn a reincarnation of Kato, a famous general and the man who killed the forerunners god. A title he acknowledges but which turns former allies away from his cause.

Dan’s father left him an eagle ring which gives him a link to Silverwing an eagle who he has a telepathic link to and whose senses he can use as his own. In this world it seems everybody has a beast they are paired with but most people do not find theirs.

Overall I would give the book a solid 3.75/5 score it is well planned and progressed plot is good and sensibly maintained. Dialogue in places is a bit flat but the story picks up well and moves on from this. The author knows weapons and armour and the fight scenes are tense with an element of risk our protagonists take no risks beyond those they have to and do not walk off their wounds. I get the impression she knows horses very well. The story holds together and despite my confusion at starting in the middle of the trilogy I was engaged enough to buy the first book, Paragon (despite a 100+ in my TBR pile) which I have started and will read the concluding part in the future.

I was lucky enough to read this book (The first in the Eagleheart trilogy) when it first came out in 2011 and immediately I was gripped. If you like fantasy novels, this writer has created an imaginative and original world, where not only does the reader become absorbed in Dan's journey, but due to the shifts in time, soon you become transfixed by the events of the novel and the different realms. There is the right balance of vivid decsription, mystery (Kato and the man who claims to be his reincarnation), along with an abundance of action, all exquisitely written. If you haven't had a chance to read this yet, grab your copy! I do recommend it.
