Der Titel ist Etikettenschwindel. Es ist schon wichtig, dass man sich als Leser für Botanik interessiert. Sonst langweilt man sich mit dem Buch zu Tode. Da ich nichts gegen eine Auffrischung meines Schulwissens habe, hat mir das Buch gefallen.

Also ich fand das Buch wirklich gut. Es hat dem Leser einen guten Überblick über Bestäubung und Pflanzenarten gegeben.
Besonders schön fand ich auch die Bilder und Zeichnungen, die alle paar Seiten vorhanden waren. Das war ganz angenehm, weil man dadurch sich das Erzählte besser vorstellen konnte und nicht nach den Pflanzen googeln musste.

Mein einziger Kritikpunkt sind die Überschriften. Für ein Buch, im dem Pflanzen sachlich und wissenschaftlich beschrieben werden, hätte ich mir passendere Kapitelüberschriften gewünscht. Titel wie „Huren und Callboys“, „Trinker und andere Drogenabhängige“, „Rotlichtmilieu“ oder „Säufer und Vordrängler“ passen meiner Meinung nach nicht zu einem Buch, in dem botanische Fachbegriffe wie Apomixis oder Pollinien dem Leser näher gebracht werden.

If you are a plant geek or just a gardener looking to try to better understand your plants, this is a fun read. The author writes in a light-hearted style and this makes even the more technical information easy reading. After reading this, I have a much greater appreciation for plants and the myriad ways they lure pollinators to their flowers.

‘De naakte waarheid over het seksleven van planten’. Hoe goedkoop ook de woordspeling in de ondertitel, het onderwerp leek me wel boeiend.

Maar opnieuw komt het cliché uit: wetenschappers die in hun boeken graag de grapjas uithangen om een breder publiek aan te trekken, overdrijven altijd. Echt áltijd! En dus ook nu weer.

De hoofdstukken vind ik wel goed gevonden: ‘Rosse buurten’, ‘Sletten en hoeren’, ‘Verlegen planten en narcisten’ (jammer dat de auteur/vertaler niet op ‘muurbloempjes’ kon komen) … Ik was wel benieuwd welke plantjes de goorste slettebakken zijn. Of welke technieken de lieflijke bloempjes zoal toepassen om allerlei vreemde beesten over zich heen te laten kruipen om zich voor te planten.

Maar hoe veelbelovend het opzet, echt boeiend is het niet. Misschien omdat het zo chaotisch is, of vrijblijvend. Soms te lang en gemakkelijk, en daarna weer vol complexe wetenschappelijke woorden. Bovendien op een vervelende manier vertaald. In plaats van wat pikante formuleringen te verzinnen om de toffe pee uit te hangen, had de auteur best nagedacht over een logischer, interessanter structuur zodat je zou blijven doorlezen.

Maar dat deed ik dus niet. Na één derde klapte ik het boek dicht. Over naar volwassener werk.

What an interesting read! I knew that pollinators could be more than just insects, but I didn't realize just how much variety there was in terms of pollination in nature. Or how many genders plants can potentially have. Papayas can apparently have 81 due to how their chromosomes and flowers work. But even then most plants can have 7+ different genders.

The author's sense of humor might not be for everyone but I personally found it to be quite engaging and at times very funny. They also offered quite a few other books in the back that could make for interesting reads as well.

Definitely recommend this book if you're looking for something non-fiction that's easy to understand and at times, very funny.

Menevä kuvaus kasvien lisääntymistavoista ja yhteiselämästä pölyttäjien kanssa. Vanhojen kasvitaulujen käyttäminen kuvituksessa tuo yhtenäisyyttä ja tiettyä arvokkuutta kirjalle. Punastelu kasvien ”seksielämälle” tuntuu kuitenkin tarpeettomalta ja vähän lapselliselta, ja rinnastukset ihmiselämään jäävän hieman puolitiehen. Kannattaa kuitenkin lukea.
