"When I was 13 years old... people were split into two groups. The users and the used. The warm and the freezing. The humans and the firewood. That was how the world worked. it made sense. and nobody fought back. nobody except for one person. a man engulfed in flames.

Finally, the blessed got out of their cages and Behemdorg is in ruins! If I knew this is going to be possible this early, I'd devour this volume as soon as possible. I worried over nothing like I always do! Best volume so far. Great character arcs and action sequence. And with Fireman's Fire "Punch" debut, that was a satisfying first punch! I was literally screaming!

The director's planned movie outline is ruined as Agni goes off script once he enters Behemdorg. It's still a cover-to-cover fight scene, but motivation and goals keep changing, and a reader could get whiplash trying to keep up.

“At the time I was thirteen, two types of people existed. Those that used others, and those that were used by others. Those that were warm, and those that were cold. Humans and fuel. In this world that was common sense, and nobody attempted to oppose that order. All save for one that is, a single man cloaked in flames.”

TW: Gore, graphic violence, death, mentions of sexual abuse, madness.

It seems like it's going to be a staple of this manga to never go as I expect it to as this volume was absolutely the opposite of all my predictions in the most wonderful way possible.

First of all, it was a surprisingly fast read. Usually, it takes me a long time to get around each of these ones as they are quite heavy with all the philosophical, thematic, metaphysical references and musings, and while this installment did have some of it it didn't compare to other volumes. The more action-centric focus that we get was a very nice break in the norm and refreshing to encounter.

Even though it might have been mostly fighting there was more than one jaw-dropping moment that just blew my mind.

“Like hell I’ll lose! I won’t just die! That’s right, I hated it all! The snow. The hunger. The insanity. This entire time! I never should have let others rule over me! I won’t lose.”

Agni's journey has become more interesting than it seemed it was going to turn out to be and the way it all interweaves together is satisfying to witness. We start our journey with him in such an abrupt manner that getting to be alongside him as some of these changes happen is a great experience.

Really, all of the characters had their time to shine and grow in the middle of all the craziness happening around them.

The fights were dynamic, eye-catching, and exhilarating in all the best ways. With entire panels dedicated to the details of the fight, it was really fun to expend some time just admiring the details and taking it all in.

While the fights and expansion of the themes were great the furthering of the mystery and deepening of the sense of an utterly unreliable narrator are some of my favorite parts of this story. Using insanity as a way to create this atmosphere is quite a fun way to go about it.

“Because, giving Luna a happy life was the fuel of my own survival. So I could only lie to myself, and turn the wish of killing [redacted] in the most excruciating manner into the fuel that I could feed upon to keep me going. So, in order for me to survive, my only path was to act as an avenger. I know very well that killing [redacted] will not bring Luna back from the dead. I hate only because I want to lessen the pain. I even forgot that I’m actually acting a part. The real you, what sort of person are you? You feel that it would be great if all the bad people in this world died out. However, you are unwilling to watch people die in front of you. You cannot forgive the evil committed in front of your eyes, so you also cannot ignore death when it happens before you. This is my justice. […] I want to rescue them […] because I want to save them. I want to save them… I want to… because… I don’t want things to end this way. I don’t want to surrender myself to this world.”

5/5 estrellas.

A huge upgrade for the series, if in traditional ways. A shift to spectacular scale (which Fujimoto does here incredibly well, a scale and clarity rarely seen in CSM), excellent design on character, moral stakes that, again, are traditional in a text like, but finally give the story something to hold onto and root for. Three books in some of the characters remain vague and confusing on who is who beyond the core three or so, but that’s ok. A low four, but still a big improvement.

This is what I was expecting when I picked up this series. A knock down, drag out fight from a completely overpowered, over hyped, ‘hero’. Basically a grittier, no comedy version of One Punch Man. I’m not disappointed.

And the ending left us on such a big cliffhanger!!!

This series has 8 volumes.

“I want to…save them. Because… I don’t want…this world to beat me.”

Honestly the best volume of the series so far. A lot of good character development for everyone, the most action by far, and that final reveal in the last chapter completely upended my understanding of this world so far. Not to mention, we get the title drop in this volume, too. I couldn’t have asked for more.

My favorite part of this volume was the overarching theme of characters accepting the truth; of being truthful of who they are and what they want. Poor Agni really goes through it in this volume, and while he does seem to reach some kind of understanding of who he really is, it might not be enough save him from even more pain to come.

According to the intertitle in the last chapter, we’ve finally reached an interlude; a break in the action before the next volume. But was this a moment of reprieve? Or the calm before the storm?

4/5 With the help Togata Agni is closing in on Doma. Though Togata has aspirations of her own.

Agni arrives in Behemdorg clothed in a fire proof suit. When he arrives Judah has an ensemble of powerful inmates released from prison who have been suped up to take him on.

All sorts of craziness happens and the story takes a turn I wasn't expecting. I am really enjoying this super hero horror story. I can't wait to see what happens next.

Volume 3 of Fire Punch is solid.

I'd say it's weaker than volume 2, but stronger than volume 1: a lot happens in this volume in terms of action, but plot wise, there's a few major points. They're all kinda' spoiler-y, so I'd rather not discuss them. I've got a feeling they set up themes that'll be explored in the next volume.

So, yeah. Fire Punch volume 3 is pretty good.

I didn’t think they could lose the plot any further but clearly I was mistaken. This must be a shit post or something because what the hell is going on. The plot changes every 5 seconds and same with the characters. At least I never know what to expect. I was finding it a bit slow but the end was unexpected again.

Quite an improvement overall. A lot of the edgy stuff remains, but in much lower volume, and handled more maturely overall. This volume was a really interesting look at the main character Agni, and what he's really living for. At the same time, questions are brought up about the direction the manga is going in parallel, which I thought was a great use of the already established meta angle the Director brings to the table. Those meta elements are toned down a lot this volume in favor of action and drama, which I think was a good decision. I think the mangaka found a good middle ground so that things don't feel too serious, almost feels like an inverse Golden Kamuy. Now that the edge has been rounded off, this is shaping up to be a much more well rounded manga.

This is a review of the entire series.

One day, a miracle happened. A new breed of children called gifted ones were born into the world, each with their own bizarre powers. In the distant past, an evil gifted one known as the Ice Witch unleashed a never-ending blizzard upon the world which led to a new ice age and the near-extinction of all life on Earth. Humanity returns to their primal nature, surviving only by cannibalizing, pillaging and enslaving each other.

Agni and Luna are orphaned siblings, gifted ones with the power of regeneration. They can regrow any limb they lose and heal from any injury. Agni's powers are nearly unlimited while Luna requires much more recovery time. Their fellow villagers take advantage of this by repeatedly chopping off their limbs and cooking them over a fire for daily nourishment. They're treated like fuel and life is bleak for the brother and sister, but they find comfort in surviving together.

That all changes when an army of wicked gifted ones raid their village for slaves and resources, only to misinterpret them as maniacal savages who torture and cannibalize their own people. They burn the entire village down along with everyone who lives there. Luna's powers are too weak to fully resist the might of the flames, leaving Agni the only survivor of the massacre. His gift becomes a curse, as the flames that consume his body can only be extinguished upon death, which his unlimited regenerative powers prevent. Unable to die, he becomes a walking inferno that's in constant agony of being devoured by fire. With nothing but pain and hatred consuming him, he turns his fiery rage into a weapon to take revenge on the ones who took his sister away and the Ice Witch that caused the destruction of the world.

Fire Punch is an insanely edgy dystopian thriller with a unique ice age setting. The first volume alone contains torture, cannibalism, incest, extreme child abuse, genocide, slavery and just about every other nightmarish thing you can imagine. Most of the disturbing content is purely for shock value, along with the characters all being very over-the-top twisted. Agni is your typical edgelord antihero, there's a wannabe film maker girl who likes to record real murder and tragedies for her own entertainment, there's cultists who worship fire, constant gore and death all over the place, it's wild and shocking all the way through.

It's the type of series you read just to see how weird, disturbing and shocking it can get. It's definitely not for everyone, only fans of extreme shock horror would probably find any enjoyment from it. The plot and characters are passable, but neither have much depth to them. It's still entertaining for the shock-value alone and the entire second half of the series reaches levels of absurdity that I can't even begin to properly describe. I honestly have no idea what the hell happened because it was so ridiculous, surreal and just barely coherent.

That's Fire Punch in a nutshell. It's edgy and absurd for no reason, but it's so weird, gruesome and over-the-top that it still manages to be entertaining so long as you have a strong stomach and a dark sense of humor.

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD XX As enjoyable as this series is to read, I don't feel as though much is happening to be honest despite the cliff-hanger towards the end of the volume where Agni meets the Ice Witch who is the character which looks much like his dead sister Luna. During this volume, Agni prepares to fight with and exact his revenge on Doma but instead some extremely powerful Blessed characters show up and attack him. He of course wins especially now that he's dressed in attire which is more suitable for him (given to him by Togata) but sets the whole of Behemdorg on fire in the process which was rather a stupid thing to do especially considering how many people he saved from slavery since humans are regarded as firewood and dehumanised intensely in Behemdorg. The people of Behemdorg start to rebel and some even worship Agni as a god while others perceive him as a devil. It's very depressing to see that the only reason Agni still persists is because his sister told him to live and that is what keeps him going. I had higher expectations considering the quality of the first two volumes but now it's taken quite a generic turn although there is still much more to figure out and I am admittedly rather suspenseful. Agni basically just doesn't follow Togata's lead considering how he basically wanted to direct everything and thought he was in charge of both sides of this rebellion. Sun is also safe once more which is certainly a relief (Neneto is not given enough credit).
