Nothing beats getting out of the concrete jungle and into the quiet of the forest. Website designer Scottie Ness is taking a well-deserved vacation from the grindstone, and he plans to spend it in the solitude of Washington’s Gifford Pinchot National Forest around Mt. Adams. He’s prepared for everything—except the lightning storm that traps him in a wildfire.

The firefighter who rescues him sustains serious injuries and ends up in the hospital. Jax Quintero might be abrasive, but the guy saved his life, and Scottie wants to thank him. As they spend time together during Jax’s recovery and exploring the state’s landmarks when he’s released from the hospital, Scottie discovers there’s more to Jax than a smart-ass adrenaline junkie. Jax reassesses his opinion of Scottie as an arrogant city boy who has no business in the mountains. Though Jax’s wounds prevent them from taking things as far as they’d like for a while, they can’t deny the heat building between them—and this is one fire they don’t want to put out.

4** Scottie an easygoing guy who takes a seven days break and goes on his own hiking and camping.
What follows is a very nice and enjoyable review of the forest, hiking, the shots with the camera.
Scottie is exhausted from early waking and long walks. Then there is the thunder and lightning.

Jax hard working on a fire in the forest and getting an update about a hiker who didn't get through any checkpoints. Stupid idiot hiker
Jax and his fellow firefighters luckily finding Scotty who is unconscious and with some head injury.
The smoke is getting thicker and it didn't go well. Jax is one hell of a angry bear who despise Scottie and thinks he is a stupid city boy. Hiding in a shelter is all what's left to do.
How the fire and how their hiding for it is described was really very captivating....i was sitting on the edge of my chair.....fire is so destructive, very frightening.

During a recovery time for both Scottie but more Jax, they are getting to know each other more and they like each other....very much.
They just went easily and friendly around each other and knowing they were interested :)
Scottie and Jax had humor and that is so lovely...They made trips together and spending almost all their time together. All this was very pleasurable written down.
It was a slow burn, it had to be because of the injuries and all building up leads to very sensual and hot parts.

It's a comfortable warm sweet story. They both were honest and real and have great personalities.
A very enjoyable good written and great detailed story which made me fall in love with Scottie and Jax.

I'm sorry, but that's how I felt reading this. Utterly bored out of my damn mind. It seemed wayyyer longer then what it was, but I just couldn't grasp any of it. I mean once Scottie got going with his mojo it completely put me to sleep. I liked that it was different in the setting and circumstances, but it never felt real between the two. Was it survivor's remorse or guilt for Jax getting injured that made Scottie so interested in him. It was no, but to me it didn't seem authentic enough. Yeah, I know relationships can grown, and two people can learn to like and love one another. I just felt the initial meeting of the them and the leading up to the romance part felt forced. Before Scottie, can make his feeling known Jax kinda threw it out there about himself, and it felt a little like settling.

I don't want to sound like the Grinch here, but if they liked it then I guess it works. It doesn't change the fact that I was completely bored. This was a first book for me by this author. I did enjoy the writing as such, but I didn't like the story. I will try more of her work. I think if you like a little humor, hurt comfort with a touch of rescuing then this could be for you!!!!

3.5 stars rounded up to 4...It wasn't a bad book. The beginning was great, the rescue and how they spent time together but I have to admit it kind of dragged just a bit in the middle for me. I'm thinking because the beginning was actioned filled with him getting rescued. The middle was about them healing and spending time together. They were very sweet together though...

‘On Fire’ is set in Washington State, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading about many of the places I have visited before, and a few that are now on my list of destinations not to miss next time I travel there. Like with previous installments of the ‘States of Love’ series, a collection of romantic stories that spans every corner of the United States, this newest volume gives a great taste of the geography, the people who live and work there, and some of the dangers one might come across. Like forest fires. The whole first part of this book was fascinating due to the outdoor scenes Scottie enjoys while on a hiking vacation, followed by the suspense when a forest fire hits and Jax and his team desperately try to save Scottie.

Scottie is a computer programmer, but he loves taking photographs in his spare time, and he is really good at it. He prefers nature to the city, but when he gets caught in a lightning-caused forest fire he is in deep trouble.

Jax is a dedicated fireman (I only wish I’d found out more about why he is so determined) and being laid up all summer while his knee is healing does not make him happy. In fact he is a real a** about it in the beginning, and Scotty’s determination to thank him is the only reason they begin to talk. There isn’t any significant angst or tension from then on, instead there are lots of trips as Scottie and Jax explore Washington and their mutual, growing attraction.

If you like romances that take a while to get to the physical side of things, if two men who meet purely by coincidence and don’t get off to the best of starts are your thing, and if you’re looking for a gentle friends-to-maybe-more story in a varied Washington setting, then you might like this novella.

States of Love Series – Washington State.

This novella length story flows along much like those streams in the Pacific Northwest – sometimes a bit turbulent, sometimes happily burbling. On Fire starts out a bit turbulent as Jax’s hotshot crew is informed that there is a civilian camping in an area a backburn was scheduled for, and Jax is pissed he has to save a pansy-assed city boy from his own stupidity. Scottie, in his defense, did everything he was supposed to, but just ended up in the wrong place at the wrong time. Both men end up in the hospital.

What I enjoyed about this book was the relationship wasn’t based on “insta-love” or even “insta-sex”. It wasn’t enemies to lovers, but two guys who got off on the wrong foot (knee perhaps?) and come to a mutual understanding, before being able to move forward – but not into bed.

In a genre where so many relationships and plots are based solely on sex, this was a bright little gem. Too often I find myself cringing as incapacitated person on painkillers in the hospital is getting his rocks off. Ah, no. Which is why I applaud how Ms. Nordwell handled Jax’s knee injury so deftly indeed.

Jax and Scottie dated. There was wooing, and pursuing, and moments of lancing pain when something got bumped the wrong way. It made the characters feel more real and human, it made their dates all that more realistic, and it made the romance all that much more enjoyable because the reader can watch that turbulent mountain stream start to turn into a burble.

I also admit, I liked the tour of the space needle and the Pike’s Place. Oddly, I enjoyed the struggles navigating a city the size of Seattle, of parking in a tourist area with someone who is mobility challenged – very nice touch of realism!

Simply, I liked Jax and Scottie and I appreciated watching the relationship unfold.

My one quirk with the story was at the beginning – understanding that setting back burns is based off humidity levels, wind conditions, and weather forecasts…if Scottie dropped his location information off at the Ranger Station and the fire crews were planning on burning that area that week, I did find it a bit implausible that the crews wouldn’t check in with the station before setting torch to duff OR that area would be closed to camping/hiking and signs posted.

But hey, being a bit of a nitpick.

Go grab a Starbucks and enjoy!

This is a cute series about boys falling in love all over the US. In this installment our boys are in my neck of the woods, Vancouver, WA/Portland OR. They also hang out in Olympic National Park and Seattle, so I guess it’s more a Washington book than an Oregon one but… it’s still all wonderful scenery!

We start out with some danger but that’s about it for angst. Our boys fall for each other fairly quickly and only injuries sustained in the fire keep them from moving forward at a break-neck speed. Instead they get to know one another and travel a bit and make out ☺

I think there could have been more done with some of the differences between the guys being a bigger thing, but what we end up with is a low angst, easy, light read. It’s sweet, ends on a solid HFN and has some great glimpses of a lovely state for anyone looking at the travel side of the story.

On Fire is part of the States of Love series and the first book I've read by Alicia Nordwell.

Scottie Ness decides to spend his vacation hiking and picture taking in the forest. He grew up hiking, camping and exploring with his family so this is a relaxing vacation for him. He's prepared and has taken all precautions possible, but didn't prepare to be caught in a lightning storm which then traps him in a wildfire.

Scottie is rescued by a group of firefighters. Jax is abrasive and a jerk about the rescue, especially when he's injured in the line of duty. When Scottie is discharged from the hospital, he decides to thank Jax for saving him. Jax is a jerk, but Scottie is attracted to him and continues to visit him. Jax and Scottie find their attraction is mutual, and they're able to explore their feelings while Jax is recovering.

This story had a lot of details about camping, and reminded me of how much I hated camping with my family as a teen! It was really impressive though the thought and effort that was put into detailing Scottie's preparation to go camping and his activity once there. And it showed that no matter your level of experience, or how much you plan, some things are out of your control. Jax did come across as a jerk. On the one hand, he's throwing a fit about rescuing a camper but that's his job as a firefighter. But he's not just someone who doesn't want to do their job, he's mad about taking his team further into danger and putting their lives at risk. Though both men were attracted to each other, this book was a slow build up and really developed a relationship between the two before anything sexual happened.

Overall, a really enjoyable story with some really well-written characters! And, it's a hot firefighter story meets computer nerd, how can anyone pass that up! And you get a chance to explore. The author does a great job of describing all the scenery. I did hope for an epilogue that let me see Jax and Scottie in a future scenario. You know, when Jax goes back to work and once family's have been met, and they're still together making their relationship to work. But it's still a really enjoyable book!

Okay, first we have Scottie; businessman, city boy who gets a week vacation from work and decides to do what his family has always done and spend some time out in the wilderness. Hiking and camping and just getting away to the quiet of nature and take some pictures of the mountains, that’s his hobby and he’s quite good at it. He’s responsible about it as well, he leaves daily reports and checks in with park rangers and safety spots so that if he runs into any trouble, the correct people will know where he’s at and where he’s headed. Just in case.

What he wasn’t anticipating is a wild brush fire and it gets out of hand fast and he ends up getting injured. Meanwhile, Jax, firefighter and dude with a bad attitude thinks Scottie is just another amateur out on the mountains and he’s got to risk his life to try to save him…. And come on, dude… it’s your job… I didn’t care much for Jax in the beginning; I didn’t like the attitude he had or the way he treated Scottie, especially because, like I said, it’s his job and he takes great pride in it; so what’s the deal?

Scottie feels bad enough and takes it upon himself to visit Jax often in the hospital after he gets hurt during Scottie’s rescue and brings him gifts and finds ways to entertain him during his timely hospital stay. They get to know each other that way and then more and more as time goes on. I don’t wanna spoil too much of it, but their relationship progresses in a natural friends to lovers kind of way. It doesn’t take long because they’re attracted to each other from the beginning, there’s little to no angst and I liked that, I’m not big on angsty reads so this one was a good, light read with a few steamy encounters thrown in. It ends on a sweet note and it’s just the beginning for these two, I’m curious to see if there’s more in store for these two sometime in the future. This is the first book I’ve read from this author and it was just the kind of story I needed at the moment. Light, sweet and low angst.

4 stars for me 

3 Stars for this States of Love book. I really enjoyed the last one and the uniqueness of the setting and characters, so in comparison, this book fell way flat. But taking that comparison away, On Fire was a decent read – especially at the beginning.

When the book starts out, you meet Scottie at work as a graphic designer (wearing a suit though?!?!), about to head out of town on holiday where he’ll be spending the week hiking and taking pictures. What happens is a good read… the unexpected perhaps, some drama, and a hospital stay or two. But as soon as the connection between Jax and Scottie is made, the book completely fizzled out.

It’s like all of the groundwork had absolutely no relevance and bam – they were an item and the world was right. Very surface level and filled with a lot of extraneous information and details (which drives me batty! Don’t tell me things I don’t need to know!!!). And to add insult to injury, I didn’t really find anything unique or interesting about the setting or characters – which I thought had been the focus of this series.

So that all sounds pretty bad, why a 3 rating? First, because the beginning was very promising! I was into it – and it kept me reading through the end. Second, there was some definite potential there… it just missed the mark. If you love a Washington/Vancouver setting, or a hot fireman, pick this up… otherwise, try the one prior in this series for more “remote” outcomes!

This has just become my second favourite story of Alicia's. The first will always be Pricolici as it was the first one of hers I read :)

Anyway back to this story...I loved the slow burn with the relationship. It was great to read a story that didn't have insta love, or a whirlwind romance ending in a solid couple within a few days/weeks.

My favorite character is actually Jax. He was so funny when he was all snarly in the hospital. His attitude at the beginning made me wonder, but of course he's a teddy bear.

My favorite bit is when the nurse comes in to tell them visiting hours are over and Jax is polite. Her response had me giggling a while.

I would highly recommend this story to everyone.

Scotty is a computer worker that loves to hike and take pictures. He dreams of making coffee table books of mountain photos. There is a lot to take pictures of in Washington where he lives. He didn't know there were threats of a wildfire when he mapped out his vacation plans

Jax and his team of firefighters are on the last leg of their over time mission. They have set their backfire to turn the fire around when they get word of a camper not accounted for and have to find him. Jax is angry at the stupid hiker for putting them all at risk but can't help but like him after he gets to know him.

I liked this story. There was a lot going on for a short story. I loved Jax and Scotties slow build from friends to lovers. The first part of the book had the action of the fire then we had the healing and romance. I loved all the characters. There were some interesting men in Jax's team, and Scotty had a good friend as well. The descriptions were fantastic. I felt like I was hiking with Scotty and on tour with them when they went to Seattle.

I would like to see more of Scotty and Jax and also find out what happened with all of Jax's friends especially Dave.

If you like computer nerds, nature, hikes, hot firemen, heroes, friends to lovers, and some hot romance, I think you will like this.

I found this interesting at times - the fire, Scottie camping, the trips they took - but at others a bit too much telling. I don’t mind finding out how he made his lean to camp site in detail but getting out of the shower at that level is a bit too much - I can extrapolate.
I liked the slow burn between Scottie and Jax as necessitated by Jax’s injuries. (Did wonder why Dave’s much worse injuries faded away).
Interesting travel facts and once the fire had happened, very much a character lead story.

I really liked this. Scottie has been camping and hiking for ages but gets caught in an unexpected fire. Jax is the gruff and surly firefighter who saves him but gets injured in the process. Scottie felt bad and visited him in the hospital, and the two guys got to know each other a lot better. Their connection was sweet. I liked how they didn't shy away from it once Jax got past his pain and let his guard down. This was on the shorter side, but I didn't feel like I missed out on anything except for more of these guys.

Probably closer to 2.5/5. I liked the characters, but there just wasn't much there. More background and build up of the relationship would have been nice.

Scottie is one of those people who loves nature and his idea of an amazing vacation is going in to the mountains and camping and becoming one with nature. He enjoys hiking and getting as many pictured as he can of the wildlife and mountains.

His vacation is planned and going perfectly until there is a lightning storm that sparks a forest fire. Unfortunately Scottie is caught in the middle of it and if it was not for the firefighter that risked his life and was injured also in the process then Scottie would not have made it out alive.

No one ever expects to have a major crisis bring to them the one person that is meant for them. But that is what happened when Hax rescued Scottie. It was definitely not love at first sight. Both men assumed the worst of the other because of where they came from and their attitudes towards the other. But Scottie felt he owed it to Jax to at the very least get him a present to occupy his time while he is recovering in the hospital after saving his life.

The more time these two men spent together the closer they became. Also the more the attraction is between them grew. Sometimes something good can come out of a not so good circumstances.

These two men may never have crossed paths if it had not of been for Jax having to save Scottie's life. I believe that their reward was finding each other.

This is a short story that is full of humor and lust. It has two hot men that are determined to get to know one another. It was a wonderful story about how something bad can definitely turn into something amazing. It was a great story. I really enjoyed reading it and think others will also.
