Who hasn't stopped along the banks of a stream to look for fish? Anyone who wants to enjoy fish in their own world will want this lavishly illustrated guide to a new kind of nature study. An expert whose passionate interest in fish is contagious, C. Lavett Smith is promoting a whole new outdoor pastime―fish watching.
Omg, I love this book. It’s what the title says it is; a book on how to watch fish! It’s aimed at naturalists who watch birds and mammals and insects and plants...but have ignored or written off fish as inaccessible without diving equipment or at least a boat. With some simple techniques and advice, the author opens up a whole new world to explore.
I’m amazed by how much information is packed in to this relatively short book. It’s very well written in a friendly, casual style, but in addition to describing how to find, watch, and photograph fish, it includes information on habitats, northeastern US fish species, anatomy, behavior, evolution, human impact, and many other topics. It even has a section that describes the anatomical features that technically separate different fish groups and another on scientific names...two fascinating subjects I can’t remember seeing in any other nature book for a general audience.
This book focuses on species and habitats northeastern US and is most useful for eastern North America - it’s a must have for any naturalist in that region.
