This series of short vignettes about the life of the author written in the voice of a child reads like a series of poems or songs. They focus on her home life and neighborhood and how she navigated the complexities of both. The writing speaks volumes about the oppression experienced by first and second generation immigrants, family poverty, and about women trapped in that oppression. Sandra's voice is so strong as she brings to life her community so authentically.
