Not about mathematics. Rather, this is a book of anecdotes about mathematicians.

Io non sono così inflessibile. Posso tollerare che un limerick non venga tradotto come limerick, perdendo la sua musicalità. Ma quando ad esempio trovo scritto in un aneddoto che Paul Erdös chiede "Dimostrami che se hai <em>n+1</em> positivo e intero minore o uguale a <em>2n</em>, alcune loro coppie sono numeri primi relativi [Non avendo alcun fattore in comune tranne che uno]", capisco due cose. La prima è che il traduttore non sa nulla di matematica, il che di per sé non è un problema se il libro non parlasse evidentemente di matematica. La seconda è che a Mondadori nessuno ha pensato di rileggere le bozze, tenuto conto che il brano in questione si trova all'inizio di pagina quindici. O forse, e non so se sia ancora peggio, hanno pensato che tanto la gente comune è convinta che i matematici siano strambi, e prende per oro colato qualunque cosa si dica di loro. In ogni caso, fatevi un favore: se sapete l'inglese potete pensare di prendere il libro in edizione originale, pur sapendo che comunque è una specie di minestrone; altrimenti lasciate perdere e vivete tranquilli e felici.

all'inizio è divertente, finché non inizi a cercare un filo conduttore. in realtà ci si perde tra citazioni e aneddoti senza arrivare da nessuna parte, o così mi è sembrato nelle prima 40 pagine. già mi stavo annoiando, quando ho trovato questa perla: "mai mettere descartes davanti al cavallo". ora, se uno non sa l'inglese non ci può arrivare. il traduttore suppongo sapesse l'inglese, ma non ha trovato una soluzione al calembour. e così ha lasciato lì l'ammicamento incomprensibile al "put the cart (descartes) before the horse" che in italiano è il banale "mettere il carro davanti ai buoi". sono rimasta talmente male che ho abbandonato il libro.
