Gary Lachman is an American writer and musician. Lachman is best known to readers of mysticism and the occult from the numerous articles and books he has published.
With interest in the occult reaching the mainstream, it is surprising that one of the most influential esoteric thinkers since the Enlightenment, Emmanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772), is so rarely referred to by name. For those who want to discover more about this Swedish thinker, Into the Interior: Discovering Swedenborg by Gary Lachman, is an excellent introduction, although, by its own admission, limited in its scope.
As its title suggests, this book is a subjective reading of Swedenborg that focuses on the elements closest to the author’s heart. Lachman’s main field of interest is "the history of consciousness". So, while he presents an excellent overview of Swedenborg’s life and his forensic quest to discover a rational link between the finite material world and the infinite world beyond sensory perception, it is really after Swedenborg’s mid-life crisis of 1774-75 that Lachman comes into his element.
