As she helplessly rides in a carriage steered by her kidnappers, the only thing Adine can do is wait. The marketplace is ahead of her and her future is growing dimmer with every mile. A short time later, she is sold into slavery with three other women, leaving her with nothing--not even hope. But everything changes when a band of Freedom Fighters storm their wagon and snatch Adine and her fellow captives from their new owners. Now as Adine is left to wonder whether the men are really freedom fighters or slave traders in disguise, she struggles with her decision to trust them. As the caravan travels through a desert rampant with murderous slave traders, poisonous vipers, and an ex-slave with an evil mission, one Freedom Fighter appoints himself as Adine's bodyguard. Drake must not only protect the naïve girl from the dangers in the desert, but also from himself. As he tackles threats and attempts to keep Adine alive, his loyalty to the caravan is tested, leaving him with an agonizing choice and the power to transform Adine's future. Fallow shares an exciting tale of adventure after a young girl is kidnapped, sold into slavery, and rescued by Freedom Fighters who lead her down a dangerous path where a new destiny awaits.

Fallow by Laura McCaskill is an action-adventure short novel. The story follows our main female lead, Adine, after she was kidnapped and then sold into slavery with other women. But a band of Freedom Fighters charge their wagon and help release her from her new owners. One of the freedom Fighters, Drake, appoints himself as her personal bodyguard to protect her from not only himself but other potential slave traders. As the story progresses, Adine must figure out if she truly is safe with these 'Freedom Fighters" or if they are merely slave traders in disguise. But everyone has their secrets and it's her job to figure them out.

I have to say, I quite enjoyed this short novel. Sitting at under 300 pages, I found myself gripped from the beginning. I've learned from Laura's other book, Her Keepers, that her writing style is quite simple and direct. So I was pleased to see that also transferred into this story. The simplicity and rawness of it allowed me to not be distracted by paragraphs upon paragraphs of descriptive words, but on the actual story itself. I've also enjoyed the narrative between characters and felt that it was smooth and flowed well with the plot. There was also plenty of development within the characters and the storyline which is something I've also enjoyed!

I read Her Keepers by LCM first, and was thoroughly excited by the story. So when I got ahold of her next book, I knew it would be a good one. It took way too long for me to get this review out but here it is:

Fallow, by LCM is an action/adventure novel set in the hot, dangerous desert. I wasn’t too sure how quickly I’d get through the story because it’s not my usual go-to genre, but it quickly grabbed me and swept me along—I read it in two days.

My highest praise goes to the storyline. I was fascinated by the history and direction of the plot, and the narrative that this book offered. I think more than anything, Fallow was a voice to bring to me awareness of a very certain type of struggle in history. The plot was gripping and invigorating and I absolutely loved the journey.

The characters were all very bold and unique, offering different perspectives all around that I found refreshing. Clear writing, simple dialogue, and good development from cover to cover.

Thank you for the read!
