Unicorn Magic

Rate this book
In Feyland, not everything is as it seems...
Feyland: a new computer game that allows Scottish teenager Corinne MacArthur to escape the sadness haunting her everyday life after losing a loved one. It's a game where legends come to life, the lines between reality and fantasy become blurred, and the impossible becomes - probable?

Unicorn Magic is the 1st story in the Celtic Fey series set in Anthea Sharp's Feyland universe (with her kind permission). A stand-alone short story with a full plot arc, Unicorn Magic was first published in the anthology Chronicle Worlds: Feyland.

This is a clean urban fantasy which is set in Scotland (and the faerie realm) and uses British English spelling and grammar.

Corrine is a lonely teenager in Scotland, Perthshire in fact, devastated after the death of her horse. To escape she plays an online fantasy roleplaying game, but this involves a simulation café to get an immersive VR experience.
When Corrinne spots a white unicorn among the pines and birches, her two worlds begin to collide, with exciting results.

This is a short story. While it doesn't end on a cliff-hanger, there is an excerpt from the next instalment which introduces a different kind of mount, and that cuts off abruptly. As a freebie this well-written tale has to be great value, and you can decide if you want to read more. If you're a teen who enjoys horses and fantasy, you probably will. I've read another couple of books by this author of Scots fiction, and I enjoy her fluid style and light touch.

I availed of a free download. This is an unbiased review.

This short story is a teaser for The Celtic Fey series, and I appreciate that. There’s nothing more annoying than investing time in a new series, only to find you really don’t like the writing, characters, plot etc. Unicorn Magic gives an excellent taster for the series, for only a small time investment, and left me wanting more. Job well done.
The writing is excellent, and the concept, for me, a real grabber. Scottish teen, Corrine, immerses herself in the virtual reality game ‘Feyland’, to escape her sorrow at the death of her beloved horse (I loved her already for that). She is also determined, self-reliant, and loyal – a strong central character.
The action inside VR is dangerous and challenging, and a little horrifying when the boundaries between Feyland and the real world blur a bit too much to be ignored. There are fey, the wild hunt, and, of course a unicorn to save Corrine and her mysterious friend, Elphin.
I have added the next book – Kelpie Curse – to my reading list.

I liked this short book very much, I found that the video game idea was great and I read it with interest. I was really attached to the main character and I think I will read the sequel as soon as possible

Note: Short Story/serial size.

After the death of her beloved horse Midnight, Scottish teenager Corinne seeks solace in the VR MMO game world of Feyland, which feels real to her, and populated with all sorts of fey creatures. After spying a minstrel entertaining the Bright king and his seelie court, she is chased, and rescued by a mysterious man with pockmarked orange skin. And she finds a unicorn which she is convinced is the subject of the quest she was on.

Set in the world of Anthea Sharp’s Feyland series (which I’ve read a couple books of already. It’s an excellent series, BTW. I love the idea that runs through all of the books that the game actually taps into the very real, unseen land ruled by the fey), this is a serial, telling a continuous story with each section being relatively short. I actually picked up Kelpie Curse first, and noticed that characters in it weren’t being introduced/described, so I had no idea who they were (specifically the minstrel, the Bright King, Elphin, and the Cailleach). Having read my way through this, I still have no real idea who Elphin is beyond being a mysterious guy who rescues her (at first I thought he was the minstrel, but in appearance they are completely different). And I still have no idea who the Cailleach is since she wasn’t even mentioned in this section. Corinne is obsessed with horses, to the point of dismissing or ignoring people around her as not being as interesting or as important as the horse. I have little patience for people like that. But Elphin is a potentially interesting character since he is under a curse and I do want to know more about him, even if Corinne isn’t interested in him since she’s more interested in the unicorn. At 69% I hit the end of the story and it went into the sample of the next book.

This is a cute, quick story that while I understand why the author wrote it the way that she did I kind of wished there were two versions (one this one for the anthology that had to be 5000 words and a second one that had more meat to it).
This book has so much potential I only feel like something is missing in it. It’s a lot of bones with little meat. Like I hope the rest of the series talks more about the game Feyland and who invented it, why is it popular, is she the only one who has access to the game? I am well aware it would be hard to fit all of that into 5000 words, but I wanted to know so much about the world which is a good thing because I was invested in the world. Like for what it is the world building is gorgeous and both cover versions are equally breathtaking.
I cannot wait to learn more about Elphin and Corine and the world of Feyland.

The 1 thing I don't like about teasers is that they're short and leave you wanting for more, even if they don't end in a cliff hanger like The Unicorn Magic but the good part is that it does save a lot of time and money investment if you don't end up liking that set of stories.

I was really intrigued by the element of how modern technology that is VR gaming was weaved into a story of myth and magic. As a teaser it definitely leaves you wanting for a lot more.

Can't wait to read the next adventure in this series.

Unicorn Magic by Roz Marshall is Book 1 in The Celtic Fey series. As such, it is a teaser, giving the background and introducing the main characters. Corinne MacArthur starts a visual reality computer game and is given her first challenge. As she moves around “Feyland” she starts to question if she is in, a game or in an altered reality.

The story development, the characters, and the dialog as sufficiently compelling for me to purchase the second book in the series. I needed to know what was going to happen next.

The premise to this story seems quite original, but this first instalment is short, very short. It’s more of an introduction to the game and there’s not much to build the characters’ identity before it ends. At only 23 pages the rest of the book is given over to an excerpt from the next book in the series. I feel that the complete series could be very interesting and original, but that this book would have been better combined as a prologue of sorts with the next book in the series. Anyone who ends their journey in Feyland with this book will soon forget what they have read.

A very short story of a girl who uses the VR game Feyland to escape from IRL problems. I didn't really feel invested in the story much, as not a lot really happened. I also didn't get much of a feel for Corinne's emotional state - I guess I expected there to be more emotion in how hard she was taking real life and loss. The in-game events felt like an introduction that ended just as it was getting going.

-I received a free copy of this ebook in a giveaway. This does not affect my review-

I love these Fey stories. This is a small sample of a complete story. I have read Fayland so I know what's going on, it is a game of virtual reality but sometimes the magic follows the gamer out of Fey Realms and effects their real life. I would have given the story a 5 if I didn't have to read 2 or 3 more short stories to know the whole story.

A girl grieving over the loss of her horse spend time in Feyland a virtuality game. Where she finds a very handsome bard and a very not good looking future friend. The story is short and ends on a cliffhanger, which will draw you into the next book. All in all a very good read, and can't wait to read the next one.

A very short story to introduce the Celtic Fey series. Corrine is a teenager who has just lost her horse Midnight. Using a video game to help her get through her grief, she feels as though the world of the game is very real. The characters are interesting and the suspense will draw you into reading the next book in the series.

I've been enjoying a number of books about gaming and virtual reality lately. As addictive to read as to play the game, I would imagine! But when the characters follow you into the real world, things could get complicated.

Enchanting and engrossing short tale about a horse-loving teenaged girl being introduced to the Magical Realm of Feyland. About overcoming sorrow and stumbling into a fated path riddled with fey creatures and magic.

Decently written story but not really my thing. The mystery of the magical online game didn't seem all that interesting, and I'm also not one for the horse-loving girl theme. Someone more interested in either would probably like it more, and maybe the rest of the series too.
