Once, in the Kingdom of Incendium, there were twelve princesses of the realm, each a dragon shifter. Each fiery and passionate. Each possessed of an appetite for pleasure that only her destined mate can satisfy. Twelve men are expected in Incendium, each with special powers of his own, each with the gift to claim one dragon princess’s heart forever.
Troy will do whatever is necessary to earn his freedom from solitary confinement on the penal colony of Xanto, even assassinate a princess of Incendium. Being a MindBender, he has a serious advantage as a predator and thinks the princess in question doesn’t have a chance. Only one of them can survive and Troy knows who it will be—until he meets Drakina.
Royal dragon shifter Drakina has a quest of her own, to seduce her destined mate and conceive the crown prince of Incendium. Her father will free her from all other responsibilities if she completes this one task. Drakina craves her independence enough to seduce the unattractive Terran who is the Carrier of the Seed. She’s sure it will be a quick seduction—until she meets Troy.
Worlds collide when Troy and Drakina meet, and passion flares. The attraction is so powerful that they both choose to put their goals aside for one night of passion together. When their respective secrets are revealed, will the truth turn one against the other? Or will destiny allow this star-crossed pair to save each other and their unborn son?

Deborah thinks a lot about publishing and writing, and also knits too much.
Deborah Cooke creates these unique worlds, and this time she takes us to the far side of the galaxy where two planets orbit a dying sun. The first and where are story will focus is Incendium, where a dragon-shifter king resides with twelve daughters. Regalia is their neighboring planet, and its Queen has twelve sons. Long embroiled in conflict the monarchs decide to put aside their differences and join through the marriage of one of their offspring. However, prophecies indicate that the oldest Drakina, the feisty, headstrong daughter must bear a son who is destined to save their planet. To do so, she must travel to Terra (Earth) in search of the Carrier of the Seed to get pregnant.
Enter Troy. Troy is from Terra where he was abducted because of his Mindbender abilities made a slave and forced to become an assassin for hire. Politics and fear of discovery from his captors land him in the penal colony of Xanto. Men of power and wealth place a wager and Troy ends up their pawn. If he completed the mission, he could gain his freedom. Failing will mean his death.
Both Drakina and Troy are well developed. She is snarky and will eat you if you piss her off. He is smart and lethal. I loved seeing them trade barbs and their sizzling chemistry curled my toes. I adore when characters have clear goals, but upon meeting, it all goes to hell in a hand-basket. It is always fun seeing how it all works out, even while worrying that something will go awry. I enjoyed watching the romance that developed. Cooke offered some laugh aloud moments allowing me to connect to these strong individuals.
Despite Cooke introducing this world, the length of the tale made things develop quickly. While this is dubbed book one, it read more like a prequel. I loved the Dragons, from the stubborn entitled Kings to the reader of prophecy. Some of the tidbits from pregnancy to diet were fabulously entertaining. I do marvel at Cooke’s vivid imagination.
Wyvern’s Mate is a complete story regarding the couple, but there is so much more to learn about these planets, their sun and the other planets in their galaxy.
Saskia Maarleveld once again narrates for Cooke, and she is such a perfect match for these stories. She captures Drakina’s personality, sets the pace, and her male voices aren’t raspy.
This novel was fun, funny, and endlessly hot. Cooke has taken an out of this world idea and woven it together with a rewarding relationship and some quite surprising twists to create a plot that kept me glued to the pages (or thinking about them when I had to get back to work). She left me a little broken inside at times, but the heartbreak was well worth the fantastic tale that I journeyed. Cooke’s world building was perfect. She allowed readers to picture the world and the events surrounding her characters, without taking away their ability to use their imagination. The history and politics of Incendium are presented without bogging down the plot. This was a fantastic start to hot new series. The relationship between the main characters sizzles while the action kept me on my toes.
And don’t even get me started on the characters. I’ve never met a character who could make me laugh while breaking my heart before. Cooke has developed the main characters of this tale so well and subtly that I felt as if I knew them personally without ever actually having to stop my journey to get to know them. They were the type of character that I could laugh & cry with, but also the type that I wanted to be. I love how strong they both were, but still with vulnerability. I also enjoyed the peek that we got at the royal house of Incendium, hinting towards future novels and placing our heroine into a greater context.
This may have been my first novel by this talented author, but it’s definitely sparked me to pop more of her work to the top of my TBR pile. I can’t wait for the sequel to this series or to delve further into other worlds that she’s created. If this novel is any indication, she will be quickly becoming a ‘go-to’ author for me.
Deborah Cooke’s first in her new Dragons of Incendium series is a masterful melding of Sci-Fi, Fantasy and Paranormal romance. Her cast of characters are colorful in dragon or human form, her imaginative world is both familiar and foreign and her stars, the defiant yet compassionate heroine and school of hard knocks hero, rock the universe. Her dialogue is fast paced and fluent and she completes her tale brilliantly in an economy of pages. I can’t wait for the next dynamic dragon tale!
The sultry voice of Saaskia Maarleveld is the perfect choice for Cooke’s debut Fantasy series in audible, staring Troy and Drakina the shape-shifting princess of Incendium. Listening to the novel enhances the enjoyment of Wyern’s Mate in multiple ways; one is learning the correct pronunciations another is the satisfying pace, inflections and emotional narration of Saaskia.
Drakina eldest of Incendium’s twelve dragon shape-shifting princesses has been offered a royal deal. Mate and conceive a royal heir with her destined mate and her father the king will never again ask anything of her. Drakina snaps up the deal, she does owe it to her kind, after all, to propagate the species and she’s only planning to mate and run. That is until she meets her match. After serving time on the Penal colony Xantos Troy has one chance to earn his freedom, it might not be the right thing to do, but he’s done worse and he’ll avoid execution. He’s agreed to complete a simple mission; kill a dragon-shifting princess. He doesn’t know why she’s supposed to die and he can’t afford to care. But everything changes when he meets her fiery highness.
I enjoyed reading Troy & Drakina's story. Both started with diverse expectations for their supposed chance meeting, most of the book is spent exposing both of their deepest wishes. While destiny played an important part of their story, it ended with them both making hard decisions based on their love for each other. Great HEA. While the book is definitely short, and the 144 pages in no way was filled with this story the 5 chapters were long in comparison. I read this via Kindle unlimited and am looking forward to reading the others. Well worth my time.
It was just okay for me. I listened and thought the narration was 5 stars, however the story kept me confused a lot of the time. The romance developed really fast and I wondered if the love was really just lust. At the end though, I felt better about that. It just seemed like things were told about, instead of shown at times and that kept the story very short-by design or that's the way the author planned it-not sure. It just needed more of everything-plot, character depth, romance, etc.
This book was an interesting twist on a dragon shifter story. For once we are seeing the heroine of the story as the royal, dragon shifter and the hero is a human with "special" abilities. While the story felt a little short, it did jump right into the action and move along at a good pace. I really enjoyed Troy's character and how he reacts to finding Drakina.
These two are not a traditional couple but it works. I really enjoyed the world that Deborah Cooke created in this book and I can't wait to read more from this series.
I really enjoyed reading about dragons in space. When I learned Deborah Cooke was writing this new series, I knew I had to read it. And I wasn't disappointed. I thoroughly enjoyed Wyvern's Mate, and Nero's Dream (included in the paperback version) made me anxious to read the next stories in this series.
More of an introduction then an actual book. I liked the beginning and am interested to see where the story goes but I didn't like how it just cut off.
To earn his freedom from solitary confinement on the penal colony of Xanto, Troy must assassinate a princess of Incendium. He thinks the princess doesn’t stand a chance since he is a mindbender. Her father has agreed to free her from all other responsibilities if she completes one task – Princess Drakina must seduce her destined mate and conceive the crown prince of Incendium. She is sure it will be a quick seduction and then she can return home and live the life she wants to live. But when all secrets are revealed, will the truth turn them against each other or will destiny allow this star-crossed pair to save each other and their unborn son?
Wow, this space dragon princess and her destined mate are attention grabbing characters that are strong and vivacious. Their encounter starts off with different goals and with underhanded intentions but the powerful attraction between them changes everything. The chemistry is electrical, the romance is fun, daring, sweet and passionate with an adventurous relationship that makes readers can really enjoy.
The plot is fast paced and full of exhilarating suspense, and a heroine whose personality leaps from the pages while Troy is the strong, sexy warrior. The story is full of unique elements in an engaging and fascinating world that make for a delightfully entertaining read that readers can’t put down.
Troy is a mindbender from Terra (Earth) who is captured by space pirates and is put into slavery. When he is caught committing the crimes he is forced to, he is sentenced to the mines at the prison planet. He is offered a chance to earn his freedom in the form of a gamble. If he kills Drakina, the wyvern princess from Incendium, he gets his freedom. The catch is he is made to look hideous to make it harder for him to attract her. Little does Troy know that he is being hunted by Drakina, who needs him because he is the carrier of the sperm that will fertilize her egg to give a male heir to the throne, and allow her freedom from having to marry. There is lots of action and intrigue. a wyvern is a dragon a mindbender is someone who can make any living thing bend to their will.
I am a huge Deborah Cooke fan. Mostly a fan of her Dragon Shifter novels and now the Flatiron 5 Contemporary novels.
Since Wyvern's Mate is a SciFi/Fantasy read it sat for ages waiting to be read. After the RTC Convention I received a free copy of the audio version of the book. Because I work a night shift Audio Books have become my new best friends and Wyvern's Mate is at the top of my new friends list.
It is sleek and sexy. Out of this world and down to earth. And as always, full of humour.
This story is a prime example of not letting a genre detour you from picking up book. You never know what journey it might take you on.
Troy is a Mindbender on death row sent to Earth to assassinate Drakina, he has to kill her within 48 hours or he will be killed. Drakina goes to Earth to find Troy, as he the Carrier of the Seed, destined to save Incidium. It's far fetched but also a fun quick read. Her dragon shifter nature and passion draws Troy like a moth to flame and while they both had other agendas they quickly realize it's more than just lust. This is a quick story but I think the series has possibilities.

A short story but in no way did it feel incomplete. I felt the last part about transforming his appearance to be handsome was not really necessary. Even though it was mentioned several times the the hero was ugly, the breaking of the curse felt like like an afterthought. There was no hint beforehand that his appearance was cursed. And even before the end, Drakina found him attractive because of his personality and character.

Won this here on goodreads. Great book for a quick read - not too heavy or detailed. Winning mix of drama, romance, humor and fantasy. Loved it! Looking forward to reading more from Deborah Cooke!
Troy and Drakina are brought together by fate each having their own motives. But if fate is involved things don't go exactly by the book. I loved watching these characters develop and see that life is not always black and white. Great start to this series. Excited to read more by Deborah Cooke.
This was a delightful romantic book 📚, I found Drakina and Troy's romance wonderfully entertaining. I can't wait for more from this author. I received this book as a FREE copy to read and I voluntarily leave this review.
Goes down as another off my 2016 Bookworm Bingo Challenge – A book about Sci-fi. Well this is more sci-fi with a paranormal mix but I’m counting it anyway. Great promise with these bold, sassy, intriguing characters. Good start to the series that looks to be an interesting collection of dragon mate stories. Something to remember is that beauty is only skin deep. It’s a persons’ inner character that makes them appealing.
Drakina’s planet is in trouble; it is being slowly pulled, along with their closet neighbour planet, closer to their sun. She has been told that she must travel to Terra (Earth) in search of the Carrier of the Seed to get pregnant. Somehow her son is meant to be the saviour for them all – though how that is meant to happen she has no idea. To say she is not best pleased with this plan would be an understatement. The last time she followed her fathers plan things didn’t go so well; what with the first born son from the next planet over standing her up at altar. Which wasn’t his smartest move as she then goes and eats him while in a rage which causes a bit of a diplomatic situation. Being a dragon shifter she has always had a hot head but that might have been too far. Her father has a new deal for her though, one that should appeal to her need for independence. If she goes to the carrier and gets pregnant – after her son is born of course – she can then go and do as she pleases. No more responsibilities for being firstborn daughter to the king. This is a deal she can’t back out of so takes the offer. Only to a few moments later wonder whether she can change her mind after she sees a picture of the carrier – Troy. If he’s meant to be named after Helen of Troy the face that launched a thousand ships she can’t see it. It’s not his appearance she needs to focus on though only his seed and she will get it by any means necessary.
Troy was abducted from Earth and sold into trade on the black-market to be an assassin years ago due to his rare gift. He is the best mindbender in the galaxy but having this gift has caused him nothing but trouble lately. After completing a mission he was forced to do he now finds himself on a planet where he will be executed unless he completes one last task. Do this one thing and he can go free – yeah well if you believe that then you will believe anything. All he has to do is kill a dragon shifter princess called Drakina. Just get into her mind and get the job done, simple right? Well it might have been before he saw her walk into the bar. Being sent back down to his home town on Earth, even with looking different due to a curse, was the first thing that almost made him lose focus but seeing her in all her glory and beauty he only knows one thing – he must have her. He just had no idea that that was Drakina’s plan all along too.
The chemistry between them is seen from the start. Drakina might think his appearance is off putting at first but that’s before he is close enough for her to notice his mouth – one that looks very appealing and kissable to her. His confidence is striking and the pull for each other is so strong that it’s not long before they are up in his room. This is where the fun starts, only not how you’re thinking. Troy makes the mistake in thinking Drakina won’t notice if someone is in her head but when he sees her reaction (turning into a dragon, smashing out a window and then flying off with him) he won’t be making that same mistake again. After trying to calm her down he realises how strong the connection is between them. He wants to get to know her and she feels a strong closeness to him also, something stronger than both of them drawing them together. They only have a short window to complete each of their missions and with both having a different agenda you wonder who is going to win this round. That might not their only problem, as there are those that conspire against them that will do everything in their power to pull them apart. Their romance was written in the stars and so is their future. They just have to decide what planet that future is on. Here’s looking for a fun ride in their future with lots of twists and turns – well what else would there be if you have a dragon to ride. All Troy’s boyhood dreams have come true in one fell swoop the moment his eyes fell on Drakina.
Fun, light read with a bit of sci-fi and paranormal romance mixed in. Great start to series and I can’t wait to see what Gemma gets up to. She seems very cunning and can see an end game no one else can just yet.

REVIEW: 3.5 stars-- WYVERN’S MATE is the first installment in Deborah Cooke’s adult THE DRAGONS OF INCENDIUM romantic, fantasy series focusing on the twelve dragon shifter princesses of Incendium. This is eldest sister Drakina, and Mindbender Troy’s story line-a fated romance where Troy is expected to assassinate the royal princess.
Told from dual third person perspectives WYVERN’S MATE introduces some of the characters, the history and the tepid truce between the planets of Incendium, and Regalia, and the royal decree whereby the twelve dragon princesses of Incendium will be betrothed to the twelve gifted princes of Regalia. When things don’t go according to plans, Drakina finds herself ordered to Earth where she will find the ‘Carrier of the Seed’-the one male able to fertilize the dragon’s egg that she carries so that she is able to birth the next generation of royal dragons. What ensues is a building relationship between Drakina and Troy- a relationship that could very well end Drakina’s life.
For fans of Cooke’s previous series about dragons, THE DRAGONS OF INCENDIUM is NOT connected to, or a spinoff from, her best selling Dragonfire series. The current series focuses on female dragon shifters searching for their ‘HeartKeeper’-their mate- but the princes of Regalia are not necessarily the male that calls to the princesses hearts. The world building reveals the potential doom and fallout if no royal heir is to be conceived, and the possible destruction of two planets pulled into the heat of their sun.
WYVERN’S MATE is a quick read; a fast paced novella length story of romance and love; duty and honor; magic and dragons. The character building is limited-I would have preferred more background information about Drakina, and Troy-especially as it concerned Troy’s time imprisoned at Xanto-the who, what and why. The premise is entertaining-almost science fiction is its presentation; the characters are colorful and animated; the romance is a quick build to a happily ever after. A wonderful start to a new series.
Audiobook Review: 5-star rating for its originality and conflicted characters!
Knowing both the narrator and author in a historical romance setting, it was a little hard to shift gears. Nevertheless, the story caught my attention and held lots of appeal.
Drakina, the first of the princesses of Incendium, is pretty much like any rebellious daughter when parents lay down the law. But Drakina is not a human, but a dragon shifter and comes from a planet more highly advanced than Terran, which we know as earth.
Her father’s astrologers have foretold Drakina must journey to Terran where the carrier who carries the seed is. Her body must be impregnated by this seed to bear a royal egg, a child destined to save the kingdom.
Drakina is obstinate, doesn’t want to do her duty, but is told this is the last thing she must do for the kingdom. Then she would have her freedom. Again, this sounds suspiciously like our teenagers of today! Drakina, knowing this, says she will not marry him, but will bear the royal prince. She sees her freedom ahead of her, therefore, prepares for the journey, learning several languages, and does what she must to ‘fit’ in.
Drakina is such a beauty with a curvaceous, voluptuous body that no matter if her clothes and speech fit in the small town of St. Anthony, she does not. Troy is drawn in like bee to nectar.
Troy is aware the princess wants him. He, in fact, is returned to earth to destroy her. By so doing, he gains his freedom from the penal colony where he’d been for the last ten years. If he fails, he will be executed.
Both Troy and Drakina have every reason to succeed in their individual quests--the stakes are high on both sides. Drakina is intrigued by Troy and decides to draw out her time with him--she has 48 hours. Troy is captured by not only her beauty, but her spirit and finds joy in her dragon form. So what to do? Can either do what they set out to do?
I hope you enjoy this story where galactic justice just may prevail and two souls find true love.
Wyvern's Mate is the first book in the Dragons of Incendium series by Deborah Cooke (who also writes as Claire Delacroix and Claire Cross).
It's the story of Drakina, the eldest daughter and a Princess of Incendium. She is a dragonshifter. Her planet is in peril and the royal astrologers have said that she must have a child, and that child will be the saviour of the planet. They tell her who she is to mate with, the seed carrier, and she is horrified to learn that he is a very ugly, although well built, human on Earth. Her father, the King, tells her that all she has to do is mate with the man, then she can leave him, never see him again. She just has to get the seed from him and her duty is done. He will never ask anything of her again. Knowing she must do all she can to save her home, and with the enticement of freedom afterwards, she agrees to the plan, and heads for Earth.
The seed carrier isn't just a normal human being though. He is a mindbender. A person who can get others to do what he wills them to. He has been on a penal colony on another planet, accused of an assassination that although he carried out, it was under orders. He has been given a reprieve. Somebody wants him to meet Drakina and murder her. If he does that, he will be granted his life and freedom. He doesn't know Drakina, and he certainly doesn't know that he is her destiny with regards being a seed carrier. He is more than happy to earn his freedom.
When they meet on Earth both have their own plan in mind, but neither of them count on the hot instant attraction they feel for each other. Drakina just wants sex immediately, she wants the seed and she wants to move on with her life. Troy, the seed carrier, wants to have slow, thorough sex with her, and wants to enjoy his time with her before he has to kill her. They end up spending time together, and both start questioning if they can go through with their plan. Can Drakina just leave Troy once she is pregnant, never to see him again? Can Troy be intimate with her, only to turn around and kill her so that he can live? And what of Drakina's planet's destiny, how can it be saved if Drakina is murdered?
The only way to find out the answers is to read the book. If you are like me, you will thoroughly enjoy it. The authors descriptions of the dragons, especially Drakina, enables you to really picture her in your minds eye. The histories of both Troy and Drakina have you wanting both to get their way, but how can it happen? This story was short and sweet, but full of content, sassy daughters, angry dragons, betrayed men, and of course passion and love. I can't wait for the next book in the series.
I was given a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
The first book in a brand new series by Deborah Cooke was fast paced and passi0nate. The plot line was strong and well developed. I was never bored. I enjoyed watching the two characters come together and fall in love. Their chemistry was strong and they were a good match. Princess Drakina is sent to Earth to seduce Troy and get pregnant. If she can do that, then her family would leave her alone and allow her to have her independence. Troy is not attractive at all (because of a spell) and she thinks this seduction will be a bit of a trial. He has been sent to earth to kill the princess and if he does, then he will live, if he fails he will be executed. When they meet at a bar the chemistry is instantaneous and powerful. They both decide (subconsciously) to put off their plans and just enjoy a moment with the other. They dance, flirt, and kiss passionately. When they go up to his hotel room things heat up and some of their secrets are inadvertently revealed. She is furious he is MindBender, someone who can manipulate people through their thoughts, and he just keeps trying to charm her. They get to know each other, return to his family home, and when they come together they are very passionate. I won't spoil the ending of the story, but needless to say it was sweet and happy. Now, my one negative about this story; Troy was a human who was kidnapped, became a slave, then an assassin, and ended up in a mining penal colony. He has been going through this for 10 years, yet he doesn't seem affected by his experiences. He isn't cold, angry, not trusting, or scarred. If he was a slave, he should have had evidence of abuse. If he was an assassin, which means he would have had some sort of training, he should have been more violent and cold. If he had been held in a horrible penal colony, there should have been some sort of evidence (besides the tattoo). Because of these aspects that he was missing he came off a bit flat. When we get to see him and watch him with Drakina, there was no evidence that he went through any of it, besides his retelling when the truth came out. I wanted him to be more rough around the edges and more of a fighter. I enjoyed this short read, the ebook is under 100 pages, and I do recommend it to any who love Deborah Cooke's of dragon series, and anyone who likes a fast paced love story. The series has potential and there will be at least 12 books in the series. I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
Deborah Cooke thrills again in this exciting romance! Wyvern's mate is a heart pounding mix of adventure, romance, and action. The hero, Troy, is a mind-bender who is strong, determined, and will melt any readers heart. To escape imprisonment and death, he's sent back to his homeland to complete one task - to slay a dragon princess. After years of hard labor, including completing executions for his ruthless captors, Troy cleverly plans how to earn her trust to ensure he' can complete this last mission and gain his freedom. What he doesn't expect, however, is just how far he will fall for the Dragon Princess. With his life and her life on the line, only one of them will be able to survive.
Drakina is stubborn, headstrong, and determined to win her freedom from her family. The oldest of a brood of dragons, she is responsible for providing a male heir to her father's throne. After her pending wedding doesn't go as planned, her father sends her on a quest to find the seed which will sire his grandson and future heir. Drakina is furious at the errand, but agrees knowing that by completing this lat task for her father she may gain her freedom. What she doesn't know is that completing the errand may cost her her life. It also may cost her her heart.
For lovers of romance, adventure, and science fiction, this book is a must read! A sci-fi passion is a must as the story includes multiple worlds and characters with superhuman powers and who transform shape. Debrorah Cook delivers a gripping story which makes the novel hard to put down.
I listened to the audiobook version, read by Saskia Maarleveld, which was outstanding! Saskia Maarleveld has a beautiful voice that is clear, easy to listen to and adds character to the story. She is one of my favorite narrators out there and to listen to her tell a tale is a true delight. The combination of an amazing narrator and an amazing author makes this novel a must listen-to story!
Disclosure: I received a free copy of the audiobook in return for an honest review.
"Wyvern's Mate" by Deborah Cooke. Book 1 in the Dragons of Incendium novella series.
A quick and fast story about a dragon princess, Drakina, and her destined human mate, Troy. This is a sci-fi novella romance series and is no way related to The Dragonfire series Ms. Cooke writes.
The basis of this novella series is that there are 12 dragon princesses of Incendium and each will be getting a mate throughout the series. The overall story arc is that the planet of Incendium and Regalia are getting too close to their sun and an alliance has been made between Incendium and Regalia to find a solution to the problem.
In this debut novella, Drakina must mate with her destined mate and conceive a son who is prophesied to help save their planet. Drakina has no intention of staying with Troy once she has what she needs. But when she gets to know him, she realizes that Troy just might be worthy of being her Consort forever. But Troy's intentions are more devious. He's an assassin out to kill Drakina in order to gain his freedom. Will they both discover the truth about each other in time to avoid disaster?
LOL! Yes, of course they do! I liked this little story. It was fast and fun to read. The characters are quirky and interesting. The only issue I had with the story is that most of the story happens on earth. Being a sci-fi romance I thought more would happen on the planet of Incendium. Other than that, I liked the story.
Will I be reading the next one? Not sure yet. After checking the website for the series, this novella series will be a combination of novellas with a short story released between each book. I will read the first short story that comes out and make a decision after that to see if I'm still curious to see what happens in the rest of the series.
Wyvern's Mate is a paranormal romance with lots of heart and insatiable appetites. It is the first in the Dragons of Incendium series by Deborah Cooke. The overall premise of the series is that there are 12 princesses in the Kingdom of Incendium, all of whom are dragon shifters and each princess possessing an unique ability to find her one soulmate through time and space.
Wyvern's Mate is Drakina's story, the oldest of the dragon-shifter-princesses from space. She wants nothing to do with the kingdom and her father agrees to give her the freedom she so desperately desires if she seduces her destined mate and conceive the crown prince of Incendium. Two problems stand in her way: (1) her destined mate, Troy, is an unattractive Terran and (2) Troy is a slave who will be granted his freedom if he assassinates Drakina and if he is unsuccessful he will be executed. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that when the pair meet, fireworks and passion ignite. The only question left is who will survive.
I listened to the Audible version of this book narrated by Saskia Maarleveld who was outstanding. Her smooth overtones and subtle character nuances made for a very enjoyable experience. Her style is very natural that makes it easy to become totally immersed listening to the book. If you are like me and are fascinated by dragons, plus enjoy reading or listening to a good romance novel, I recommend you give Wyvern's Mate a try.
I'm a huge fan of Deborah's dragon books, and when I heard she was doing a new series with women dragon shifters, I was very intrigued. I love the sci-fi feel of these, with the dragon realm being on another planetary realm, and Deborah did an amazing job with the romantic tension in this first installment of the Dragons of Incendium.
Drakina must join with her prophesied carrier and conceive a son who is set to be the crown prince and the savior of their planet. However, the dragon princess has no intention of staying with the human once she's gotten what she's after. But when she gets to know him, she realizes that Troy is her heartmate, not just her baby daddy. Unfortunately, the man's intentions for the princess are nefarious.. He's bartered to get out of prison in exchange for the dragon's life. But once he meets her, he knows he'll never be able to do it, and his life might just be worth a few moments of pleasure in her arms.
Drakina and Troy's journey of discovery is rife with surprises and will keep you riveted. The only reason I didn't give the book the 5th star was because it was very short and left me feeling as if the story were rushed a bit. Someting to be expected with novellas, however. I'm looking forward to listening to more, as Saskia is perfect for the narration of these tales!
Received an ARC for an honest review. There now that the business side of this is taken care of OMG this book was fabulous. Too short by far and I want more now please. I would have enjoyed having more than just a couple hours of reading material but this novella offers so much in spite of it short length. I found Drakina and Troy to be very exciting to get to know and hopefully more of their story will reveal itself in the successive books. They were engaging to me but also engaging to each other I found that I wanted more for them and me. It would really be wonderful to find that these stories were proven to be true. I mean who hasn't wished there were truly dragons in the world or people who could be magical or better yet be magical ourselves. I was a little disappointed when I read the hype on this series that it would not connect to the dragon stories here on earth but they are so different that they have created their own place on my brain self next to the other much loved books already there. This series after only 1 installment have proven to be one that I anxiously wait the next portion. Thanks to Deborah Cooke and her wonderful imagination
