Korean history wasn't my strong suit after living abroad for many years, but I thought it would be good to know at least some basic history of my native land. It is a well-written, abridged stories of the 27 kings who ruled the Chosun dynasty. The beginning started off well with the Lee ruling the country and they were focused on making the country better for the people. However, as the story went on, the kings and nobles were blinded by power, and the local officials were corrupt that it took a toll on the civilians. As greed becomes prominent, more people suffer and government no longer functions to serve the suffering people and the malicious cycle continues. It was devastating to see that the dynasty started off so strong with their determinations but later on, the kings lost all powers and authority to foreign invaders. I believe, in a way, that Confucius belief made the kings reluctant to trade with overseas, learn new technology, and explore the world which would have allowed Korea to be a much stronger country than it is now.

The book explains well about Joseon Kings. Before reading this book, I didn't know some Joseon kings, but this book made me learn about Joseon history more and more. Stories about the Joseon kings are very interesting, and I enjoyed this book.
