Mari Jungstedt is a Swedish journalist and popular crime fiction author.

Jungstedt worked as a reporter on Swedish national public radio and television, and was an occasional presenter on TV4's daily talk show Förkväll.

Her first three novels are set on the island of Gotland and feature Detective Superintendent Anders Knutas and the journalist Johan Berg. Two of her novels were filmed for Swedish TV, and her work has been translated into English by Tiina Nunnally.

Mari Jungstedt lives in Stockholm. Her husband comes from Visby, Gotland, and they spend their summers on Gotland.

Me gusta esta saga porque son libros ligeritos y que se leen en un santiamén. Para mí gusto falta que profundizara un poco más la autora en la vida de Knutas, a menudo parece más protagonista el periodista que el inspector.
El caso a resolver en este libro me ha tenido enganchada y el final te deja en vilo, así que hay que leer el siguiente si o si 😊

Finalizada. Edición digital. Tercera entrega de la serie de Gotland con el comisario Knutas. No son unas novelas apasionantes, pero consiguen crear ese ambiente que te empuja a leer más para saber qué ha pasado. Tendremos asesinatos de humanos y animales muy peculiares, pero al final todo queda aclarado. Si bien se pueden leer en cualquier orden, es verdad que la historia de los diferentes protagonistas va evolucionado, por lo que recomiendo seguir el orden de publicación. Nota 3,5/5. FIN.

I love the setting of this series and would love to visit Visby one day, the photos on Google are beautiful. The author has created an interesting cast of characters in this series and the books are well translated. I found the details on Nordic mythology which underpins the plot fascinating.

My review in one word: generic.

My review in probably too many words:

I will first admit that I was a bit hesitant about this book at first. A female Swedish journalist writing mystery novels featuring a journalist reminded me a bit too much of Liza Marklund, of whom I'm not a big fan. And then there is the setting for her series of novels: Gotland, a Swedish summer destination island with a year-round population of about 60,000. A series with multiple serial murderers in such a setting requires a Murder-She-Wrote level of suspension of disbelief that I have difficulty with.

Jungstedt manages a pretty decent little serial murder plot, if gruesome and a bit cliched. Unfortunately, she doesn't introduce enough characters to make it all that hard to guess who the bad guy is going to be. She spends the time instead in attempts to develop her main characters' lives, which I appreciate. However, I never really found them all that believable or full.

Ultimately, she's just not a very skillful author, perhaps stuck in her past with a newspaper-like style rather than tight, beautiful prose. (For example, I lost count of the number of female characters whose hair styles and outfits were detailed as we were introduced to them.) Immediately after reading this book, I picked up the new William Tappley "Brady Coyne" novel, and was truly struck by the difference a talented author can make with a mystery.

The verdict? A decent little novel for reading on the beaches of Gotland on summer break with a drink. But not something I'd go out of my way to choose otherwise.

I wish I could give this two and a half stars instead of just two, but 'Inner Circle' just falls apart. The most important scenes are still taking place off the page, which would be fine, but suddenly Emma and Johan are back together (sort of, she divorced Olle, even though in the last book she told Johan to have a nice life) while I had hoped it was the last I'd see of Emma. Nope. I wanted to read a mystery, but what Jungstedt served was something more akin to J.D. Robb/Nora Roberts.
The book ends of a cliffhanger...sort of, depends if you care about Emma and Johan. I don't, I read the series for Knuties and there's less of him in this volume than ever. I won't be continuing the series, for me, it ended in a good enough place.

Resumen:
Otro caso más del inspector Anders Knutas. La historia comienza con la aparición del cadáver de un poni decapitado en el bosque. Por otro lado, debido a que nos encontramos en verano se está llevando a cabo un curso de arqueología en la isla. Una de las alumnas del curso, desaparece dramáticamente. Todo parece indicar que nos encontramos ante algún tipo de ritual. ¿Pero están relacionados ambos hechos?

Opinión:
Este libro sigue la línea de los anteriores de la saga. Tiene muy buen ritmo y es una lectura bastante ligera. A mi particularmente, me gusta leer los libros de esta autora a la vez que otros más complejos.

Otra cosa que me gusta es que no hay demasiadas historias secundarias que pueden hacernos perder el hilo del caso principal, podemos destacar una que se va relatando a la vez que el caso principal.

Los distintos casos que vamos viendo a lo largo de esta serie de libros me parece que están bastante bien. Hasta el momento no se repiten temas, lo que es de agradecer y hace que con cada libro me quede con ganas de saber más y ponerme a leer el siguiente.

De goden verzoeken is het derde verhaal wat zich op het Zweedse eiland Gotland afspeelt met hoofdcommissaris Anders Knutas en tv-journalist Johan Berg in de hoofdrollen. Een pony wordt door twee meisjes gevonden met het hoofd eraf gesneden. Het hoofd is nergens te vinden. Wel blijkt, dat er bloed was afgetapt. Later wordt er een meisje uit Nederland vermist, een archeologiestudente, Martina Flochten. Ze werkt mee aan de opgraving van een haven uit de Vikingtijd. Ze wordt een paar dagen later gevonden, vermoord. Ook bij haar is bloed afgetapt. Ze is op drie verschillende manieren om het leven gebracht. Wat is het verband? Zijn het rituele moorden? Ook iemand uit de gemeenteraad van Visby wordt vermoord aangetroffen. Heeft het met de bouw van een hotelcomplex te maken op Gotland. De vader van Martina Flochten is architect en heeft het hotelcomplex ontworpen. Is dat de link?

Anders Knutas, hoofdcommissaris en Johan Berg, tv- journalist houden zich allebei met de zaak bezig. Knutas roept de hulp in van de rijksrecherche en een profiler uit Stockholm. Knutas kan door het onderzoek niet mee op vakantie met zijn gezin naar Denemarken. Johan Berg woont tegenwoordig op Gotland, zodat hij dichtbij Emma kan zijn, die zwanger is van hun kindje. Alleen Emma weet niet of ze het kind alleen wil opvoeden of ze ook Johan hierbij moet betrekken. Er zijn al zo veel veranderingen geweest door de scheiding, dat haar kinderen een beetje rust nodig hebben.

De goden verzoeken is een leuk en spannende verhaal. De omgeving van Gotland wordt door Mari Jungstedt prachtig beschreven. Visby en omgeving wordt nu meer belicht. Het verhaal begint met opgravingen van schatten uit de tijd van de Vikingen. Hier heeft Mari Jungstedt ook veel onderzoek naar gedaan. In een interview las ik, dat ze iedere plek, waarover ze schrijft, zelf wil bezoeken. Ze controleert ook of alle feiten juist zijn. Het blijkt, dat hoofdpersoon Knutas echt bestaat. Dit las ik in een interview: 'Ik heb Knutas ontmoet'. Hij is de politieman waar ik, toen ik aan mijn eerste boek begon, als eerste contact mee had. De Knutas in mijn boeken lijkt echt heel veel op hem. Stukjes van mijzelf zijn terug te vinden in Johan en Emma', vervolgt Jungstedt. 'in Johan gebruik ik al mijn jaren als tv-journalist en in Emma vind je mijn gedachten en twijfels.' Ze dringt diep door in het leven van haar personages. Twijfels, angsten, onzekerheden, jeugdtrauma's en verdriet maken deze thriller herkenbaar voor iedereen. Waardering: 4*.

“Nadie lo conoce” es un libro, entretenido. Tiene unos protagonistas entrañables, a los que ya hemos conocidos en las anteriores entregas de la saga de Gotland.
Sipnosis:
Una excavación arqueológica, extraños ritos vikingos, una joven que desaparece y la isla de Gotland sumida de nuevo en el horror y la consternación.
La nueva novela de Mary Jungstedt promete más de un susto a sus lectores y permite también conocer más de cerca a sus protagonistas, sobre todo a Johan Berg.
Mari Jungstedt vuelve a combinar magistralmente el desarrollo de la investigación policial y las peripecias personales de sus protagonistas en este tercer caso del comisario Anders Knutas y el periodista Johan Berg. El comisario Anders Knutas, tras la resolución de su anterior caso, en el que estuvo personalmente implicado, está agobiado y deprimido. Bueno honestamente amo este genero de libros pero no me sentí especialmente conectada con la narración de la autora (probablemente debido a la traducción). No puedo creer que un libro proveniente de la descrita "una de las autoras más reconocidas de la novela negra" haya dedicado más de 130 páginas donde lo único terrible que paso fuera la muerte de un pony ( no es spoiler, pasa en la página 20 ). Básicamente sus mismos personajes hablan de lo ridículo que es dedicar recursos a la investigación de un pony muerto, si tus mismos personajes sienten que esto es ridículo creo que no debiste alargar tanto el argumento.
Los protagonistas son el detective y un reportero (que pasa la mayor parte de su tiempo hablando de su enamorada y muy muy muy poco de su tiempo es dedicado a su investigación), por otra parte el detective Knutas no es exactamente muy activo en este libro. No me mal interpreten, me agrado el libro pero sentí en varias ocasiones que divagaban demasiado tanto la narración como los personajes, en fin, al menos esto se compensa con la presentación de los capítulos.

Si eres fanático de la mitología nórdica este libro te agradara. En cuanto a términos de oscuridad, no considero especialmente horribles o impactantes los asesinatos o los asesinos.
Lo que me agradó del libro fue la descripción del escenario, sentí una atracción inmediata por Suecia; las descripciones de los lugares y las personas en general resultan bastante creíbles.


Probablemente habría disfrutado mas este libro de haber leído los anteriores, descubrí muy tarde que este era el tercer de cuatro libros, tendré que leer mas de esta autora para poder describir con mayor seguridad su narración.

I like my 2nd hand book sales because you get to buy missing books in your collection, better editions of books you already have or get to know new writers for a wee amount of money.
And so this Scandinavian thriller came into my hands, a third book in a series which does not matter as the writer is skilled enough to round of the various characters descriptions. The book in itself is a straight forward thriller, reading the cover one might expected a more x files-esque story but no such luck.
People get killed and the police are baffled as are the media, only for this one smart journalist. The whole story turns around a archaeological dig and the potential build of a hotel on the Swedish Island Gotland. One would expect that any policeman would be able to ask the right questions when it comes to the cult-like descriptions of the killings, which happens in the last part of the novel. Which annoyed me a lot. The book however was an easy read and with the next 2nd hand market I will undoubtedly return the book to the general public as it is worth easily the 50 cents I paid for it.

Deckare om rituella mord med anknytning till det fornnordiska. Helt ok deckare, man får vad man vill ha, lättläst och underhållande för stunden. Fast det är gaska förutsägbart så gillar jag det här upplägget även om jag inte kommer komma ihåg den så länge.

Addictive & absorbing: the Anders Knutas Crime thrillers are a must read:
The Anders Knutas Series, written by Mari Jungstedt and translated from the Swedish to English by Tiina Nunnally, is an addictive nine-book series for reader who are captivated, like me, with Crime Mysteries and Thrillers.
My review is of the entire series, which I have just newly finished. From "Unseen", the first novel in the series, to "The Fourth Victim", the ninth novel, each boast superb plots, twists and turns and fabulously intriguing characters. I have no intention of summarising each book's plot: they each contain a brief summary inside the fly cover. Personally I avoid reading the summary, as I feel it gives too much away about the content of the novel. Other readers might find the summary useful. The publishers clearly think so.
The strength of the series is such that no one book is better than another: they are each a brilliant and totally absorbing read. As with other Swedish writers of this genre the novels are so distinctively different from English and American novels of the same ilk.
The series is based on the picturesque island of Gotland, Sweden's largest island and the annual summer influx of masses of tourists makes for an interesting setting. The capital of Gotland is Visby, which possesses an excellently preserved medieval wall, as well as most of the Island's native population (and crime). It is around Visby that the novels are largely centred. The author, Mari Jungstedt, makes full use of the Island's variable geography, rural economy and proximity to other Baltic counties in the books. The Island's very changeable seasonal weather is also used by the author to good effect from novel to novel.
The characters are very much three-dimensional, as are their lives and relationships with one another. These relationships can become complex at times which only adds spice to the stories.
There are four main characters: Chief Superintendent Anders Knutas (or "Knutie" as he is affectionately known to some, much to his annoyance); Karin Jacobsson (Knutas's Deputy); Johan Berg (Regional TV Reporter for Swedish TV) and Pia, Johan's very ambitious photographer, who will stop at nothing to get the best photo or film footage.
The novels can be read independently, as they each contain sufficient information about earlier events, to prevent the reader from getting lost. However, in my view, they are best read in sequence to fully grasp the development of both characters and relationships.
The variety and originality of the plots (and sub-plots) makes this one of the best crime series written by a Swedish author. Let's face it, the Swedes boast an abundance of literary talent in this field, and Mari Jungstedt is at the very top of the crop of their talented authors.
Buy a copy of "Unseen" and start reading. I fell for Jungstedt's easy flowing distinctive narrative from the start and then ploughed my way through all, currently translated, books in the series.
Unfortunately the books aren't cheap to buy (not at the date of this review anyway), either in paperback or Kindle, which is a pity since it makes them less affordable and hence accessible to all readers. I was lucky, as my local library had every book available to read in electronic form via Borrowbox.
But even at the prices quoted on Amazon you are guaranteed novels of quality. And, as Amazon point out, the price is set by the publisher, not Amazon themselves.
A treat to read, each novel is fully deserving of the Five Star rating I have given them. I am certain that you will agree.

DEN INDERSTE KREDS

Endnu en elegant og velturneret krimi i Mari Jungstedts Gotland-serie. En gruppe arkæologistuderende fra forskellige lande deltager i et udgravningskursus på Gotlands vestkyst. Under den hede højsommersol graver de med hakker og skeer og finder en havn fra Vikingetiden, som viser sig at være rig på fund.

Men det bliver ikke det eneste fund, de gør. Tæt på udgravningen finder de liget af den unge hollandske studerende, Martina. Mærkerne på hendes krop tyder på, at mordet har rituelle undertoner. Politiinspektør Ander Knutas og hans kolleger undersøger om den unge kvindes død har nogen sammenhænge med en halshugget hovedløs hest, som blev fundet på en fold af nogle småpiger tidligere på sommeren.

Da hesten hoved dukker op - spiddet på en pæl - vokser mystikken yderligere. Sagen får stor opmærksomhed fra medierne, og journalisten Johan Berg følger hændelserne på tæt hold. Samtidig forsøger han at få forholdet til Kæresten, Emma at fungere. Alt imens en snæver kreds af mennesker for at udøve deres tro i det skjulte.

Anmeldelse:

Kriminalkommissær Knutas og journalisten Johan bringes igen sammen af to sager om en halshugget hest og en myrdet arkæologistuderende - Afsløringen af en kreds asa-troende giver sammenhæng med forbrydelserne, og det bliver farligt for opdagerne.

Muligvis ved de lokale indbyggere, der ikke er personlig involverede, godt der foregår noget med det er altid en velbevaret hemmelighed hvem der er med i sådanne sekter. Man er bange for repressalier. Samtidig opdager to små piger en hest er dræbt og hovedet mangler.

Det dukker dog snart op hos Martinas chef, som i rædsel flygter. Han ved godt hvad det betyder. Som altid Skriver Mari Jungstedt fantastisk og jeg vil ikke tøve med at give bogen mine varmeste anbefalinger. Det kan da godt være at bogen udkom helt tilbage i 2008, men det gør bestemt ikke historien dårligere.

Og som jeg har skrevet tidligere så kan de svenske krimiforfattere noget med et godt plot og fantastisk spænding.

Mari Jungstedt was a new name for me in my exploration of Scandinavian noir. She writes in one setting, Gotland, Sweden’s largest island off the southeast edge of Sweden, and features Inspector Anders Knutas. In this case, he investigates the mysterious death of Martina Flochten, a young Dutch archaeology student, in Gotland for a summer of research. She is found, hanging from a tree, with wounds to her lower abdomen and hardly any blood left in her body. At nearly the same time, a Gotland pony is discovered in its owner’s paddock, beheaded. The head later appears, on a stick, in front of the house of the next victim. Yes, we have a serial killer on our hands and not just of people! Jungstedt gives us a short course on Gotland history and we learn more and more about Swedish mythology as Knutas and his allies get deeper into the case. There is a parallel case of Johan and Pia, a network news team on Gotland who, since Gotland is not a great source of stories, are assigned to cover the murder of Flochten and the killing of the horses. Johan is under stress because his wife is tired of his assignments and wants him home more often. (She comes off as somewhat possessive and nasty.) Pia is a tough camerawoman, just trying to do the job. They almost turn into detectives themselves as they interview suspects and victims’ relatives but they don’t often confer with Knutas. As usual in Scandinavian noir, there are affairs and cross-relations galore that add to the fun. The fact that the island was once a Viking hangout in the 11th century makes it even more intriguing. When the plot turned toward an occult circle of associates and friends, it became a bit tedious for me, but it fit into the spirit of the whole and the ritualistic nature of the murders and horse killings all made sense in that context. Not at all an unsatisfactory introduction to Jungstedt for me, and a good representative of the genre.

The Inner Circle by Mari Jungstedt is the 3rd book of the Anders Knutas police procedural mystery series set on contemporary Gotland, Sweden. Summer on Gotland is a delightful paradise for residents and tourists alike, who enjoy plenty of outdoor sports and leisure activities during the long daylight hours. But this summer, Inspector Anders Knutas is going to miss vacation with his family, due to a long-running murder investigation. It starts with a strange incident: young girls discover their favorite pony murdered. Horse death is not normally a police matter, but the macabre nature of the crime calls for police investigation. Next, an archaeology student disappears from a university dig of Viking relics. When her body is discovered, the ritualistic nature of her murder puts the police on alert, calling in national crime specialists from Stockholm.

Occasional chapters from the killer's point of view don't reveal identity, just peculiar mental state and methodical preparation for the next crime.

Journalist Johan and his ladylove Emma eagerly await parenthood. Johan longs for more commitment from Emma, who is still tormented by the transition from her previous marriage.

Thefts of antiquities from Gotland are usually 'under the radar' of police investigation, but both Anders and Johan independently see a possible connection to the ritualistic threats and serial killings. A deadly confrontation on a nearly deserted, barren part of the island ties all the subplots together. Will they all survive it?

Read this series in order to understand the relationships, especially Johan's and Emma's history, and Anders' selfless dedication. Without reading the earlier books, Anders may seem a bit petulant at the loss of vacation; a fuller understanding of how he has put his job first many times over his personal life provides context. The book ends with a cliffhanger: a major character's fate unknown.

Le habían cortado el cuello. Todo lo que ellas vieron fue un enorme agujero ensangrentado y una nube de moscas que zumbaban alrededor de la abertura carnosa.” ~ Nadie lo conoce de Marie Jungstedt.

Nueva entrega del detective Knutas en la isla de Gotland. En esta ocasión aparece el cuerpo de un caballo decapitado pero no aparece la cabeza. Knutas comienza la investigación que se complica cuando en vez de un animal, el cadáver es el de una joven estudiante que trabaja en un yacimiento arqueológico. Posteriormente, un político encuentra una cabeza de caballo en su granja pero no corresponde al caballo hallado muerto sino que haya otro cuerpo por ahí decapitado.

El caso se va complicando mientras Knutas afronta una especie de depresión y el periodista Johan investiga al tiempo que intenta disfrutar de su hija recién nacida.

Sigo con la saga de Knutas. Me parece bastante entretenida. Son libros que se leen fácilmente y ligeros, ideales para compaginar con lecturas más densas pero sin muchas más pretensiones. Me gusta el personaje principal y las tramas paralelas que van transcurriendo. De hecho ya tengo la siguiente entrega en la mesilla.

El caso me ha parecido bastante entretenido si bien es cierto que es fácil intuir quien es el culpable. Lo que sí he echado de menos en esta entrega es un mayor papel del periodista como investigador y también de Knutas.
