Secrets I Keep

Rate this book
What happens when secrets aren’t enough to protect you?

I moved to Texas for a fresh start, at least that’s what I tell people. No one gets the whole truth. Hell, I haven’t let anyone close enough to even ask.

Until him.

Jax is a born heart-breaker with a killer smile. When I get injured, I try to keep him at crutch’s length, but he’s always there. He helps me with my little sister Sophie as he sweeps me off my feet, even though I do my best to resist his charm. But he can’t fool me. No one does anything without expecting something in return. And I don’t want to owe anyone, especially Jax.

Besides, I’m not the only one hiding something from my past. If Jax isn’t who he says he is, it’ll endanger more than my heart. I learned long ago not to trust anyone, and he’s no exception. Not that it matters…Jax would never understand the SECRETS I KEEP.

Secrets I Keep is another Kindle Unlimited gem, it was nothing like I was expecting – but in a good way. Lily’s story about broke my heart, what that girl endured at the hands of her father no child should ever have to go through.

The twists and turns kept my interest, as did Jax. He was so, so perfect for Lily – strong, protective, patient, caring – yep just what I want to see in a hero. There was a fair bit of pushing on Lily’s part but given what she had endured I totally got why she was so terrified to let anyone in.

A great little read all tied up with a sweet epilogue.

5 PLUS Stars.... This book was GREAT:) Spoilers Ahead

Wow, I am emotionally drained after that beautiful yet heartbreaking gem of a story.
Jax, Lily, and Sophie, oh my, these characters were just...... magnificent, beautiful, tortured, scarred....full of so much love and caring and oh yeah.....PERFECTLY imperfect.

I don't want to give any details of the story as I feel it's best to "experience" their journey but I will give this particular spoiler as it may be a hard limit and a trigger for some that may not be comfortable to read about the subject matter:

OK, now Jax....OMFG, yep had to add the F for emphasis on this beautiful, caring, kind, compassionate, sexy as hell man. OH hell would I LOVE me a Jax:) Lily and Sophie were incredible girls.. I loved them just as hard as Jax!!!!!

I didn't realize that this book ended fairly quickly and that there are 4 more of her books right after this ends and you know what, I am fine with that! I didn't realize this as I was reading and kept thinking ok, if ALL of this is happening NOW then what will happen with about 3/4 more of this story to go, lolololol, (don't remember exact % that it stopped at) but then there are details at the end of the Epilogue explaining apt the next 4 books following. NOW with that being said, I am usually not a fan of that format or rather that short of a book considering I thought it was a "full length" novel BUT you know what, I loved it so much I didn't care one bit:) I am planning to continue on and read the rest of the stories remaining:)

Author Kelley Harvey this story was amazing, it was heartbreaking and beautiful at the same time, it was GREAT! The writing was superb, I was literally on the edge of my seat, holding my breath throughout...I kid you not, my heart was beating a mile a minute when it wasn't in my throat and yet I LOVED every single second of it and would go through it again in a NY minute, lol. The storyline flowed seamlessly, it was dark and disturbing because of my above spoiler warning but yet it was written with such compassion and class and I loved the underlying storyline of hope and second chances at living and I mean truly living life. If anyone deserved the beautiful life ahead of them, it WAS Jax, Lily and Sophie, too:) This was a fast paced read because once I started I NEVER put it down!!!!!!! Kept me glued from start until the very last word was written!

Author Kelley Harvey, I am officially a fan of yours now and in the future:) Spectacular job!!!!!!

I don't know how or why I ordered this book, but I have to say it was very well written and the strength and courage that the heroine showed through out the story was amazing. Lily is the victim of a father who was not only physically abusive, but mentally abusive. He hurt her, broke her and raped her. Awful. Heart-wrenching. Disgusting. But it happens. I enjoyed the character Jax, he was what Lily needed and deserved so bad. I also enjoyed the writing and will be looking out for this author's future books.

“SECRETS I KEEP” was my first book by Kelley Harvey and I think it will not be my last. Intrigued by the Blurb – but not really knowing what to expect as the indications were vague at best – I started reading it yesterday and finished it within 24 hours.

Yes it was really a fast read because I actually also felt that the story paced that fast. What seemed vague from judging the blurb was cleared up very shortly after beginning to read. The reader was never facing any doubts about what was going on. And I must admit the one twist that reveals itself in due course was not really a secret to me as I guessed it pretty early in the story.

But still that actually does not matter so much. The characters are developed fully and deeply. The writing in so solid and contains enough suspense to keep the readers attention from beginning to end. If you want to pick apart the story you will find stuff that could have and would have been handled differently if this had been the reality and not a fictional story but if you are willing to overlook smaller issues this is really a great story that I can highly recommend.

Siblings Lily and Sophie run away to live with their aunt in an effort to stay away from their abusive father. We learn that said father has hired a number of PIs to search for them because he's a sadistic bastard. Their mother is useless as she is depressed after the death of their sibling (although I now wonder if it was really Lily's child too). Jax is one of the PIs hired but he realizes right away that whatever the father has told him isn't quite right. His goal is to get Lily to open up to him before he reports back in with his whereabouts. He eventually falls in love with her and gets the truth out of her but it's almost too late.

The worst part of this is that we learn that Sophie is really Lily's child. Given that L is only 20 or 21, this means she had the child at a very young age. Horrific. I don't know what I thought when I picked up this book. I really hate this subgenre of abuse stories that turn into romances. It feels like exploitation. The good news about this is that we see Lily getting therapy (yay) and there's an HEA.

Ugh. Gross. Ew.

Not one warning. Not one! Not in the blurb. Not in the reviews I read. Nothing.

So here's mine without hiding the spoiler. You need the warning. THIS BOOK DEALS WITH INCEST! Not just a father raping his daughter, but worse details come to light. I knew the rape was going to be mentioned because I felt it coming, and I read on. That's on me, but I was blindsided by the other detail. Trust me... it's horrific.

I am not naive. I know incestuous relationships exist and are devastating. I don't want to knowingly read books about them. But that's just it. I WASN'T WARNED! Had I been, I would have gladly ignored the numerous five-star reviews and been on my happy way reading the other books I have in queue.

Seriously, I don't get the numerous five-star ratings. The good parts of the book are totally ruined. (shudder)

Wow, just wow. Such a powerful gamut of emotions this book brought out in me. I must say I did not see that coming.
What a horrid life Lily has lived, her father is an extremely cruel man. She and young Sophie flee from their father escaping this brutality. Jax is a P.I. who is looking for them as their father is paying for Jax to bring little Sophie home. He moves in to a home close by to keep an eye on them and to make sure he has the right girls. Due to an injury to Lily, Jax ends up looking after the girls for a while and falls for Lily.
A series of events have Jax and Lily racing home to save Sophie who has been snatched and such secrets come out. The final chapter of the book is emotionally exhausting...no spoilers, but you're going to want to read this amazing story.

SECRETS I KEEP is a standalone novel with a great final and no cheating. What happens when secrets aren’t enough to protect you? I was given this book in exchange for an honest and unbiased review and I have to say that Kelley Harvey doesn't disappoint. This's the story of Jax and Lily. The plot is full of heartbreak, family drama, secrets, abuse, great characters and sweet romance. Jax works for P-Eye Corp and his first job is finding Lily, her sister Sophie and take them to their father, Ethan Blanco. I hated that guy, sorry my opinion only. Well NO Spoilers here, go buy the book, it's an emotional sweet story and it's worth it!! Good Job Kelley!!!

This book is heavy, in a good way. I read a snippet of this story a while back when Kelley was still writing it. I couldn't wait to read this. I was not disappointed.
Kelley Harvey is a fantastic writer. I haven't read a book by her that I didn't love. I know this story is close to Kelley's heart and after reading, it's now close to mine. I don't want to give any of the story away, but be warned, you will need tissues. This is most definitely a book hangover book. This standalone is told in both Jax and Lily's POV.

I almost don't know how to put into words what I want to write for this review. This book is so emotional, so full of honest to goodness sadness and hope. I can be ugly crying one minute and just when I think I might be done the emotions start again. Such a hard and tricky subject to write about but this author does it perfectly. For fans of this author, while it might not have the hot and sexy steak you are used to, her writing style is still there. You definitely need to read this book and then share it with all your friends!!

This was a very emotionally charged heartgripping read. Kelley Harvey masters a book.that is unlike anything she has ever written. Not everyone can accomplish what she has. I have read all of her previous books, and though this is much different, it will grab your heart and have you holding on tight for the ride. You will NEVER see the twist coming. I won't go beyond telling you that this book is beyond your usual read. If you are looking for a read that is full of meaning and emotion, look no further. This was a refreshingly different novel. Way to go Kelley!!!

This is the first book I have read by this author, and I enjoyed it very much.

Lily and Sophie leave their home to go live with their aunt to escape their abusive father. Their mother suffers from severe depression and is often so out of it, she is not much help. The aunt isn't much better, she is irresponsible and sometimes disappears for days at a time.

Lily is trying to find a job to support Sophie (7 years old), but she isn't having much luck. Jax moves in next door and is very interested in the two girls. Sophie instantly likes him, but Lily is standoffish because she knows she can't trust anyone. Her father's reach is pretty far.

After Lily is forced to stay with Jax when she breaks her foot, they become close. But is Jax who he says he is? Read and find out.

This is the second book which I have read from this author, and she is now firmly placed on my favourites list. Wow, this book blew me away! It is an emotional read, be warned to have the tissues handy. This is a fast paced story, which is action packed, has secrets, abuse, heartache, suspense, and surprise twists. I was hooked and on tenterhooks from the very beginning.
What more can I say? I absolutely loved this book, and in my opinion is worth so much more than the 5 star rating. I recommend to all readers who love going on a rollercoaster of a journey.

First let me say, if you have severe emotional triggers from childhood this book might not be for you. That being said, the stark emotional drama that plays out on the pages will make you FEEL ! It maybe hate, love, anger, fury or compassion, but you will feel and you will cry. Kelley Harvey has taken a subject matter that is usually whispered about in dark family rooms, or splashed sensationally across newspaper headlines and given it a voice, a face if you will. Someone you want to beat the demons of their past. And on the opposite side, someone to despise, to hate to see in jail or better yet, under the ....jail. This is not Kelley Harvey's hot, sexy read, this is an emotional Rollercoaster that takes you along for a ride, one I promise if you take, you will have a new respect for the Author and for survivors. 5☆'s

This review is going to be all over the place, so I am apologizing in advance.
Way more than 5 stars!
When I started reading this book, I was like I don’t know if I am going to like it. I honestly I thought there was too much detail in the first few chapters. HOWEVER, when I dug in and really started reading, I could not STOP. I need that detail like my next breath. I finished this book in 1 day. I read while at the gym, I read the book at work, I read the book in the bathroom, I read the book in the bath, I read the book when I should have been sleeping, I started and couldn’t put it down.
This book is about so much more than a story for me. I have carried a secret with me for 22 years. 22 long years, not one day goes by that I don’t remember why I have that secret or the scars it has bared to me.
When I was at about 22% in the book, the author sent an email and asked for everyone to give their honest opinions about the book and I quote, “potential readers really want to know whether or not the book is worth their money and their time”. Last night as I was reading this the book and all I could think about was my secret and how it shaped my life, how life shaped Lily’s life. So if you are reading the review and you want to know if it is worth it….. Ask yourself, do you have a secret and how has it affected you? Ask yourself if this book will help you with your secret? Will knowing someone else can survive and become a better person from a secret? This is your book, hands down.
Lily is strong and so weak at the same time. She is hurt, damaged and scared to death.
Jax is strong and so weak at the same time. He is damaged, brave, and confused. (Notice the pattern)
The book is like John Grisham and Nicholas Sparks having a baby together. It is a scary roller coaster with beautiful love and heart crunching news. I couldn’t decide if I needed my detective skills or my ugly cry Kleenex.
I challenge each of you to read this book. I challenge you to be open minded and believe in new beginnings! This book may be fiction but it is my truth just different secrets!

Before I start my review, I will say that before you read this book, and you definitely should, be prepared because this book is heartbreaking. At least for me it was!
We meet Lily in the first chapter and get a sense of where this book is heading and from that first chapter your hooked! The next chapter is 13 months later and Lily has left home with Sophie! She has moved a lot just to escape from him! She ends up in Texas with her lousy excuse for an aunt but that all she has right now, until the handsome guy moves in next door!
Jax, is ex-military and now's he's on his first assignment as a PI! He's been told to find both Lily and Sophie and bring them home. He's not given all the information and he slowly starts to befriend Lily but she doesn't trust anyone, especially men!
He is persistent in trying to get to Lily but she can't let him or anyone else close. We get little a glimpse of her previous life before Texas and it is not a happy one.
I won't reveal anything that will ruin your read if this book but I will recommend it all the way!
This book left me feeling sad, angry, teary, and also there was hope, love and admiration for how strong Lily actually is! How she fiercely protected Sophie! Jax, was also really loveable even though he was there to take them home, he knew something wasn't adding up! He was really sweet with Sophie and also very calm with Lily.
It broke my heart when she finally revealed her secrets to Jax, except one, and how he handled it all. He truly has an amazing heart. Also they both share a certain pain of losing a loved one.
I just really can't praise this book enough! It has to be my favourite book of Kelley's and I think it will stay that way even when she has future book releases. This was a difficult book to read, only because of the contents but I have to salute every single "Lily" out there! If you read this book I hope it helps and shows that you are strong, deserving, and most importantly, you will be loved by the right people!! Be Strong!

Jax Alexander is a private investigator and his first job is to locate his client's daughters. All he was provided with was their age and description of what they look like. No pictures were provided. He was also told that the older daughter, who kidnapped her sister when she ran away from home is off and that is why the client doesn't want the police involved. Jax is the fourth PI to be hired to find the two girls. Jax is determined to find the girls but when he does, he finds a whole lot more.

Lily and Sophie White left home with their mother's help. they have been on the run for a while now. When Lily hit a wall she breaks and calls her mom for help. She sends them to stay with her sister, their aunt, until they can figure something else out. While staying with her Aunt Cynthia, Lily meets Jax. She doesn't know him and doesn't trust him either. He does all he can to weasel himself in to get to know her and figure out if they are truly his client's missing daughters. After a roof accident Lily is at the mercy of needing Jax to care for her. Little by little Lily starts to open up and let Jax know things about why she's not with her parents.

Jax is unaware that someone else is looking for the girls so when he confronts a guy in front of Lily's house and says her name he doesn't know that he just gave up her whereabouts and something bad is about to happen.

This book will have you on edge from the first paragraph to the end. A worthy read. I received a free advance reader copy of this book in exchange for an honest & unbiased review.

It's no secret....this book is filled with angst! I was hooked from page one and my heart stopped a few times. Lily is a scarred and broken young woman - victim of an abusive father and a mother who uses prescription drugs as a band aid to hide the dysfunction and her own grief over losing a child. Lily escapes with her younger sister and they go to live with her aunt, who isn't much of a role model and has her own issues. Enter Jax Alexander, the private detective who has been hired by Lily's pathetic excuse of a father to find them. Jax has his own suspicions about why Lily and Sophie are living in hiding but just needs Lily to come clean and give him more details. He manages to evade the questions from his corporate office, feigning excuse after excuse as to why he hasn't 'found' Lily. I'm not giving spoilers, but I will tell you that Jax is a stand up guy, who has a bit of baggage himself. He falls for Lily, but can she let go of her demons to let someone love her? Just when you think things can't get any worse, a dark secret surfaces. Be prepared for the shock of a lifetime. This book was beautifully written and I even think it could serve as a source of inspiration for victims of abuse who need a ray of hope and a gentle nudge to get out and make things better through the pages of a fictional romance story.

This was a really sweet read. Lilianna Blanco ran away from home with her little sister Sophie to get away from her father. He's an abusive and sick man. They've been running and moving as much as possible. They end up in Texas. That's where Jax Alexander catches up to them. He just got out of the military and now he's working for a private investigative company.

Lily is 21 years old and she's had a pretty tragic life. Her father is a horribly abusive man. Her little sister Lola died when she was just a baby. Her mother hasn't been right ever since. She's been horribly depressed and she sleeps most of the time. She's taken care of her little sister Sophie and she's done everything she can to protect her. Jax ends up renting the house next to Lily to try to make sure that they are who he is looking for.

Jax hasn't had that great of a life either. His twin brother Jimmy died from a horrible accident. His mother left him and his father soon after the death. He's felt immense guilt since then. He joined the Air Force and has been wanting to go to Medical School. His very first assignment was to find Lily and Sophie. He's trying to make sure they are who he is looking for but he also wants to know what Lily seems to be hiding. He ends up caring about them and keeps putting off that he found them to his employer.

Definitely worth reading.

After reading this book, my emotions where all over the place, and I had to sit back awhile, before I could write this review.having said that I still can't think of the words to give this book the review it so rightly deserves.
Jax is ex military, now a private investigator, sent on his first case, to find 2 missing girls, Lily and Sophie.
When he meets them,he hides what he does for a living, keeping it a secret, so that they don't run again, getting to know about the girls more, he knows something isn't right about Lily and the case, and ends up falling for her.
Lily has secrets of her own, of which she has never told anyone about them, which is why she is running scared all the time. But gradually getting to know Jax, she realises that she is falling for him also. But the trauma and emotions of her secrets, makes her keep her guard up,along with the brick wall around her heart.
This book is a rollercoaster of all rides, well written and with the subject matter of physical abuse, is also emotional. But a fantastic read, with a HEA.
I have read all the books by this author and its not as steamy as her usual reads, but it has the anticipation and build up to keep you turning the pages.
Well done on another fantastic book

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. This is the second book I have read of Ms Harveys So Long being the first. I really enjoyed this story. It had so much depth to it. Very emotional. You find yourself drawn in by everything that Lily has gone through in her young life. Jax is a man who wants to do the right thing. He is given the job of locating Lily and Sophie and he wants to make sure he is doing the right thing. Some things just don't add up for him. He is falling for Lily and has a feeling what he has been told about her is not the truth. It's much worse than he ever could imagine. Through a series of events he finally find out the truth and he tells Lily what she has gone through does not change his feels for her. He is in love with her and says what she has gone through only makes him love her more because it made her strong, brave and the woman she has come to be. I absolutely loved this story and can not it to read more of Ms Harveys books. Hoorah for HEA endings.!

The second I received this book I dived right into it. this story will grab at your heartstrings. After I finished this book I was gutted...It took me a few days to gather my thoughts and give Kelley a fair review. If I could give her more than 5 stars i most certainly would.
This is not the first book I've read by this Author and after Secrets I keep, it will not be the last. This book gutted me from the beginning to end. At first the beginning for me a little to hard to follow, but as all the pieces quickly fell into place, I couldn't put it down. she touches on a subject that doesn't get told very enough. Incest is not something that anyone wants talk about but she very smartly pulls the reader through her story and leaves you guessing until the very end. This story does have a happy ending and I can't wait to see what she writes next!
