Rylee Adamson #7

Veiled Threat

Rate this book
"My name is Rylee, and I am a Tracker."

When children go missing, and the Humans have no leads, I'm the one they call. I am their last hope in bringing home the lost ones. I salvage what they cannot.

Demons are putting rips in the veil in order to cross over and steal my friends and allies away.

But, going after them isn't even close to simple. The deepest level of the veil is not a place you can just open a doorway too, after all, and of course, that's where they've been taken.

As fate would have it, it looks like I might get some help from a trained demon slayer and his fire breathing ride.

The only problem? Said demon slayer claims to have family ties to me. And I've never trusted my family.

Nor I'm not about to start now.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far away, I was born into a family of Star Wars nuts. I have a lot of siblings (somewhere I lost count but I think there was more than could be numbered on one hand) and being one of the young padawans I was subjected to Star Wars marathons, on a regular basis. If you've read any of my books you'll see there is often a reference to said movies as a small homage to my upbringing. May the force be with you and all that jazz.

I started writing when I realized I didn't want to grow up not believing in magic, or not believing in creatures everyone else said didn't exist. That being said, I have never seen a fairy, unicorn or dragon. I had a neighbour who swore they fed the leprechauns in their garden, but I never caught the little buggers no matter how long I lay in wait. (And consequently had to help the neighbours plant new flowers to replace those I killed waiting for the leprechauns to show their faces.)

Along the way, I found my husband who is the rock that keeps me from floating away into my dreams, and we have a little boy who is the centre of our world. Living on a farm keeps us busy (as if the writing wasn't enough) and I have more than my share of stories about wrestling with cows, helping birth calves and ending up in the creek during the process, falling in the mud (we'll call it mud but we all know that on a farm, mud is rarely mud) and chasing escaped livestock in the hopes the four legged convicts don't make it to the highway.

I've taken up archery, and the goal is to move into horseback archery in time (you know, when I can hit the target on a consistent basis) and when no one is looking, I love to bake (this doesn't happen often as it's hard to keep the sweet treats in stock with two boys in the house.)

As to what's coming next for me? More stories (since those never stop inside my head, I might as well share them with all of you!) and more adventures. Pretty much, when the fancy strikes, I'll jump on it. Leap before you look I'm sure that motto was created for me.

Or was that . . . think big and dream bigger, ready, set, pull the trigger . . . yeah. That one is a good one too. But only if you have a gun. And are hunting elephants. Which is not cool because of so many reasons. Let's stick with the first one with an addendum.

Leap before you look and let your dreams carry you on their wings. And that, my friends, is me in a nutshell.

I’m a huge fan of this series so there is no doubt that I would love Veiled Threat.

For a while now we’ve been given hints about Rylee and why she is such a pivotal role in this series, named after her of course. But in Veiled Threat a lot of hints are unveiled and it makes for some really amazing reading.

Great character development, amazing world building and a fabulous addition to the RYLEE ADAMSON series, Veiled Threat is a perfect example of what makes me an Urban Fantasy fanatic. Best part, I know it only gets even better from here.

I received this copy of Veiled Threat from Talos. This is my honest and voluntary review. This book is set for republication June 20, 2017.

My thoughts on this series were originally all over the map, but after two strong back-to-back installments I’m no longer waffling. There were some parts of VEILED THREAT that chafed, namely Erik & Ophelia, not the characters themselves just their acquisition and I know that I’m beginning to sound like a broken record because Shannon Mayer increases the RYLEE ADAMSON secondary count by at least one per book however it still irritates me. Anyway, the answers and groundwork that this novel brought far exceeded my personal annoyances, so it’s all good.

Crumbs about the Blood of the Lost have been dropped throughout the world-building; however this volume ripped that particular riddle wide open, and caused all that came before it to make a whole lot more sense. Erik & Ophelia played a huge role in that, so their presence was justified even though their ties to Rylee should have in all likelihood been broached in previous installments. I also had a knee-jerk reaction to the “figure eight” scene thinking it was too opportune, but I bit my tongue, and the author went in a different direction with it which worked out.

The plot development with regards to Milly wasn’t much of a bombshell, although Mayer did link it to the protagonist as well in a roundabout way, thus in spite of the transparent bits, there were a few surprises. And, this novel’s story was in some ways a bid to buy time to prep for the closing hurrah; however there was still plenty of action, and a couple of very important pieces fell into place, so albeit that it wasn’t my favourite out of seven, it brought something to the RYLEE ADAMSON table, and at the end of the day that’s all that a reader can ask for.

I found that I lost sight of the heroine somewhat; she did exactly what she needed to do. Period. She allowed herself one tear for a fallen comrade, and a moment vis-a-vis the witches’ predicament, but for the most part she was all business. I’m concerned that the author is going to skirt most of the emotional stuff for the duration. As much as I love that Rylee never takes a day off, I can’t help except feel like I’m missing out on that side of her personality. Liam sat on the bench a lot too. The only character that was his usual delightful self was Alex. I ♥ that werewolf!

The payoff starts in VEILED THREAT—the next three books are going to be all-consuming. BRING IT!

What happened to Rylee? She went from a strong but caring fighter in the first books of this series to a nasty, abrasive Beeyotch with little more than a constant barrage of cursing and put-downs. Seriously folks, can we not come up with at least a few words other than the F-bomb every. single. time she opens her mouth? It’s called creative writing for a reason! Even the most mundane words become screech-worthy annoying if used in every sentence - let alone words that make us stop and take notice in the first place. And yes, we know the weight of the world is on her shoulders but can there not be at least a little smidgeon of decency in the way she deals with people? Especially those she loves.. She is just as short and rude to them as with everyone else.

That plus the lack of any character development whatsoever in this story left me really disappointed. The non-stop action is just as good as in previous installments, the creative world-building is still there. It just lacks the heart that I so loved.

Crumbs about the Blood of the Lost have been dropped throughout the world-building; however this volume ripped that particular riddle wide open. Side characters continue to be developed. It's action-packed as always and continues to build up the finally installment.

Yup, Mayer didn't disappoint!

This really is one of the best series I've ever read!
I love everything about it but most of all I'm (continuing to be) shocked by the fact that it still surprises me and it doesn't bore me, not even a little bit, despite the fact that this was the 7th book already.
Yup, I'm off to the next one!

Another strong read from Mayer. This one was nonstop action and the foreboding in this book had me biting my nails. We move ever closer to the final fight and Liam’s fate seems surer than ever. A must read for fans of this series.

Not as interesting

I fought with paying attention, it's like the series is losing it's direction. I found parts boring. Even Rylee wasn't really her kick a$$ self. Liam is pulling away Molly is recaptured and controlled again. Yes we had deception but that's about it.

There is a Graphic Audio production of the whole Rylee Adamson Series, which includes 10 books of the series and five short stories. All this was included in my audible subscription. That's how I decided to listen to all the books and short stories. Otherwise it would have been pretty costly to listen to this production.

The first two short stories and book 1 and two were 3.5 and 4 stars. The rest of the series was a solid three stars rating.

At some point the story felt to drawn out but since I had passed the point of no return, where I just wanted to know who the stories ends I finished 15 Graphicaudio books. I think the story could have been shortened without loosing anything. From the beginning two things were predictable: One (and even more) person was Demon possessed and this person will die. And also there will be an Elemental involved, whom we meet again in book 9.

I liked Rylee and Mayer killed off some of the good guys. Two deaths were not really necessary and didn't feel right.

I would say this is a drawn out series, but okay, to listen for free in the graphic audio version. Stay away from the series if you tend to dnf series and hate it if the author kills beloved important side charcters.

*Thoughts*

Shannon Mayer's Veiled Threat is the Seventh installment in the authors Rylee Adamson series. For Rylee, and her allies (Liam, Milly, Alex, Eve, Blaz and Pamela), it has been a month of relative piece and calm. In fact, Rylee and Liam have just returned from a European vacation which made their bond even stronger. But that quickly changes when Rylee discovers that doorways have been destroyed, Red Caps are being slaughtered by demons, ogres are now enemies, Orion manages to kidnap both Milly and Pamela, and a man who claims that he is Rylee's uncle appears out of nowhere along with a dragon (Ophelia) that allegedly belonged to her father.

If it was possible to hold your breath while reading this whole book, I think I might have done it. Action packed adventure as always and chaos that always seems to follow Rylee where ever she went. I get so sucked in I was on edge the entire moment I started reading the book. Starting out where the last book ended, the action just keeps going. It’s as if I was part of the pack and don’t know who to trust any more except the main characters (Rylee, Liam, Alex, Pam, Eve, Blaz, and Doran). I’m not even sure of the other characters any more. Rylee’s been betrayed left right and center and she’s still going strong. Love is definitely the greatest tool to be had when it comes to a huge battle that could wipe out everyone you love and care about.

SPOILER ALERT!!!
Tear jerker moment when Milly had to stay behind because Orion had bound her to him again. I’m with Rylee on this one…”I almost wished she hadn’t redeemed herself, wished she hadn’t come back into my life. It was easier to hate, far easier to hate than let someone go who you loved so dearly.” Tears streaming down by this point, then Faris showing up the way he did in the middle of the council meeting…ugh.

Hold your breaths and brace your hearts. This book will take you to its ups and downs and its roller coaster of emotions that you’ll need to hang on to your seat to stay seated. Now we wait till August 2014 for the finale. I want to know what happens, but I’m also sad to know it’s going to be the last book.

What a rollercoaster!! This series just amazes me. I was unable to put this book down while I listened intently to Lauren Fortgang. The narrator is just amazing and I love the tones and inflections she uses for Rylee, Liam, Alex, and the rest of the gang. Oh, I also love how she also portrays Pamela. The accent used is spot on.
Trouble always seem to follow Rylee. Nothing is never easy for Rylee and her team. I loved the addition of a necromancer in this one, and I hope to discover more about the vampires and necromancers too. There's a story there. This one is an addictive listen. The dark side is preparing for war. Who will survive?

A very special thanks to the author for the gifted audiobook.

I knew from the first page I was going to love this series and it has become one of my favourites. I read it years ago and now I am leaving a review.
Rylee has the best and the worst job, to find those who are lost, the ones no one can find but it is not all sunshine and roses. Sometimes it will break your heart.
It is an intriguing, suspenseful, and mysterious thriller filled with tension. The story includes alliances, threats, betrayal, riddles, and plots, all infused with a touch of humour to keep the pages turning.

I've reached the point with this series that I'm only reading because I want to know how it ends. I don't even really like the character any longer. Its dragged on too long and they're all annoying me in one way or another. I can't even be bothered with a full review. Just finish the series already please!

I think it had a lot more action, and things between and for the characters are happening quickly. But we've gotten far enough along in the long arc now that the endings are just next-book set ups and I'm already sick of the big bad looming trope.

Can't say that I'm a fan of all the stuff that isn't being said but is being alluded to, either.

3.5

Feb 13th and I'm finally finished my first book of the month 🙈 Took me wayyy too long to read this (life, etc) but it was a great installment to the series!

Rylee was kickass as usual, and I love all the new characters being introduced. I missed Pamela in this installment - but we got great development from other characters. Alex forever has my heart, and as always it was great to see Dorian.

This is book 7/10 of the series, and it is deffs setting up the final three books to be hella action packed. It seems like the "final battle" is getting hella close, so I am intrigued as to what the last three books will entail!

I've said it before (and i'll say it again), this is such an underrated series. It's fun and fast paced, and a great book hangover remedy. Excited for the next installment!

I am definitely enjoying this series! I think the fact that I am listening to it through the graphic audio version is bringing the series alive for me. The narrators are fantastic, the characters are just amazing, and the storyline keeps getting better and better with each book! I'm ready to start the next one!

Heaps of action in this one.
In the Rylee series as like the nix series romance is definitely a secondary aspect.

I like Alex
I like Rylee
And most of the other secondary characters. Rylee is a collector of misfits.

4 star listen
This was fantastic
Bring on the next.

The Rylee Adamson series has quickly grown into one of my favorites. As the tensions build towards the inevitable battle between Rylee and Orion the fate of mankind is at stake. No where does the reader feel it more than in the seventh book, "Veiled Threat."

This time, Rylee and the gang work furiously to try to close the gates leading to the demon world. They must fight ever demonic creature imaginable including Recaps and ogres. Rylee attempts to get the ogres to side with her but their new leaders grief blinds her to the truth.

Along the way Rylee encounters someone she never thought she would me. No. I will not tell you who! Can she trust this person or are they just a ploy? Meanwhile, Will continues to express his love for Rylee. Although she makes it clear he does not have a chance because of her love for Liam she is confused by Liam's lack of anger. She realizes something is up with him but he refuses to tell her what it is.

We finally learn Orion's ultimate plan when he kidnaps Pamela and Milly. He is planning to use Milly's unborn child as his vessel into our world. Rylee will stop at nothing to rescue her friends and protect the child. There is plenty of action, intrigue, betrayals, and humor in this seventh book. Additionally Ms. Mayer leaves us with one hell of a cliffhanger.

Do yourself a favor, if you haven't picked up this series stop what you are doing and go order all the books starting with book one. You won't regret it.

Definitely the darkest so far and that's saying something, but major things happened in this book and the character development is rather wonderful. Rylee is growing and learning and so are her team. We are nearing the end of the series now and the big bad is in sight but he's more than Rylee has ever fought before I have to say I spent a lot of this book with my heart in my mouth. I had adrenaline running through me just reading! As ever though it's the relationships between the characters that act like a shining light in these books. Milly and Liam have a growing understanding which is beautiful to see and we get a new addition or 2 to the team. I have to say my gut was wrong and I guessed completely wrong as what was going to happen with them. Alex is losing his submissiveness and Faris, Doran and Berget are a very intriguing trio. This book answered a few things and gave me many more questions. Burning on the tip of my tongue was what is the demon living building in the veil? I really cannot wait for the next instalment and also look forward to the new series starting in this world. Bravo Ms Mayer this was a captivating and brilliant instalment.

Not my favorite of the series, but a good addition. While there was plenty of action, I did feel this book dragged in some places. It’s also getting to the point that I’m starting to struggle to remember all of the secondary characters’ names and faces, so I’m glad Shannon has the ebook linked to character descriptions. Liam sat on the bench for a lot of this book, so hoping the next book has more of him in with the action! Milly’s plot line in this book didn’t surprise me, but it’ll be interesting to see where that will go from here. Looking forward to the big battle that is nearing!

I harp on this in almost every book of the series, but I do have to say the editing of these books kills me. Every single one of them is poorly edited, but some are worse than others and this is one of the not-so-good ones. Every time we were in Liam’s POV, any mind conversations weren’t italicized, but they were in Rylee’s POV. It gets so confusing for no reason. There were also a ton of grammatical errors, including “could of” instead of “could have”. It just drives me nuts that these things aren’t caught since they’re such easy fixes and disrupt the story for me.

I enjoyed this series, especially seeing how it intertwined with the Elemental Series. However, I'm not so sure my teenagers would enjoy it. There is a fair amount of language and gore that even I skipped through. In addition to that there are some sex scenes to skip over, and a few crude/lewd moments that I could have done without. I understood the language was a way of distinction with the Trackers in that world, and if it hadn't been for how well done the story was I don't think I would have finished the series.
I did appreciate the moral to the series, that love for family and friends really can help us conquer the darkness in our lives. I also liked how the chain of events that was her life was realized at the end in a way that led her to where she was, and how necessary those events were to building who Riley was and developing why she was loved so much by her"family ".

Book 7 introduces a few interesting new characters, one of whom claims to be Rylee's uncle. But there's little opportunity for family reunions, and Rylee has little time to figure out whom to trust as demons are tearing holes in the veil and Orion snatches Milly and Pamela down to the deepest level of the veil. They are her family, and she will do whatever it takes to bring them home.
Another great action-packed read, though it lacked a little of the deep emotional impact the last few books had on me. Either way, looking forward to the next!

3.5 stars. This was definitely an exciting read, but Rylee got on my nerves in this one. She came across as very rude and impetuous. Yeah, she definitely has her reasons for whining and complaining, but I wanted her to be just a little nicer to others. The ending set up an exciting story for Wounded (Rylee Adamson #8) by Shannon Mayer though, and it looks like my complaints may be less of an issue in upcoming books.

Ok, so I do really enjoy this series - magic rules, characters, etc...it's definitely awesome and a worthwhile read, but I do have to say - I am sick to death of vampire/werewolf relationship drama. There are SO many other fascinating and powerful archetypes available that it feels a little like cheating to fall back on this one.

I love the characters, I think they are well-written, fully realized and a pleasure to read, but I still have this niggling little thing in the back of my head smacking itself and yelling "Oy vey".

Rylee Does it Again!

This addition to the series introduced us to a few new characters, one being a long list uncle. Rylee found herself in the deepest level of the veil to save two of her family members. She had to place trust in an old Necromancer. Alex continues to grow and come into his own. Though the storyline progressed, I felt like this one dragged a bit in places. I still enjoyed it and am ready for book 8!
