A lovely collection of extracts from Father Sophrony’s spiritual talks, with a great preface from Maxime Egger. Easy to dip into and pick up any time.

This book by Saint Sophrony the Athonite is one I know I will return to again and again. It is rich with quotations that speak to both the psychological and spiritual dimensions of the human person, offering depth without force or persuasion. This is not a book that argues, it listens, and invites the reader to do the same.

It feels like a companion rather than a text to be consumed all at once. I plan to keep it by my bedside, opening it from time to time to sit with a passage and let it work quietly within me. As Dorotheus of Gaza writes, “We have need of assistance; we need guidance in addition to God’s grace.” This book embodies that truth.

Here are the closing words of the preface:
Saint Sophrony does not try to convince or allure. His words either touch us or they do not. A seed can only take root in a soul prepared to receive it. Everything depends on our capacity to listen, our desire to be transformed, and our willingness to say yes.

A collection of quotes from St Sophrony from his talks to his monastic community in Essex. It offers a rich insight into the monk mindset and the book is beautifully printed, but the text contains a few typos.

The best parts were the sections on intellect does not save and explaining how Prayer>Theology.
I’m gonna start putting more effort in prayer than just learning strictly about theology from reading books. (Although the theology is based in prayer as well)

The amount of relatable wisdom that is shared from my personal experience was astounding. It’s only 60pages but it’s packed to the brim with knowledge definitely a
recommend. ☦️

This book was gifted to me after I was baptized from the woman who runs the bookstore. May God Bless her soul.
