Rate this book
Colin Cantwell, designer of the original Star Wars’ Death Star, X-Wing, TIE Fighter and other Starships, is now using his extraordinary imagination to draw you into the future and into another galaxy through his book CoreFires.

Deep in the CoreFires, space freighters thread their way through deadly plasma-walled tunnels ferrying supplies critical to the existence of Humankind. Along the passages, occasional Gapper villages act as way-stations to service the passing ships.

Of the cargo, the data Crystals are the most important. Necessary to life in space, they have to be protected at all costs.. Without them Humankind may not be able to survive.

Seeing an opportunity, the power hungry Major Apheron, affiliated himself with dark forces and planned how he could capture the Crystals and ransom them back to the villages that depended on them.

Within the CoreFires, unable to free himself, a terrified Captain Hollinger watched as hooded men loaded the Colonies’ life-giving Crystals onto the pirate ship and sent his space freighter towards the raging plasma… with him still onboard

On the other side of the CoreFires, Questor Joss of the ducked as fragments of a freighter came flying through the plasma walls. She sensed that something was terribly wrong. Is it possible this was the beginning of the ancient Owd’s attempt to conquer the worlds.

CoreFires is that rare piece of fiction that manages to blend disparate aesthetics into a coherent, unique, and extremely satisfying experience. The story tells the tale of a group of "Gappers", or people who live within the confines of the Corefires, a sea of plasma burning at the galactic core. There's a lot of world building thrown at you right away, but once you've got the basic layout, you begin to appreciate the original concepts developed by Cantwell. There's this seamless blend of old-world shipping and futuristic technology that has a great deal of charm to it.

All of the characters introduced are well-developed, and the world is convincing enough to get lost in, but the only issue arises in the fact that the story seems to lack a definitive climax. In that sense, the entire novel feels like the first step in a journey as opposed to the journey itself. In most cases, I'd take issue with that sort of structure, but in this context and in this particular case, it just seems to work. The cutoff is abrupt, but you can tell from a distance that this story is a foundational piece for something bigger.

Overall, I'd say it's easy to lose hours sailing through the Corefires. If you want to visit a visceral and breath-taking universe, then this is the novel for you.

I love this book. The main characters are well cheated in personality. Only issue I had was being able to picture what the characters/aliens/beings looked like. "Robot/Puppet master is my favorite book character right now! Can't wait for book 2. Please hurry Mr. Cantwell!
