Chomp!: Fierce facts about the BITE FORCE, CRUSHING JAWS, and MIGHTY TEETH of Earth's champion chewers

Rate this book
National Geographic Explorer and snake wrangler Dr. Brady Barr has been bitten by a lot of creatures over the years. So this book is born from first hand – er, tooth – experience of getting close to some of the biggest biters in the animal kingdom.

It turns out that there's a lot more to biting than meets the eye. Physical features and the how (and when and why) an animal bites reveals much about the animal itself. Chomp! highlights an array of awesome creatures with a diversity of chomp styles – from shredders and slicers to grippers and gulpers. Then it shows how tooth type, bite force, jaw shape, and food source all come to together to make each an incredible member of the animal bite force!

This is truly an amazing book that is packed with fascinating information that the author, Brady Barr, has gleaned from the four corners of the globe about a huge variety of animals, water life, birds, reptiles, and even insects. The focus is on the bite of each of the creatures and how it enables said creature to survive. How they eat. How they capture their prey.

The book will be quite appealing to young naturalists. I can just see kids sitting (or laying) around engrossed in the pages with these enthralling bits of information and pictures that show just how powerful these creatures' jaws are that CHOMP down on their food or their prey.

As the author describes the jaws and biting ability of these creatures, he educates the reader as to their bone structure and the type, location, and purpose of their teeth.

Some of the antics Dr. Barr got himself into were quite challenging and even sometimes funny as he tried to measure the Bite Strength of a variety of the creatures. The animals are large, fierce, and quite protective of their territory and don't like to be disturbed by a mere man.

National Geographic Kids has hit a homerun with this book and it should find a home in libraries and personal collections.

I am sure that you could read this over and over and over and learn something new. Here is a fun tidbit: This soft-bodied squid has an unreal 1,100-pound bite. Learn about this and so many more awesome and interesting facts in this book! It is jam packed with things that I find fun, intriguing and oh so fascinating! My kids are going to love this book so much too.

An animals bite force is the amount of pressure an animal applies when it bites down. Biting isn’t just for eating but is often used for defense, courtship, maintaining territory and for challenging rivals. In this guide readers will find who the Grippers, Slicers, Crushers and Gulpers are in the animal kingdom.

Lions are grippers and bite their struggling prey hard to bring them down. Tasmanian devils, the grey wolf and tiger sharks are also grippers, along with the spotted hyena. Slicers are animals that have teeth like knives. Snapping turtles, the great white shark, piranha, komodo dragons and even squid, who when they hunt their beak shreds fish and their rough tongues are covered in sharp teeth almost puree their prey. Crushers, like the grizzly bear, grind and pulverize their prey. The African elephant has upper incisors or tusks that are enormous teeth that grow at a rate of 7 inches per year. Reindeer, Gila monsters, humans and macaws fit into this category. Guplers are animals that suck in their food and swallow it whole. The American bull frog, nurse shark and the python fit into this category.

Author and Extreme Animal Explorer Brady Barr has coined his studies and adventures into animals with bite in this guide spot on. Barr shares his stories, adventures, fun facts and photos in this ultimate guide to animals with bite. Parents, teachers and kids will love the excitement of these stories and learning about the force of animals who hunt and protect themselves in their environment. Not only that, readers will understand how an animals body is built to chomp.

Barr, Brady. Chomp! Fierce Facts about the Bite Force, Crushing Jaws, and Mighty Teeth of Earth’s champion chewers. 95 pages. National Graphic Kids, 2017. $12.99. Content: G. NON FICTION.
Learn fascinating facts about some of the most powerful biters in the animal kingdom. Each two-page spread includes: information about the animal, what they eat, their bite force, and eye-catching, full-color photographs. Meet the Beast section includes more information on the animal; such as, size and color. What’s on the Menu section explains what the animals eat; such as, hippos eat grass—150 pounds of grass each night. The Bite Business section gives more fascinating facts about the animal; such as, how gray wolfs hunt in packs of 20-30 members. The Bite Force section explains the force of the animal’s bite in pounds; or in the case of a jaguar, a whopping one ton. The 123 By the Numbers sections explains how many teeth and their size; a Humbolt Squid has 40,000 small teeth. The Did You Know section is a short, interesting fact; such as elephants are right or left-tusked, just like humans are left or right-handed. All of the information is presented in a clear and interested way. Kids that are interested in animals will find this a fascinating book to bite into.

In, "Chomp!" learning about each animal takes less than 5 minutes and the given details are pretty captivating. For instance, did you know that African Wild Dogs often start eating their prey before the doomed animals are dead? Yeah, kinda gross, but also kinda cool to learn about.

This book is packed full of information. More than 30 animals are talked about and each has at least one glorious photo, their number of teeth, where they live, and what they like to eat listed. Interspersed throughout the book are also sections that talk about crazy experiences author Brady Barr has gone through during his 30 years of chasing animals around the world.

2017 EUREKA! Nonfiction Children's Book Award. Book talk this and it will be snatched up from your classroom library. Well written. Tightly focused. Coherent and cohesive. Super interesting facts that make the reader go WOW. Short narratives about his own adventures inserted along the way. This could be tied into science units of study on animal adaptations as well as physics (bite force is integral idea in the book) and simple machines even. The layout and design are sharp. Would make a great mentor for 3-8th grade writers of nonfiction.
