A headstrong young RCMP constable is left alone to police the quiet and peaceful island of Grand Manan, New Brunswick. However, his daily routine is disrupted when the body of a foreign national is found off a local wharf and he finds himself embroiled in a murder investigation that threatens the very fabric of the island community. Temporarily isolated from the mainland by a thick fog, he decides to pursue the case on his own in defiance of his orders. But with time running out, and his career at stake, he soon discovers there is more going on than he bargained for and the consequences could be deadly.
The Only Way out: A Grand Manan Murder Mystery was a phenomenal book and I was immediately captivated by the story within the first two pages. At the very beginning of the book, we instantly know we are dealing with a murder mystery as we read that someone has dumped a body off the dockside into the sea. We just don’t know who has been murdered and who is capable of murder.
Grand Manan is a small island where everybody knows everybody and everything. We are introduced to Constable Bill Garrett who patrols the island and he deals with mundane crimes as nothing too extreme ever happens on the island. He is called out to break-ins, DUI’s, pets eating neighbours gardens, and pets being shot at by provoked neighbours.
When Bill’s superior officer leaves the island to go to school in another province, Bill is left in charge to run the island and to make sure everything is in order. When a body is discovered floating under the dock, Bill is suddenly and unexpectedly swept into a murder mystery.
Constable Bill must now piece together all the missing puzzle pieces to learn who the deceased is, who murdered the deceased, and why the death occurred. Bill quickly learns that Grand Manan is not so quiet and there are some seedy, questionable events taking place behind closed doors.
He meets some pretty frightening people and must do some detective work with assistance from a friend to find out what is truly happening on the island while keeping everything quiet from the residents. Constable Bill is also working hard to give as less detail as possible to RCMP headquarters. He wants to solve this mystery on his own.
As I read along, I could not help but to laugh and smile along with the story. I found myself satisfied with the conclusion and the outcome of the events that transpired. It was a wonderful feeling to once again read a story that takes place in a part of the world that I can accurately envision in my head. Grand Manan is a beautiful island, and the author does an amazing job at capturing the beauty of the island. The Only Way Out: A Grand Manan Murder Mystery is a fun book and it is very well-written, and it keeps you guessing the entire time.
